Puppets as an Educational Resource in Early Childhood Education: Art, Therapy, and Literature (original) (raw)

The Relevance of the Art of Puppetry in the Early Childhood Education in the Current Global Realities

The Journal of the School of languages, 2010

For so long now, puppets and the art of puppetry have only been seen as cultural treasures and not as intimate and inevitable partners of children in their early education. As a result, this art form (puppetry) has been reduced to a mere artifact, toy or decorative art, instead of being a “complete” and “pure” art form that can be effectively used in educating a child.. Through researches, it has been observed that puppetry has the ability to stimulate and catalyse teaching and learning processes in children as well as in adults. No doubt, puppetry is a very old traditional form of art that is used in many cultures but it seems that its usefulness has not been fully discovered by teachers, especially the early childhood educators in Nigeria. Therefore, the thrust of this paper is to re-echo the importance of the art of puppetry in the early education of a child, especially in the face of this current global economic realities. This paper suggests that puppets should not be seen as a product of art for art sake, but should be seen as a viable art form which has the innate ability not only to develop children’s emotional abilities, also to assist teachers in their pedagogical exploits. Consequently, the use of this creative art – puppets ought not to be silenced in the early childhood curriculum. It should be seen as a possible stimulant in making children respond to learning in classrooms and in all their early childhood pursuit.

Puppets in the Child's Development

The paper underlines the importance of puppets in the child’s development in different areas. The puppet provides the child a kind of cover or disguise to hide behind. So also a timid child finds the courage to speak, to express his/her own emotions and to open his/her secrets to his puppet and through it to his/her audience. Thus the puppet helps the child to communicate much more spontaneously, avoiding stressed relations, especially to adults. The puppet is an authority, selected by the child himself. Contemporary attempts to use narration as a method of rediscovering and stabilisation of the child’s personality are supported by using puppets. Regarding the fact that a child is not able to verbally express all his feelings, puppet heroes help him find words and more: another point of view or perspective. In addition children, accustomed to using puppets in their everyday conversations, have richer a vocabulary, they are able to understand the semiotic-symbolic value of visual signs and the language of non-verbal communication, which is important in identifying their real abilities and progress in important areas of development - cognition, sensation, motor co-ordination, social skills…and least but not last - language expression. Through my experience in working with puppets I believe in the magical power of the puppet in all kinds of communication with children, enlightening their talents and different forms of their creativity

Puppetry Activities in Early Childhood Programmes

Southeast Asia Early Childhood, 2021

Puppetry plays an edutainment role in playing and learning activities for nursery and kindergarten children. This qualitative study was aimed to investigate the benefits of puppetry activities for children who were enrolled in early childhood programs. In-depth interviews were conducted with four respondents, two of whom were child care providers from the nursery and two teachers were from kindergarten. The study implied that puppetry activities should be integrated into early childhood education can sustain children's overall development.

Theory of puppets?: A critique of the use of puppets as stimulus materials in psychological research with young children

Cognitive Development, 2022

Much research exploring young children's capacity to understand the actions of other people, either in terms of mental states such as beliefs and desires or in terms of deontic powers such as rights and responsibilities, uses puppets, toys, or fictional characters in stories or cartoons as stimulus materials. This is puzzling, since puppets, toys and cartoon characters have neither beliefs and desires nor rights and responsibilities. In this article we explore this practice and point out that the experimental task is being "framed" as pretense. This framing makes it difficult to interpret the results of such research, reduces its ecological validity, and reveals an odd relationship between the ethnopsychology that is studied and the scientific psychology that is employed. All this raises the concern that what this research actually discloses is young children's "theory of puppets." An important issue for developmental research was articulated clearly in an early reflection on the use of puppets, dolls, and films in such research.

"I Teach Better with the Puppet" - Use of Puppet as a Mediating Tool in Kindergarten Education – an Evaluation

A focus of interest among researchers and educators is to find teaching methods adjusted to developmental aspects in early childhood. Teaching that generates significant learning and creates motivation, interest and enjoyment in young children is a real challenge in contemporary education. The effectiveness of using puppets in early childhood has been demonstrated in clinical areas as having the potential to create communication, increase involvement and change attitudes. However, there is limited research literature relating to the use of puppets as a teaching method, and therefore a methodology based on measurement and evaluation is lacking in this field. This article presents partial results of a broader study that examined the influence of an intervention program integrating a puppet as a mediation tool on learning motivation, and enhancing literacy achievements in regular and special kindergarten children. One of the aims of this research was to evaluate, from mediators' perspectives, the use of puppets as a mediation tool for kindergarten children. This evaluation was carried out by means of personal interviews with each of the mediators at the end of the intervention program. From the interviews it became apparent that the mediators considered the puppets to be an effective tool for young children's developmental aspects, by means of which they could relate to cognitive, emotional, and social realms. Mediation using puppets facilitated learning processes, while using puppets, children's cooperation level increased, as did interest, attention span and their involvement in learning interaction was evident. The puppets contributed to the mediators' self-confidence and to their sense of professionalism. During the puppets mediation, the mediators felt that they were teaching in a clear manner, and they felt they were being interesting and. interactive. By using puppets, they succeeded in creating a close personal connection with the children. These findings have an applicable contribution in presenting the effectiveness of the puppet as a mediation tool for use in kindergarten and with special needs children. Using Puppets Making To Promote Engagement and Motivating In Educational Study 1

The PUPPETS uses puppets as a stimulus for children to engage in conversations involving reasoning in education. Data were gathered using technically a variety of methods, including audio and video recording, and analysed using an open coding approach based on grounded theory. The data indicate that puppets are engaging and motivating for children; that they promote talk involving reasoning; that they can be particularly effective with reluctant speakers; that they appear to be effective across the whole primary age range; and that they promote significant changes in teachers' professional practice. We discuss different types of puppet dance & making process. This process style developed of new generation. We examined scientifically & technically modernized in puppet dance.

Puppetry as an art therapy technique with emotionally disturbed children

1983

Puppetry has long been used as a diagnostic and therapeutic technique with emotionally disturbed children and has been well documented in the literature. Limited research has been done on the creation of puppets in therapy or on the use of puppetry in art therapy, This thesis outlines methods of using puppetry as a group art therapy technique uuiih emotionally disturbed children. The technique includes both diagnostic and therapeutic uses of puppetry. The psycholooical rationale of puppetry is reviewed, Two art therapy qroups of emotionally disturbed children were treated for ten weeks using puppetry. The children made various types of puppets and spontaneous puppet play was encouraced, Material from these sessions is examined in terms of psychodynamics in relation to individual case histories. This thesis proposes that puppetry is a valuable art therapy technique with emotionally disturbed children. Recommendations for further research in this area are included,

The puppet as a metaphor: The role of puppetry in teacher education

Literature in ELT .. Selected Papers from the….. 44th FAAPI Conference, 2019

Puppetry as a technique provides exciting opportunities for foreign language learners of all ages to express ideas, explore feelings and react to literature. Puppets also make a strong link to literacy and social skills and pave the way to teachers’ assessment of what has been taught or read. This paper shares some findings regarding the use of puppetry in pre-service Teacher Education, showing its relation to Literature while fostering puppet construction in two Colleges in Buenos Aires and Río Grande.
