Rethinking the Role of Family in Combating Juvenile Delinquency in Nigeria
American Journal of Arts and Educational Administration Research
Many families have failed in performing their major role of protection, provision for their members, socializing their members and ensuring they conform to the socially acceptable patterns of behaviour in society, thereby increasing the rate of adolescent delinquencies in society. The literature emphasizes that the home front is the root cause of juvenile delinquency. In this context, this paper examines the role of the family in adolescent antisocial behaviour and maintains that the family sustains the corrective ability to combat juvenile delinquency. The paper found that divorce, improper use of the internet by juveniles, dysfunctionality in the home, single parenthood, substance abuse, weak parenting, poverty, and constructed realities by the media, amongst others, were examined as the cause of these behaviours. The paper explains the challenges many homes face in raising lawabiding citizens and the aftermath effect of these challenges. However, this could be tackled by developing a child's security, values and skills. Consequentially, the paper recommends families placing more emphasis on meeting the psychological need of the adolescent, family bonding, and cohesion as well as adequate provision for every child by parents and guardians to curb this menace.
Juvenile delinquency is one of the most serious problems that need to be addressed both in developed and developing countries. In the U.S.A. the definition of juvenile delinquency embraces a wide range of situations when the law is broken by individuals who are underage, i.e. by those who have not reached 18 years. Such cases may include matters from violating the curfew to committing a murder (Basics on Juvenile Delinquency).Child rearing practices are often associated, although to a varying extent, with juvenile delinquency as rooted in the negative experience acquired during childhood years and exacerbated by faulty child rearing practices. Some of the latter can be interpreted as malpractices causing antisocial behavior of children and teenagers. However, a linkage between child rearing practices and juvenile delinquency and its magnitude have not been studied in depth so far. Articles published in recent years provide an outline of major features of parenting styles and practices that can act as possible predictors of juvenile delinquency specified (Hoeve, Dubas, & Gerris, 2009). These features that are of multifaceted nature need to be studied in different national, cultural, and socioeconomic settings. A comparative analysis of different child rearing practices used in the developed and developing countries against the background of juvenile delinquency suggests that factors that can predict the outcomes of the types of social behavior of young people have universal nature. However, they may operate differently in different settings of family and wider social environment and demonstrate their correlation with social, economic and cultural conditions of a given society, community or family.

The main objective of the present research was to explore the differences in the perceived parenting styles i.e., authoritarian, authoritative and permissiveness, among delinquent and non-delinquent adolescents. Perceived parenting style is directly related with behavioral problems and delinquency among adolescents. The sample (n=92) of juvenile delinquents (n=46) was taken from Hyderabad jail. A matched random sample of non-delinquents (n=46) was also taken from Hyderabad. The age range of the respondents was 15-19 years. Findings revealed significant differences in the perceived parenting style among delinquents and non-delinquents. Delinquents perceived more authoritarian paternal and permissive maternal parenting style as compared to non-delinquents. Findings have implications for the effective parenting and its influence on reducing delinquency among youngsters.

DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.24018/ejsocial.2021.1.3.44 Vol 1 | Issue 3 | June 2021 21 Abstract — The rising cases of delinquency among male teenagers is a feedback of sorts that the family system that is the nurturing context of children has failed to effectively protect the teenagers against negative influences. The scenario, has brought the nurturing role of parents into sharp focus. The purpose of this study was to establish the influence of the parenting styles on male juvenile delinquency at the Kamiti Youth Correction and Training Center (KYCTC), which is within Kiambu County, Kenya. The study was guided by Baumrind’s parenting styles theory which categorizes parenting styles on the basis of responsiveness and demandingness in the parenting role. The study used purposive sampling method and simple random technique to select a sample of 68 males aged between 15 and 18 years from a target population of 120 delinquents at the KYCTC. The study used the ex post facto design. In this ...

Juvenile delinquency refers to delinquent and criminal behaviour among young people as they negotiate the transition from childhood to adulthood in an increasingly complex and confusing world. Although the issue of juvenile delinquency is an age long problem, it seems that the juvenile delinquency of the past cannot be compared with that of the present era. The antisocial behaviours often associated with the juvenile delinquents' include vandalism, drug abuse, weapon carrying, alcohol abuse, rape, examination malpractices, school violence, bullying, cultism, truancy, school drop-outs, to mention but a few. Obviously, unless something is done to roll back the wave of juvenile delinquency, the prospect of a better, safer and more prosperous society emerging in Nigeria will remain elusive. The family is the foundation of human society.
Investigating the Relationship between Parenting Styles and Juvenile Delinquent Behaviour
Universal Journal of Educational Research, 2020
Parenting style is very important in influencing students' juvenile delinquent behaviour so that it will not go against the norm of society and rules regulated. Therefore, this study examined on parenting styles and its relationship to juvenile delinquent behaviour using mixed method design. Surveys were distributed to 187 students and interview sessions were conducted to five students to explore the relationship between parenting styles (authoritative, authoritarian, permissive) and delinquent behaviours (verbal, physical, sexual, antisocial). Study result shows that there is a significant relation between authoritarian parenting style and juvenile delinquent behaviour. However, authoritative and permissive parenting styles do not show any significant relationship. This means that parents who like to control and restrict the freedom of their children influence the behavior of juvenile students. Data collected from the interview shows that authoritarian type of parents have a lot more influence towards juvenile delinquent behaviour. This is because authoritarian parenting style prioritizes a high control level to make the children listen to them in making decisions causing the children to feel conflicted, less communicative and lost their trust in parents. Therefore, this study will explain on how parents play an important role in having faith in their children so that they will be responsible and smart in limiting and preserving their behaviour.
