The environment is a very important component necessary for the existence of both man and other biotic organisms. The degree of sustainability of the physical environment is an index of the survival and well-being of the entire components in it. Additionally, it is not sufficient to try disposing toxic/deleterious substances with any known method. The best method of sustaining the environment is such that returns back all the components (wastes) in a recyclable way so that the waste becomes useful and helps the biotic and abiotic relationship to maintain an aesthetic and healthy equilibrium that characterizes an ideal environment. In this study, the method investigated includes biological method of environmental sustainability which seeks to investigate the various biotechnological tools (biotools) in current use and those undergoing investigations for future use.

Waste and Water disposal in developing countries including Nigeria is saddled with several challenges resulting in water pollution, occurrence of water borne diseases, poverty and even death in severe cases. Over the years, several efforts have been put in place by both the Public and Private Sectors in the country aimed at tackling it, this had however not yielded any positive results. It has become rather imperative that research and development efforts aimed at addressing this be quickly put in place to have a well secured and managed waste disposal; solid and liquid for the well-being of the citizens and for good health. The National Biotechnology Development Agency (NABDA), an Agency of the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology is desirous and working assiduously at achieving not only a well secured environment, but also looking at ways at promoting a clean environment using Ecosans. This paper is thus focused at the research and development knowledge aimed at the promotion of Ecosans in Nigeria especially in the rural areas at achieving the much talked about Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) of the United Nations. Several environmental problems arising from man's activity have to be solved in a cost-effective and an environmentally friendly approach. In this paper, a framework for an integrated management and control of solid waste in the south-east zone of Nigeria is presented. The major activities include collection and transportation of solid waste to designated areas, separation of reusable components (recycling) and bioconversion of biodegradable (biowaste) components into organic fertiliser and biogas. These activities will involve the communities, the industries, Small-and Medium-Scale Enterprises (SMEs) having the capacity of 'process and production integrated environmental technologies'. Biotechnological conversion of biowaste into enriched humus end product and biogas, and production of other goods and services using solid waste components as raw materials by the SMEs are the areas of 'additive environmental technologies'. The overall framework entails the application of modern-and future-oriented technologies that would provide the appropriate tools and direction for managing any backlog of solid waste and future pile-ups. Cooperation among government, public and research organisation is paramount.

This study assessed “The Role of Biotechnology in Solving Emerging Environmental Health Problems in Nigeria, (A case Study of Yammfy Farms Nigeria Limited, Ilemona Offa, Kwara State). The quality of life on earth is linked inextricably to the overall quality of the environment sustaining it. Biotechnology occupies a unique position in applied sciences in its efforts to enhance the quality of human life and improve the living condition through the development of bioderived product. The specific objective and research questions were formulated for the study. Literatures were extensively reviewed to provide multi-dimensional view and perspective of biotechnology globally. The study employed descriptive research design with questions and observation of phenomena as the main instruments. Data were collected from fifty (50) sampled respondents randomly through structured questionnaires and these were analyzed using tables, charts, figures and percentages. The result obtained from the field work showed the mutual relationship between Biotechnology and Agriculture (Livestock Keeping). The results formed an essential tool in its endeavour as it can provide new approach for understanding, managing, preserving and restoring the environmental quality. At the same time, the results formed the bases for summary, conclusion and recommendations.

Studies on the Effects of Man's Activities on the Natural Ecosystem and Biotechnological Solutions in restoring the ecosystem have been conducted. The Obanliku L.G.A of Cross River State, Nigeria, was chosen for the study because of its unique ecology, and practical demonstration of ignorance of the people in the region, in dealing with the ecological systems. The study shows that bush burning is a common practice of the people as a clearing strategy for agricultural purposes, and very often the wild fire goes beyond the farmers' control destroying the ecosystem, and gases such as carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide are emitted into the environment. These gases destroy the ozone layer which protects the environment, plants and animals from the direct effects of the sun. Fishing activities on river 'Orieh,'(a meandering river that stretches over 60km and empties into the Atlantic ocean), is done with the unprofessional method of using chemicals such as gamelin 20, vitox 85, and aldrin powder, that result to massive death of aquatic organisms and ignorantly to enhance harvest of the aquatic animals. Deforestation for: timber, domestic energy, agricultural and constructional purposes is done without control, resulting to loss of endanger species, properties, global warming, with its associated sea level rise and flooding due to melting of the polar ice. Waste from agricultural activities, plastics, electronic devices, human waste (faeces) and oil spills resulting from subsurface exploitation and exploration failures, activities of vandals and transportation accidents have devastating consequences on the environment and human health. Mechanical clearing of farm lands should be encouraged as the biomas derived from clearing can be used for generating bio-energy and environmentally friendly fertilizers as compared to the inorganic fertilizer. Selective fishing strategies should be adopted, such as the use of nets, where the young fishes are returned back to the river. Government should put enabling laws in place to guide the extinction of endangered flora and fauna. Plants are known to be totipotent, thus, biotechnology is the ultimate solution to: Aggressive Reforestation and aforestation, organic waste recycling technologies, such as the generation of bio-energy from the biomass, the use of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) bar-coding to guard against illegal exploitation of game reserves, like transformed elephant tusk, genetic engineering to produce drought and disease resistant hybrid that will withstand adverse environmental conditions, and bio-sensors that will dictate areas that have been contaminated with crude oil spills. Regular medical checkup on the people and environmental awareness programs should be done in schools and religious gatherings. Indicators of a depleted environment includes the following: Global temperature rise, flooding, poor air quality, poor ground water quality, poor soil fertility, outbreaks of epidemics and pandemics, extinction of flora and fauna.
