Collaborative production, associated with terms such as co-creation and crowdsourcing, are buzzwords in both innovation practices in industry, as well as in the study of innovation. The notions of user-centric innovation and open innovation have been widely studied in management science by scholars such as Eric von Hippel, Yochai Benkler, and Henry Chesbrough in the contexts of open source software production, open business models, and knowledge creation. This edited volume, New Forms of Collaborative Innovation and Production on the Internet: An Interdisciplinary Perspective, provides a timely and useful overview to co-production in innovation processes in companies, and in knowledge co-creation on sites such as Wikipedia. The book sheds light on co-production from several perspectives, with the foci of inquiry ranging from motivating factors for participation, to trust and reputation in online interactions, and management of online communities. The common denominator is the customer’s active role, or, rather the “prosumer’s”, the term used to describe the hybrid combination of the roles of a consumer and producer that comes with collaborative production. This volume examines the user within a networked web of decentralized, voluntary co-production of goods, services, and knowledge.

The movement toward this economy of “sharing” translates into market efficiencies that bear new products, reframe established services, have positive environmental effects, and may generate overall economic growth. This emerging paradigm, entitled the collaborative economy, is disruptive to the conventional company-driven economic paradigm as evidenced by the large number of peer-to-peer based services that have captured impressive market shares sectors ranging from transportation and hospitality to banking and risk capital. The panel explores economic, social, and technological implications of the collaborative economy, how digital technologies enable it, and how the massive sociotechnical systems embodied in these new peer platforms may evolve in response to the market and social forces that drive this emerging ecosystem.
Collaborative Networks: A Pillar of Digital Transformation

The notion of digital transformation encompasses the adoption and integration of a variety of new information and communication technologies for the development of more efficient, flexible, agile, and sustainable solutions for industrial systems. Besides technology, this process also involves new organizational forms and leads to new business models. As such, this work addresses the contribution of collaborative networks to such a transformation. An analysis of the collaborative aspects required in the various dimensions of the 4th industrial revolution is conducted based on a literature survey and experiences gained from several research projects. A mapping between the identified collaboration needs and research results that can be adopted from the collaborative networks area is presented. Furthermore, several new research challenges are identified and briefly characterized.

Collaborative networks show a high potential as drivers of value creation. The materialization of this potential however requires further progress in understanding these organizational forms and the underlying principles of this new paradigm. As a contribution in this direction, the notion of collaboration among organizations is clarified, a taxonomy of collaborative networks is proposed, and the basic elements of value creation are discussed, in the context of a holistic approach to collaborative networks.
Collaborative peer production as an alternative to hierarchical internet based business systems

As we move towards more data intensive, devicecentric global communication networks, our ability to usefully harvest these large datastores is degrading. The widening asym-metry in the explosive growth of data versus our ability to use it, is forcing us towards centralized analytics. This splintered concentration of data further consolidates analytical capabilities in the hands of the few and divides the network into the analysors and the analysed. The fracturing of the system into opaque datastores and analytics blocks creates a strong positive feedback loop and has a significant negative impact on the stability, transparency and freedom of the network. This paper attempted toidentify problems associated with the internet, internet dependent business models and reviewing available solutions and discuss possible solutions which became necessary.

The fourth industrial revolution triggered by interned development provides opportunities for development of a digitalized industry, “Industry 4.0”, which make the manufacturing industry, call for development of intelligent manufacturing. B2B innovation ecosystems of digital platforms have emerged to meet the demands of firms to enhance their innovation capacity through networking in the global knowledge economy. The purpose of this paper is to explore collaboration challenges and mechanisms for reaching value creation in the context of key actors’ development of a B2B digital platform ecosystem for fostering open innovation in the manufacturing industry. The paper addresses collaboration challenges key partners face in the development of B2B digital platform ecosystems in early phases.
