Thesis - A PROGRAM PROPOSAL FOR DEVELOPING STUDENT-ATHLETES THROUGH THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ATHLETICS AND HIGHER EDUCATION

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Kern County public high school student-athletes are an underdeveloped population in California. They need an efficient transition process that is concentrated on gaining access to postsecondary education opportunities through sport participation. The proposed program aims to encourage student-athletes to focus on education for life after sports while staying motivated on high school athletics to gain college entrance and the benefits that sports participation can offer. The proposal will provided a few areas of concentration for Kern High School District (KHSD) to consider. The areas include the collaborated efforts form athletes, coaches and parents; social influences of student-athletes in high school; and fostering the correlation of athletic participation and academic success. The research has identified that each of these areas has been studied and serves as an important part of student-athlete success in high school to college transition. Through analysis it is recommended that KHSD implement a student-athlete development program. Further, the program will be unique to each high school, and standards will be made for increasing graduation and proficiency rates, and a collective effort from the “athletic triangle” will increase student-athlete postsecondary entrance. The goals and objectives will be set from the previous years results. Feedback from all public high schools will be circulated around the district to create a more comprehensive program.

Student-Athlete Wellbeing and Persistence: An In-depth Look at Student-Athlete Perceptions

Journal for the Study of Sports and Athletes in Education, 2013

This study investigated student-athlete perceptions of wellbeing, delimited to satisfaction regarding Athletic Department Policies and Practices, Educational Characteristics, Institutional Facilities and Services, and intent to academically persist. The study employed quantitative and qualitative data queries. Exploring the Impacts of Student-Athletes Achievement Goal and Motivation for Sports Participation towards Successful Performance in Sports Competition

International Journal of Human Movement and Sports Sciences, 2024

Successful performance in sports competition is determined by a lot of factors. Understanding the intricate relationship of these factors may guide coaches and sports managers to enhance the performance of student-athletes. The study aimed to investigate the achievement goal, and motivation for sports participation and its relationship to student-athletes performance in sports competition. This descriptive research includes 107 student-athletes in secondary schools that answered the “Achievement Goal Questionnaire for Sports” [1] and “Motivation for Sports Participation” [2] instrument. Descriptive statistics were utilized to describe the student-athletes’ achievement goal, and motivation to sports participation and performance rank while Pearson r correlation analysis was computed to test the significant relationship among these variables. Results revealed that student-athletes strongly agree that task-approach, task-avoidance, self-approach, self-avoidance, other-approach and other avoidance goals were the achievement goals utilized in sports competition. As to motivation, student-athletes agree that availability of facilities, skills development, psychological boost and recognition necessitate participation in sports competition. Results revealed a significant relationship exists between achievement goal such as task-approach, self-approach and other-avoidance approach goal towards student-athletes performance. Furthermore, motivation to sports participation in terms of availability of facilities, skill development, psychological boost and recognition was also found to have a significant relationship with student-athletes performance in sports competition.

Factors Related to the Competition Success of Student-Athletes towards a Framework for Successful Performance

International Journal of Human Movement and Sports Sciences, 2023

There are many factors affecting the sports performance of student-athletes. Describing the association of these factors with their sports performance may help sports administrators and coaches understand studentathletes' needs which could lead to successful sports performance. The study aimed to identify the significant relationship between the profile and sports performance of student-athletes and the subsequent factors: personal factor, psychological factor, coaching factor, academic factor, administrative factor, and health factor. This descriptive correlation research involved 30 male and 40 female student-athletes who answered a modified questionnaire on Factors Affecting Student-Athletes in their Sports Performance. Descriptive statistics including frequency distribution and percentage were used to describe studentathletes' profiles, sports performance, and factors. Also, Pearson r correlation analysis was computed to test the significant relationship of the profile, factors, and sports performance. Results indicated that student-athletes strongly agree that all the factors affect their sports performance, especially personal factor, coaching factor, and psychological factor. Additionally, student-athletes agree that health factor and academic factor affect their sports performance. Furthermore, results also show that student-athletes' profile was not associated with their performance rank. Meanwhile, all factors except academic factor were significantly related to sports performance. Furthermore, based on the findings, a framework for the successful performance of student-athletes was designed, emphasizing more importance on personal factors and administrative factors while also showing the other factors supporting the athlete's development in terms of training and competition. The model framework could be a viable tool to guide sports administrators and coaches on the successful sports performance of student-athletes.

Qualitative Research in Sport, Exercise and Health A qualitative synthesis of research into social motivational influences across the athletic career span PLEASE SCROLL DOWN FOR ARTICLE

This study represents a qualitative synthesis of research examining the socio-environmental influences of coaches, parents and peers on athlete motivation, across the athletic career-span. Using a critical-realist perspective, meta-interpretation methodology was deployed to search and analyse the literature. On-going, iterative analysis generated new areas of enquiry and new search terms, until the emerging analysis reached the points of saturation. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were developed during this process to produce a clear statement of applicability for the study. In the final analysis, a developmental structure was specified to describe the athletic career trajectory, together with a horizontal structure capturing seven domains of the motivational atmosphere surrounding athletes (competition, training, evaluation, emotion, authority, social-support, and relatedness), and a vertical structure varying in terms of level-of-abstraction: The global/ broad 'motivational atmosphere' containing contextual 'climates', built from immediate/situational 'motivational conditions'. A model of the overall 'motivational atmosphere' in sport, based on a meteorological analogy, is offered with a view to stimulating critical debate and new research directions that reflect the complexity of interpersonal motivation in sport.
