Relationship of Parenting Styles with Decision-Making and Self-concept among Adolescents

Objectives. The current research aimed to examines the relationship of parenting styles with decision-making and self-concept among adolescents (N=400). Method. The sample comprised of College students from Rawalpindi and Attock including both government and private colleges. There were 200 male and 200 female college students recruited into present study. Data were collected through the Parental Authority Questionnaire (Buri, 1989), Self-Concept Questionnaire (Robson, 1989), and Melbourne Decision Making Questionnaire (Mann et al., 1997). Results. Self-concept has significant negative correlation with authoritarian father, authoritarian mother, permissive father, permissive mother, whereas significant positive correlation with authoritative father and authoritative mother Decision making style is also significantly correlated with parenting styles. The findings revealed that gender moderates the relationship between authoritarian parenting styles and hypervigilance as well as procrastination. Moreover, gender also moderates the relationship between authoritarian parenting and self-concept. Conclusion. Study demonstrate that parenting styles play a distinctive role especially authoritarian parenting style to determine the adaptive decision making and firm self-concept among adolescents.

Impact of parents’ authoritative style on personality traits of children: a case study of Elementary class students in Pakistan

The study was carried out to determine the effects of authoritative parenthood on the personality traits of elementary school children including all the five traits namely agreeableness, conscientiousness, extraversion, neuroticism and openness. The study is significant as it gives parents a chance to evaluate their parenting style and comprehend its positive and negative effects on children’ personality traits. It was an Ex Post Facto study in which data was collected about the cases of elementary class children in Pakistan. A multistage random sample of 30 elementary schools, three hundred cases (children and their parents) and 90 teachers was chosen. Parenting Style as a Cognitive Factor in Developing Big-Five Personality Traits among Youth: A Study of Public University in Multan, Pakistan

The present study aimed to investigate the relationship between parenting styles (authoritarian, authoritative and permissive) and Big-five personality traits (extraversion, agreeableness, neuroticism, conscientiousness and openness) among the students of Bahauddin Zakariya University Multan, Pakistan. For this purpose, a total number of 281 students from different faculties (Natural and social sciences) were selected through systematic sampling technique and the respondents responded to parenting authority questionnaire (PAQ) by Buri (1991) and Big-five inventory (BFI) john and Srivastava (1999). Data were analyzed by using SPSS-21 version, and Pearson correlation (r=0.01) was applied to find out the relationship, direction and consistency between predictor and criterion variable. Results indicated a directly proportional relationship between parenting styles (authoritarian, authoritative & permissive) and big five personality traits.

Study to determine the relationship between parenting style and adolescent self-esteem

Introduction: Parents are the basic sculptors of their child’s future. There are three basic types of parenting styles - Authoritarian, Authoritative and permissive, and each parenting style has different bearing on child’s nature and self-esteem. A high level of self-esteem comes handy when life goes badly so that one treats himself with tolerance and understanding at tough times of life. Materials and Methods: This study was conducted on the adolescents and their parents attending the adolescent health clinic in a tertiary medical care hospital for various problems . Adolescents were interviewed using the Rosenberg questionnaire and their parents were interviewed using the Parenting styles and dimensions questionnaire and demographic data were collected. Effectiveness of Parenting Styles on Personality Traits of Children at Secondary Level

Parenting style is basically a psychological term that leads us to the approaches that were used by the parents to bring up their children's in their childhood. The main focus of the study was to explore the effectiveness of parenting styles on the personality of children at the secondary level. Objectives of the study were to explore the effectiveness of parenting styles on the personality of children at the secondary level and to recommend proposed parenting styles for the development of student's personality of children at the secondary level. This study followed a mixed method in nature and followed survey design. All the children of class 10 and their parents were the population of the study from the government and private schools of Faisalabad city. It is highly recommended that parents may be provided awareness session to now the importance of their parenting styles and their impact on the personality traits of their children. It is recommended that the government may provide funds and also provide technical facilities. More researches may be conducted on the subject cited above. Curriculum agencies may develop a curriculum on the subject so everybody may have an idea about parenting style also.

04-07 Role of parenting on personality development of children

Parenting is the process of caring and supporting the mental, social, physical, psychological and intellectual development of children from period of infancy to adulthood. Research investigating association between parenting styles and personality development of children are limited in India especially in Bihar. This paper aims to studies conducted in Bihar, to find out the role of parenting styles and its outcome on personality development of the children. Present study found that the parenting styles had great impact on personality development of children. An Authoritative parenting styles was associated with better academic performance of the children than authoritarian, uninvolved and Permissive/Indulgent parenting. Study also found that the behavior of the children in class room was not associated with the parenting style. The significant association was observed in personality development and parenting style.

The Effect of Parenting Styles on Personality: A Review of Literature

The influence of parents on childs development is extremely important. The impact a parent and family has on an individual is the foremost indicator of the holistic personality of that individual. Several researches are evident to the aspect that parental styles are very crucial factor that influences an adolescents behaviour, also the academic success besides other factors. Literature accords that based on Baumrinds model of Parenting Styles, authoritative parenting style is the most efficient in enhancing the academic achievement. Also that Permissive and neglectful parenting styles are the indicator styles for the abuse of alcohol among the adolescents and young adults. Thus the scope of this literature review is to filter out the significant factors influencing an individuals personality by assessing the aspects of academic achievement and alcohol use in accordance to parenting styles.

Relationship Between Perceived Parenting Style and Emotional Regulation Ability Among Indian Young Adults

Early human development is important for psychological and psychosocial growth. Parental practices include parents' behaviors and communication patterns with their children, which have short-and long-term effects on their children's social functioning in areas such as morality, social development, psychological development, peer play, and academic achievement. This study aims to assess the relationship between perceived parental style and emotional regulation abilities among Indian young adults. Following purposive sampling, data was collected from two hundred and fifteen young adults in India. The findings show cognitive reappraisal and emotional regulation have a significant positive relationship with permissive and authoritative parenting. Cognitive appraisal shares no significant relationship with authoritarian parenting. Excessive suppression did not share a significant relationship with any of the parental styles.
