Academic Stress and coping Strategies of Filipino College Students in private and public universities in Central Luzon

This study explored the academic stress and coping mechanisms of three hundred eighty-two (382) college students from public and private universities in Central Luzon, Philippines using descriptive research design. Results showed that major contributors to the respondents' stress were from teachers, completion of requirements and peers who commit cheating. They felt academically stressed and experience sleeping problems low self-confidence and moodiness. Respondents coped with stress through spirituality, one of the prominent traits of Filipinos. The study highlights the need to comply with the mental health protocol and to create avenues to attain well-being for students with varying interests.

The causes, levels of stress, and coping mechanisms vary. The study of Bachelor of Elementary Education course is basically a rigorous one as it is designed to prepare students for the actual demands in the world of work, specifically the elementary school classroom. This study sought to determine the causes of stress, the effects of stress, and the stress coping mechanisms of Bachelor of Elementary Education students in the Leyte Normal University, Tacloban City. This is a replication study. It tested some assumptions using the descriptive survey method with 316 respondents. Recitations and practicum/demonstration were the most common stressors. Disparity was observed in the causes of stress for the male and female students. Stressors and Stress Responses of Filipino College Students

The study determined the stressors and stress responses of Filipino college students in relation to sex, course, and academic classification. There were 258 respondents for the study. Of the respondents, 68% were females and 32% were males. According to their degree, 42% belonged to the soft sciences and 58% to the hard sciences. In terms of academic classification, 10% were freshmen, 36% sophomores, 33% juniors, and 21% seniors. The top five overall stressors of the respondents were academic difficulty of subject matter, workload due to subjects, time management because of subjects, responsibilities due to being on one's own, and time management because of both subjects and organizations. The most frequently occurring stress responses were affective stress responses followed by cognitive responses. For both male and female respondents, the top stressors were academics, workload due to subjects, and time management concerns. Overall, the males reacted to stress through affective responses and females through cognitive responses. Students enrolled in the hard and soft sciences both considered academics, workload due to subjects, and time management concerns as their top stressors. Those in the soft sciences reacted with cognitive stress responses while those in the hard sciences reacted with affective stress responses. Generally, all students, regardless of their academic classification pointed out that academics, workload due to subjects, and time management were their main stressors. They all reacted to stress with affective stress responses. These patterns can be monitored to maintain the psychological and physical well-being of adolescent students. Further studies can consider bigger samples in various universities and other socio-demographic variables which are related to stress perceptions.

THE EFFECTS OF SOCIO-ECONOMIC BACKGROUND AND COPING MECHANISMS OF THE PARENTS ON THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF STUDENTS IN LOS BANOS

This study aimed to investigate the effects of parent's socio-economic status and the coping mechanisms of parents on the academic performance of students in Los Baňos. The researchers conducted a face-to-face interview to one hundred (100) respondents, fifty (50) parents and fifty (50) students' from selected Barangays in Los Banos, specifically, Brgy. Bambang, Bayog, Malinta, Mayondon, San Antonio and Tadlac. It shows that having a low socio-economic status makes every parent respondent to think of another way of living to get money for the educational needs for their children. Socio-economic status is an economic and sociological combined total measure of a person's work experience and of an individuals or family economic and social position in relation to others, based on income, education, and occupation. Coping mechanism is an adaptation to environmental stress that is based on conscious or unconscious choice and that enhances control over behavior or gives psychological comfort. Academic performance the extent to which a student, teacher or institution has achieved their educational goals. Base on the findings of the study, it shows that majority of the respondents stated that their monthly income was not enough to support their children's educational needs. That's why most of the respondents tend to borrow money or " pangungutang " from their relatives, with sixty-two percent (62%). And lastly, almost half of the respondents answered that they pursue their study just to have a better life on the future despite of poverty they encounter with forty-six percent (46%).

School, Home, Personal and Mental Health- Related Issues of Senior High Students in a Catholic School in the Philippines

Being mentally healthy is one of the best feelings in the world. Just knowing that you are not under any kind of stress is already a breath of fresh air. Every student goes through a very stressful time of their lives every time another academic year starts. A student's mental health is often frowned upon because adults say that all they do is sit around all day listening to their lectures. But in all honesty, being mentally tired is the worst feeling in the world. The purpose of this study is to provide an assessment of mental health issues and academic performance of senior high school students. The researcher used a survey-questionnaire on a five-point Likert scale that has been modified and adapted from several authorities in the field of Educational Psychology. The study shows that senior high school students have a positive mental health assessment in school, home, personal and health. Some inconsistencies in their response to the mental health assessment in school may be attributed to the needed enhancement of their difficulty in math and other major subjects. Thus, it is recommended that the curriculum must be enhanced, particularly that of the math and other minor subjects so that it will abreast to the interest of the students without sacrificing the curriculum prescribed by DepEd. Moreover, to re-visit the teaching strategies that will encourage students to enjoy learning.

Relationship of Academic Stress with Coping Strategies of Adolescents

This study was undertaken to examine the different Coping Strategies used by adolescents in relation to their Academic stress. For this purpose, online interview schedule was distributed among 50 respondents (higher secondary students). The researcher has used five-point Likert scale method for measurement. The data has been collected through the questionnaire as Assessment of Academic Stress (ASS): By Sreenivas and Kumar (1999) and Assessment of Coping Strategies Styles (ACS): By By Sreenivas and Kumar (1999), which was later evaluated by using SPSS 26 (Statistical Package for Social Science). Quantitative data was tested using descriptive analysis: "t" test, Mean and SD were applied to fulfil the objectives of this study.by the findings it revealed that there is significant difference Coping Strategies in Adolescents as 08 boys has Emotional Focused and 17 boys has Problem focused coping strategies whereas 12 girls have emotional focused and 13 girls has problem focused coping strategies. Also it resulted that there is no significant difference Academic Stress in Adolescents (t-value is 1.710. the p-value is 0.046903, p<0.05). And there is significant difference in coping strategies and academic stress of adolescents. In relation to gender more girls having slight stress use problem focused strategies. In contrasts both in slight stress and moderate stress more number of boys use problem focused coping strategies in comparison to emotion focused coping strategies.

Stress on students is more common and varied. Therefore, a good coping strategy is needed in order to control stress and increase academic achievement. The purposes of this study are: 1) to describe the level of academic stress and coping strategy; 2) to investigate the effect of the differences of gender, age, marital status, years of study and degrees on academic stress and coping; and 3) to analyze the relationship between academic stress, coping and academic achievement. ORIGINAL ARTICLE STRESS, STRESSORS AND COPING STRATEGIES AMONG SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN A MALAYSIAN GOVERNMENT SECONDARY SCHOOL: INITIAL FINDINGS

In the process of growing, adolescents experience stress either good or bad depending on how they cope. School training further adds to this stressful situation. It is noteworthy that persistent over stress will impair students' academic achievement, personal and professional development. This preliminary study is meant to obtain initial data on the stress prevalence, stressors, and coping strategies among secondary school children in Malaysia. Data gained from this preliminary study provides valuable data for subsequence research in the future. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study involving 100 secondary school students from a Malaysian government secondary school. The validated Malay version 12-item General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12), Soalselidik Stressor Sekolah Menengah (SSSM) and Malay version of Brief COPE were used to identify stress level, stressors, and coping strategies. Results: A number of 90 (90%) students participated in this study. The prevalence of stress among secondary school students was 26.1%. It was found that the main stressors were related to academic. The top five coping strategies were religion, positive reinterpretation, active coping, planning, and use of instrumental support. Conclusion: The prevalence of stress among secondary school students in a Malaysian government school was high. Academic related problems were the major stressor among the students. The most frequent coping strategies being used by the students were positive coping strategies.

Academic Stress, Coping and Social Cultural Adaptation of Psychological Well Being among Indonesian Postgraduate Students

This article explores the various dimensions of academic stress factors, coping, and social-cultural adaptation on psychological well-being of 150 Indonesian postgraduate students. The study implemented a correlational research design whereby a conceptual model was produced, which correlated both the dependent and independent variables. Data analysis was performed using SPSS and SmartPLS (Partial Least Squares). The scientific novelty includes the conceptualization of academic stress, coping, social-cultural adaptation, and psychological well-being among Indonesian postgraduate students; thus, results may differ from previous findings, while contributing an in-depth knowledge in this area.
