The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of Lean engagement on relationship between lean practices and business excellence of Malaysian Electrical and Electronics (E&E) companies. The study will focus on deployment within lean operation and lean supply chain in the lean deployment. Based on the literature review, the author has established a linkage that effect of lean practices is likely to contribute positively to the business excellence of the company. Besides, the author would like to ascertain the potential of lean engagement whether it has full or partial mediating effects on the model. The theoretical framework is guided by innovation diffusion technology (IDT). The gap in the literature also warrants the need for a contextual study of the Malaysian E&E industry. The limitation suggests a gap for a future research by validating its effectiveness with others industry. Practical adoption of lean practices may improve infrastructural decision areas of manufacturing strategy such as benchmarking, best practices, quality practices and human resource policies. Therefore, it has implication on activities concerning lean engagement, lean effectiveness and business excellence.

Challenging and competitive business environment has prompted the automotive industry to restructure its manufacturing practices. Nowadays, Lean Manufacturing (LM) has been widely implemented in the automotive industry. LM supported the manufacturing companies, particularly automotive manufacturers in becoming world class manufacturers through various lean practices. However, lean implementation faced various obstacles such as the lack of management commitment and support, the absence of organizational communication, employees’ attitude and many more. It is also indicated that lean implementation success factors are not merely due to technical practices but also with the integration of non-technical aspects such as human-related practices. This paper aims to investigate the Soft Lean Practices that are necessary for the successful implementation of the Lean Production System (LPS) in the Malaysian Automotive SMEs. The result of this paper will provide a detailed review of Soft Lean ...
A conceptual framework for the lean research and development

Both lean R&D soft practices success factor and lean R&D tools and techniques are the improvement strategies to reduce cost, increase speed and deliver superior quality in R&D organization. In order to achieve higher performance, an R&D organization needs to adopt both lean R&D soft practices success factor, and lean R&D tools and techniques. Therefore, the main objective of this paper is to review the relationship among lean R&D soft practices success factor, lean R&D tools and techniques, and R&D based organization performance. After an extensive review of literature, a new lean R&D model in R&D based organization is developed with an objective of developing a theoretical knowledge for R&D based organization in order to understand more systematically the relationship among lean R&D soft practices success factor, lean R&D tools and techniques, and R&D based organization performance. The proposed model examines the impact of lean R&D tools and techniques as the mediating effect betw...

Although lean has gained many accomplishments, 90% of the manufacturers that implemented lean failed to sustain the implementation, and these results have led academics to consider lean culture as a soft lean approach for successful lean implementation. This research is aimed to investigate the role of lean culture for a successful lean implementation. This survey-based was a cross-sectional study with 151 final respondents from discrete manufacturers in Malaysia. The samples were selected using a cluster sampling procedure from medium and large manufacturing companies registered with the Federation of Manufacturers Malaysia (FMM). The data was analyzed using SmartPLS 4.0 software. The result showed evidence that lean manufacturing implementation is positively impacted by lean culture. This study contributes to the body of knowledge and widens the bounds of the current literature, and offers insight to the lean practitioners on lean implementation techniques to strategize the roadma...

Purpose: The study has aimed to identify the effect of lean practices on the operational performance of manufacturing firms in Pakistan. Design/Methodology: Using a positivistic deductive approach, the study has collected 211 responses from the supply chain professionals of manufacturing firms of Karachi, Pakistan using a purposive sampling technique. PLS-SEM has been employed for data analysis using SmartPLS version 3.2.8. Findings: The study has manifested that lean practices can enable manufacturing firms of Pakistan to improve their operational performance. Implications: Kanban is one of the most effective and tested methods to do this. Kanban is a mechanism that controls the flow of products within a supply chain by using visual signals (cards). There is a Kanban card attached to each object, container, crate, or pallet. The Kanban card details the products and amounts to purchase, so the factory floor may request the right parts. Workers take the card and give it to the depart...
Impact of lean strategy on operational performance: a study of Thai manufacturing companies
Purpose-The purpose of this paper is to examine the extent to which lean management practices are adopted by manufacturing organizations in Thailand and their impact on firms' operational performance. Design/methodology/approach-Using a survey questionnaire, data were collected against 13 lean practices from 187 middle and senior managers belonging to 187 Thai manufacturing firms. Using factor analysis these lean practices were then clustered into three higher level constructs namely just in time (JIT), waste minimization and flow management. The responding firms were categorized into small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and large enterprises (LEs) based on size and Thai-owned, foreign-owned and joint venture firms based on ownership. The multiple regression models were employed to investigate the effects of three lean constructs on operational performance in different categories of firms. The operational performance is measured by four parameters such as quick delivery compared to competitors, unit cost of products relative to competitors, overall productivity and customer satisfaction. Findings-The results indicate that all three lean constructs are significantly related to operational performance. JIT has a higher level of significance in LEs compared with SMEs, whereas for waste minimization there is a higher level of significance for SMEs compared with LEs. Flow management has a much lower level of significance for both SMEs and LEs. With respect to ownership, JIT is highly significant to operational performance for all three ownership groups (Thai, foreign and joint venture). Foreign-owned companies show a higher level of significance on operational performance for both waste management and flow management than Thai and joint venture companies. Originality/value-The paper provides insights into the adoption of lean practices in an Asian context and using survey data as opposed to case studies, and provides further evidence that lean practices are significant in enhancing operational performance.
The influence of lean manufacturing on firm performance through mediation of supply chain practices
South Asian Journal of Operations and Logistics
This research study aims to explore and confirm the impact of lean manufacturing practices on specifically the Supply Performance and generally the overall firm performance through the mediating role of supply chain practices among different partner entities associated with accomplishing a combined goal to generate profit, primarily focusing on minimizing wastes and reducing cost so that they can attain improved performance and competitive advantage. This study used a quantitative method to explore and confirm the developed and hypothesized model using a deductive approach. They were examined for the reliability, validity and structural equation modelling for analyzing the Path using Smart PLS 4. The obtained results not only suggested that there is a positive and direct impact of implementing LM Practices on SCRs and SP and SP influenced by improved SCRs among supply chains, but the indirect effect also confirmed the mediation of SCR between Lean practices and the SP, which consequ...
Critical factors of lean implementation in manufacturing environments
2008
Although Lean is certainly not a new concept, it is doubtless still relevant, being one of the most promoted and competitive management models in use today. Many companies have adopted the Lean Culture with success but a large number has failed when attempting this goal. As companies try to implement and apply Lean in response to competitive pressures, they often become one-dimensional in their approach. As the main purpose, this document seeks to study and analyse the underlying reasons surrounding companies’ failures in their Lean initiatives and how to implement them in a successful and sustainable way. This document is based on a thorough literature research concerning the success and failure of Lean implementations, enriched through an assortment of individual interviews with Lean experts, acting as a precursor for the development of a novel roadmap as a practical guide to open up a window of opportunity for managers, who want to become Lean in an effective and sustainable way.
Successful lean implementation: Organizational culture and soft lean practices
2015
Successful lean plants are characterized by a specific organizational culture.Hard lean practices are order-qualifier activities for lean plants.Soft lean practices should be considered as strategic order-winner factors.Greater use of soft (rather than hard) LM practices differentiates successful lean plants.Lean management (LM) is a managerial approach for improving processes based on a complex system of interrelated socio-technical practices. Recently, debate has centered on the role of organizational culture (OC) in LM. This paper aims to contribute to this debate by examining whether plants that successfully implement LM are characterized by a specific OC profile and extensively adopt soft LM practices. Data were analyzed from the High Performance Manufacturing (HPM) project dataset using a multi-group approach. The results revealed that a specific OC profile characterizes successful lean plants; in particular, when compared to unsuccessful lean plants, they show a higher institutional collectivism, future orientation, a humane orientation, and a lower level of assertiveness. While a high level of institutional collectivism, future orientation, and humane orientation are common features of high performers in general, a low level of assertiveness is typical only of successful lean plants. In addition, successful lean plants use soft LM practices more extensively than unsuccessful lean plants (i.e., lean practices concerning people and relations, such as small group problem solving, employees’ training to perform multiple tasks, supplier partnerships, customer involvement, and continuous improvement), while they do not differ significantly in terms of hard LM practices (i.e., lean technical and analytical tools). For managers, the results indicate that, in order to implement LM successfully, it is fundamental to go beyond LM technicalities by adopting soft practices and nurturing the development of an appropriate OC profile.
