The Relationship Between Parenting Styles and Creativity in a Sample of Jamaican Children

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between parenting styles and creativity among a sample of Jamaican students and their parents. A total of 54 parents and 66 students participated in the study. Results revealed that the authoritarian style of parenting is the most salient predictor of creativity in children and that this relationship was negative. In addition, parents’ level of creativity was greater than that of their children and was also predictive of children's level of creativity. The creativity level of children in the sample was lower than that of the normative sample. Because creativity is linked to critical thinking, the implications of this study is especially pertinent to the Jamaican population, which is noted for its authoritarian style of parenting.

Comparisons of the indicative items in Study 1 with items reported by previous resea¡ch revealed only moderate agreement. The data in Study 1 also ¡evealed that parents and teadrerslook to favorable cha¡acteristics when describing creative child¡en, a¡d r:¡favo¡able draracteristics when describing uncreative child¡en. Cor¡elational analyses in Study 2 indicated that the i¡rdicative ¡atings of mothers were positively ¡elated to those of fathers and negatively associated with both the mothe¡s' and fathe¡s' cont¡aindicative ratings. These findings indicate that mothers and fathers agreed with one another about the creativity of thei¡ children.

The participants of the research were 80 parents (40 parents in the experimental group, 40 parents in the control group) from a primary school in Ankara, Turkey. Content analysis was applied to analyze the qualitative data. The pretest results have indicated that there were no differences between parents groups according to the knowledge level about the creative thinking. According to posttest results, the knowledge levels of parents in the experimental group who were given 10-hour parent education seminar were increased. However, the knowledge levels of the parents who have not given any education in the control group, were remained the same. Besides, experimental group parents have more information about creating home environments that enhance creativity rather than control group parents. According to the findings, parents' perspectives in the experimental group on the creative thinking skills have changed after the parent education seminar. However, the perspectives of the parent in the control group have not changed.
