GROWTH AND YIELD OF CUCUMBER (CUCUMIS SATIVUS L.) CULTIVARS IN RESPONSE TO DIFFERENT NITROGEN LEVELS
Nitrogen is considered as one of the critical mineral nutrients for healthy growth of plants. Hence its judicious use is necessary for sustainability of crop production. The study was carried out during the year 2015 to investigate the growth and yield of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) cultivars in response to different nitrogen levels. The trial was conducted at the experimental area of the Department of Horticulture, Sindh Agriculture University Tandojam in randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. The growth and yield performance of three cucumber cultivars (Liza, Squees Green and Sindhi Wango) were investigated to four nitrogen levels (0, 50, 100 and 150 kg ha-1). The results exhibited that all the growth and yield attributes were significantly (P<0.05) affected by various N levels and cultivars. The crop treated with a higher N level of 150 kg significantly showed maximum values for most of the evaluated traits. The crop fertilized with N level of 150.0 kg ha-1 produced 198.57 cm vine length, 93.333 leaves vine-1 , 46.12 days to flower initiation, 16.147 cm fruit length, 14.227 fruit vine-1 , 2068.8 g fruit weight vine-1 and 16.025 tons ha-1 fruit yield. The results further showed that the crop fertilized with N at 100.0 kg ha-1 produced 174.28 cm vine length, 81.889 leaves vine-1 , 43.767 days to flower initiation, 14.993 cm fruit length, 12.610 fruits vine-1 , 1685.3 g fruit weight vine-1 and 12.011 tons ha-1 fruit yield. On the contrary control plots which were not fertilized showed an adverse effect on plant growth and yield and produced 105.62 cm vine length, 49.778 leaves vine-1 , 38.380 days to flower initiation, 10.380 cm fruit length, 5.497 fruit vine-1 , 466.6 g fruit weight vine-1 and 4.914 ton ha-1 fruit yield. Regarding the cultivars, Squees Green significantly showed better performance and comparatively produced higher values for most of the investigated traits as compared to Liza and Sindhi Wango. Moreover, among interactions, the interaction of (150 kg ha-1 × Squees Green) showed the maximum fruit yield 18.812 tons ha-1. On the basis of the findings of the current study, it is concluded that higher N level of 150 kg ha-1 showed significantly higher values for most of the growth and yield investigated parameters. Hence, cucumber may be fertilized with N Level of 150 kg ha-1 for better growth and yield.

Rates of nitrogen application were studied in relation to commercial yield and fruit quality of cucumber plants (Cucumis sativus L. cv. Bunex). All plants were grown under controlled conditions in a greenhouse. Treatments consisted of the application of N as KNO 3 (N1, 2.5 g m-2 ; N2, 5 g m-2 ; N3, 10 g m-2 ; N4, 20 g m-2 ; and N5, 40 g m-2). The fruits of cucumber from the N3 and N4 treatments were best for human consumption and economic profit. These N application rates encouraged a good relationship between commercial yield and fruit quality. The N5 rate resulted in low commercial production and low quality; the fruit had the greatest NO 3and the least Ca concentrations, which diminished firmness of the fruit. Finally, the N1 and N2 rates produced poor yield and poor commercial quality.

The experiment was carried out at the Agricultural Research Station of the College of Agriculture and the Marshlands / University of Thi-Qar, located in Al-Mustufawia for the agricultural season (2019-2020). The study was the effect of cultivar and organic and mineral fertilization on the qualitative and quantitative characteristics of cucumber crops grown in greenhouses, and applied according to the factorial experiments inside the split plots, using the complete randomized sectors with three replications. The factors of research were: two cultivars (Datis and Sakata) occupied the main plots, three levels of organic fertilization occupied the secondary plots which included control treatment O 1 , cow manure O 2 (2.457 tons of greenhouse-1) and poultry manure O 3 (3.713 tons of greenhouse-1) and the third factor was four levels of mineral fertilization (NPK) including control treatment M 1 , M 2 (2.250 kg. dunam-1), M 3 (3.350 kg. dunam-1), and M 4 (4.450 kg. dunam-1) which occupied the sub-plots. The results showed that Datis cultivar significantly outperformed Sakata cultivar in yield per plant, total yield, leaf content of nitrogen and phosphorus, and fruit content of carbohydrates, reaching (1.402 kg. plant-1 , 24.24 tons .greenhoues-1 , 2.2517%, 0.4069%, 1.2876%) respectively. On the other hand, the treatment of organic fertilizer O 3 recorded a significant effect in the following crop traits such as leaf area, total yield, leaf content of nitrogen and phosphorus, and fruit content of carbohydrate, reaching (178.0 cm 2 , 24.36 tons. greenhouse-1 , 2.5017%, 0.4608%, 1.3561%). Respectively compared to other treatments, total yield, leaf content of nitrogen and phosphorus, reaching (180.1 cm 2 , 25.88 t. greenhoues-1 , and 2.3478%, and 0.4561%) to other treatments. The treatment M 2 significantly outperformed in yield per plant (1.682) kg. plant-1 and treatment M 3 significantly exceeded the fruit's carbohydrate content, reaching (1.2930%). All the combinations among this study's treatments were compared to meet their significant effecting on all traits.

An experiment was conducted to study the effect of different spacing and fertigation levels on growth and yield of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) cv. KPCH-1 under naturally ventilated polyhouse. The experiment was laid out following Factorial Randomized Block Design (FRBD) with three replications. The experiment was comprised of total nine treatment combinations of two factors, three levels of spacing viz. 60 cm × 35 cm (S1), 60 cm × 35 cm (S2) and 60 cm × 55 cm (S3) with three levels of fertigation viz. 80% RDF (F1), 100% RDF (F2) and 120% RDF (F3). Among the treatment combinations, S3F2treatment (60 cm ×55 cm with 100% RDF) showed the best interaction effect for vine length at 30 DAT (69.47 cm), at 60 DAT (229.40cm), at final harvest (339.73 cm),crop duration (103.93 days)number of fruits per vine (37.67), fruit length (17.13 cm), fruit girth (11.57 cm),average fruit weight (122.33 g), fruit yield per vine (4.20 kg), days to first flower appearance (28.13 days), intermodal length (8.90 cm), nodal position of first flower (2.73) and days to first picking of fruits (35.93 days). The maximum vegetative growth and yield of the cucumber were found in S3F2 treatment. The maximum available nitrogen, available phosphorus and available potassium were found in S3F3 (60 cm ×55 cm with120 % RDF as compared to initial fertilizer in polyhouse. The maximum benefit-cost ratio was found in the treatment S3F2 (2.90) followed by S3F1 (2.67). Based on these findings, it is recommended that spacing of 60 cm × 55 cm and application of fertilizer with 100% RDF under naturally ventilated polyhouse is economical and found suitable for vegetative growth and yield of the cucumber.
Phosphorus, Potassium and Nitrate Contents in Fruit of Pickling Cucumbers Grown in a High Tunnel

Pickling cucumbers are highly important both for fresh consumption and for canning industry. This study aimed to compare differences in yield and quality of eight pickling cucumber cultivars, including ‘Cor 12004’, ‘IGG 2010’, ‘IGG 2020’, ‘SM 5322’, ‘SM 5323’, ‘Zayin 201’, ‘Zayin 175201’ and ‘Trilogy’. The cucumber cultivars were laid out in a high tunnel crop and evaluated for vegetative traits (i.e. vine length, nodes per vine and branches per vine), yield attributes (i.e. fruits per main stem, average weight of fruit and fruits weight per plant) and fruits quality components (nitrate, phosphate and potassium mg kg-1). The results showed significant differences (P<0.05) in vegetative traits and yield attributes among cultivars. The Effects of Inorganic Fertilizer on the Yield of Two Varieties of Cucumber (Cucumis sativus L
Field experiments were conducted for three years during the rainy seasons of 2006 to 2008 at the Teaching and Research Farm of Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma (Lat. 6 0 45 1 North and Long. 6 0 08' East and an altitude of 460 meters above sea level). Compound fertilizer (N.P.K.20:10:10) was applied at 0, 100, 200, 300 and 400 kg/ha to two cucumber varieties (Ashley and Palmetto) using a 2 x 5 factorial scheme replicated three times. Data were collected on vegetative traits, yield and yield components of cucumber and statistically analyzed. Results revealed significant differences (P< 0.05) among the varieties in terms of vine length, number of branches and leaf area, The growth and yield attributes of cucumber including the vine length, number of leaves per plant, number of branches, leaf area, number of fruits per plant, fruit length, fruit girth, fruit weight per plant, fruit number per plant and total yield per hectare increased significantly (P< 0.05) with increase in inorganic fertilizer application up to the highest level.
Two field experiments were carried out at a private vegetable farm during the two growing seasons of (2012 and 2013) to study the effects of different combinations of mineral fertilizers of nitrogen and phosphorus with bio-fertilizers of Nitrobien and phosphorien on growth, yield and fruit quality as well as chemical constituents of cucumber. The obtained results could be summarized as follows: (1)-Application of 75% recommended dose of mineral NP fertilizers in the presence of bio-fertilizers, i.e., Nitrobien and phosphorien significantly affected positively most of vegetative growth characteristics (stem length, leaf area, dry weight and number of branches/plant), also, this treatment significantly affected the earliness of female flowers production, number of male flowers, number of female flowers and sex ratio in cucumber plants in both seasons of the study. (2)-Application of 75% recommended dose of mineral NP fertilizers with biofertilizers (Nitrobien and phosphorien) significantly increased total yield followed by the treatment of 75% P + phosphorien as well as improvedfruit quality characteristics (fruit weight, fruit length and fruit shape) and increased also ascorbic acid and total soluble solids (TSS) in fruits followed by the treatments of 100% mineral NP (control) and 75% N + Nitrobien treatment in both seasons. However, the highest early yield was obtained from control treatment (full NP recommended dose) followed by 75% NP recommended dose with biofertilizers Nitrobien and phosphorien and 75% N recommended dose plus Nitrobien in both seasons.

Field experiments have been carried out at Teaching and Research Farm of the Federal University of Agriculture Zuru (lat. 12012.99' N; long. 40 21.90'E; 197m above sea level), at some point of 2020/21 and 2021/22 rainy seasons withinside of the Northern Guinea Savannah area of Nigeria. Today, greenhouse cultivation of vegetables, especially cucumber in soilless culture has been developed in different parts of the world. Soilless culture creates the possibility that farmers in a shorter time with less effort produce more yield. This research was done in the greenhouses center in Islamic Azad University of Khorasgan with three kinds of nutrient solutions and so completely randomized block design with three replication and five bushes per every replication was done. The media was composition of perlite and cocopite (v/v = 50%). Plant height, stem diameter, intensity of leaf colour, leaf area index, stiffness of fruit tissue, yield of fruits, dry matter weight were measured in every treatments. Comparison of means of cucumber fruit yield showed that there are no significant difference between solutions No 3, 2 and 1 in 5% level. The results showed that No 3 nutrient solution had most effect on the intensity of leaf colour, stem diameter, plant height and leaf area index as compared with other nutrient solutions during the growth season. No 2 nutrient solution had most effect on the weight of plant dry matter, weight of fruit dry matter and stiffness of fruit tissue. The height means of cucumber plants in treatments had no significant difference at 5% level. The comparison of stem diameter means showed that No 3 and 2 nutrient solution had significant difference at 5% level with No 2 solution but it had not any significant difference with No 1 nutrient solution at 5% level. The weight means of dry matter of fruit and green colour intensity of leaves had no significant difference between No 3 and 1 nutrition solutions but this nutrition solutions had significant difference with No 2 solution at 5% level. The comparision of leaf area index means showed that all of nutrient solutions had no significant difference at 5% level. The results showed that stiffness of fruit tissue in No 3 and 1 nutrient solutions had not any significant differences but between No 3 and 2 nutrient solutions had significant difference in 5% level. The means of dry matter weight of plant in No 3, 2 and 1 nutrient solutions had no significant difference in 5% level.
