Prevalence Of Gingivitis In Patients Undergoing Orthodontic Treatment Of Ages 18-25 Years-A Retrospective Study Research Article

SciDoc Publishers, 2020

The use of fixed Orthodontics made of wire and brackets is a common treatment that can affect the gingival health. The constant irritation and poor maintenance in patients may lead to gingival inflammation if not maintained properly .Improper oral hygiene during the course of orthodontic treatment is the leading reason for the cause of gingivitis . 18- 25 years is the most common age where majority of the current population undergo orthodontic treatment for aesthetic look , this makes it an appropriate age of study to see the improper oral hygiene leading to be the cause of gingivitis in many .The purpose of this study was to evaluate the association of orthodontic treatment and gingival health in those patients .Evaluation of 225 patients of age group 18-25 years undergoing Orthodontic treatment in Saveetha Dental College between June 2019 to March 2020 was done and they were also evaluated for the presence of gingivitis . Excel tabulation was done and data was imported to SPSS to generate results From the study we were able to evaluate and see that gingivitis was most often present in patients undergoing orthodontic treatment .Gingival Heath is very important and in patients undergoing orthodontic treatment , due to poor maintenance , presence of plaque increases hence leading to gingivitis.

Assessment of the prevalence of periodontal pathogens in the plaque and gingiva of patients with fixed and removable orthodontic appliance

2021

AIM: To assess the prevalence of periodontal pathogens in patients with fixed and removable orthodontic appliance. INTRODUCTION: Fixed and removable orthodontic appliances may complicate an optimal oral hygiene, and this may result in accumulation of dental plaque and gingival inflammation. Evidence indicates the gram-negative obligate anaerobe Porphyromonas gingivalis and A.actinomycetecomitans as putative periodontal pathogens in subgingival dental plaque. P. gingivalis plays an important role in the onset and progression of periodontal diseases, and it is implicated as an indicator of periodontal disease. The aim of this study was to evaluate the occurrence of periodontal pathogens in patients with clinical manifestation of plaque-associated gingivitis treated with fixed and removable orthodontic appliances. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was done using convenience sampling of 10 patients undergoing orthodontic treatment from the Orthodontics Department of Saveetha Dental Colle...

A questionnaire study to assess and evaluate the common gingival problems faced by patients undergoing fixed orthodontic treatment

IP International Journal of Maxillofacial Imaging

Background: Fixed orthodontic components used in orthodontic treatment often act as a nidus for the retention of plaque and biofilm thereby resulting in Plaque associated gingivitis. This is because of the classic interplay of the host and the microbial ecosystem around the components. The common gingival changes in color, contour, texture, shape & size should alarm the patient and concerned orthodontist to prevent its further progression. The orthodontist and the patient should be made aware of the undesirable complications associated with the gingival response to the treatment. Materials and Methods: This Questionnaire study was performed to assess the common gingival problems faced by the patients undergoing fixed orthodontic therapy. Results: Our study revealed that the majority of patients of both groups were cautious in maintaining good oral hygiene. A small group of patients of both groups of treatment complained of food lodgment and also experienced pain, sometimes itchy and swollen gums with bleeding from the gums. Conclusion: Oral health lies majorly in the hands of the patient by ensuring correct, efficient and meticulous oral hygiene practices. Every orthodontic patient should be motivated and educated with regards to the changes that occur in the gingiva with respect to the orthodontic treatment and good oral hygiene practices.

Klju ne re i: gingivitis, fiksni ortodontski aparati, oralna higijena SUMMARY Introduction: During orthodontic treatment, the risk of gingivitis, periodontal disease and dental caries is increased. For good gingival health during orthodontic therapy, patients must be educated about the importance of daily oral hygiene and also given instructions on plaquecontrol techniques and how to use plaque removal devices properly. Objectives: The aim of this study was to present risk factors for gingivitis during treatment with fixed orthodontic appliances as well as methods and resources for prevention of this widespread disease. Conclusion: Maintaining proper oral hygiene is of great benefit not only for gingival health but also for the success of orthodontic treatment and maintenance of treatment results. Beside healthy gingiva, favourable habits in oral hygiene remain life-long.

GINGIVAL HEALTH IN PATIENTS WITH FIXED ORTHODONTIC APPLIANCES

Stomatolos̆ki vjesnik. Stomatological review

The aim of the study was to evaluate the gingival health status in 30 patients treated with fixed orthodontic appliances, selected from Orthodontic Clinic at University Dental Clinic Center in Skopje. The patients were 16 years of age. IDP, IGI and GBI indexes were performed before and six months after fixed orthodontic treatment. The patients were not educated in maintaining oral hygiene. Data was statistically analyzed using SPSS version 6. The results showed that the condition of periodontium during orthodontic treatment is determinated by the level of oral hygiene. Orthodontic patients don't have enough information regarding the maintainance of appropriate oral hygiene. Instructions to patients are considered as an important factor for gingival health.

Assessment of Gingival Health Status among Patients with Fixed Orthodontic Appliance

Polytechnic Journal

Fixed orthodontic appliances corrupt plaque removal, proper oral hygiene, and gingival health so periodontal evaluation is important to be checked in every appointment. The aim of the present study was to assess gingival health among patients with a fixed orthodontic appliance. A clinical comparative study conducted on 25 patients with an aged ranged from 15 to 25 years. Clinical parameters included plaque index (PI), gingival index (GI), and bleeding on probing (BOP) were recorded at base line before starting orthodontic treatment and after 1 month of treatment. A double paired t-test was applied to the data collected for statistical analysis. The mean value of PI (1.11), GI (1.155), and BOP (0.600) scores was increased after placement of fixed orthodontic appliance, but with no statistically significant difference with base line for PI (P-value = 0.596), GI (P-value = 0.355), and BOP (P-value = 0.256), respectively. Regarding age group, mean PI (1.46), GI (1.22), and BOP (0.875) w...

Conventional gingivectomy for chronic gingival enlargement in orthodontic treatment: a case report

Odonto : Dental Journal

Background: Gingival enlargement, also known as gingival overgrowth, is an enlargement of the gum tissue. There are many possible causes for enlarged gums. Gingival enlargement is general feature of gingival diseases. It is common note to chronic inflammatory gingival enlargement was caused by poor of oral hygiene. Orthodontic braces can interfere with good oral hygiene, contributing to the development of the inflammatory process. One of the most common soft tissue problems related to fixed orthodontic appliances is gingival hypertrophy or hyperplasia. Maintaining oral hygiene is hindered in cases of gingival hypertrophy due to orthodontic appliances. The most widely used surgical method to treat gingival hypertrophy is gingivectomy. Case Report : A 27-year-old patient was referred to the periodontal clinic of Airlangga University Dental Hospital because of primary gingival swelling with gingival bleeding during brushing in the anterior mandibular region. On intra oral examination s...

An Overview of Gingival and Periodontal Diseases in 12 to 15 years using Gingivitis and Periodontitis Site Prevalence Index (WHO, 1978)

World Journal of Dentistry, 2011

The aim of the study was to overview the gingival and periodontal disease in children and adolescents aged 12 to 15 years in Belgaum city. Visible plaque, gingival bleeding, supragingival and subgingival calculus and periodontal pockets were measured. Examination of buccal, lingual and mesial areas of each tooth was recorded sequentially in both arches using Gingivitis and Periodontitis Site Prevalence Index (WHO, 1978). The prevalence of gingival and periodontal disease was more in males than females and in Hindu population compared to others. The sites affected by gingivitis and periodontitis increased with the age. Periodontal problems were significantly more prevalent in patients with betel nut chewing habit. Visible plaque was most common while periodontal pockets were least common in the adolescents. Age, socioeconomic status, brushing habits and brushing frequency did not affect much to the prevalence of sites of gingivitis and periodontal disease. It was concluded that early...

3-YEAR Longitudinal Study of the Periodontal Status of an Adult Population with Gingivitis

Journal of Clinical Periodontology, 1985

69 adults ranging in age from 20 to 73 (mean age: 37) were randomly assigned to a control (C) and a test (T) group. Of these, 61 completed the 3-year longitudinal study. All subjects had varying degrees of gingivitis at the start, but no overt periodontitis. Following a base line examination for PII, GI, probing depth (PD) and recession, a differential darkfield microscopic (DDFM) count of subgingival bacterial morphotypes was carried out on a pooled sample originating from one tooth surface in each sextant with the greatest probing depth. Examinations were repeated every 5 months for 3 years. The C group received regular prophylaxes every 6 months. The Tstibjects received prophylaxes according to a previously described schedule, and on the basis of the DDFM test outcome. Recall intervals at the end of the study for the T group ranged from 1 to 24 months (mean: 15.7 months). Of 30 subjects in the T group at the end of the study, one half had not had their teeth cleaned for periods of 18 to 36 months without any detectable deterioration in their periodonta! status by comparison with the other T subjects or the patients in the C group. Both C and T subjects exhibited increased mean PII and GI scores as compared to base line during the first half of the study. However, mean PD measurements remained unchanged. Increases in PD from base line of 3 mm or more were observed only in approximately I out of a 1000 individual tooth surface comparisons, a frequency comparable to that expected to occur by chance alone. This observation indicates that in this population, little if any pocket formation occurred during the study period. GI score increases of 2 units or more occurred in relatively few subjects. 2 of 31 C patients accounted for 42"!!? of the affected dental units, while 5 out of 30 T subjects accounted for 40.8 % of the affected dental units in that group. These observations suggest that despite the relatively high prevalence and incidence of gingivitis, the subjects were relatively resistant to periodontitis. Neither preventive schedule was effective in eliminating gingivitis. The lack of significant destructive disease in this population prevented any meaningful comparison of the relative effectiveness of the two preventive maintenance regimens in preventing recurrences of periodontitis. Studies have been carried out by ourselves and iti adult periodontitis toward those seen in others which have demostrated sigtiificatit dif
