This paper presents the results of research on contextualization efforts made by Islamic boarding school (pesantren) in learning religious texts (kitab) in West Sumatra. It is important to see the efforts of the Islamic boarding school related to the relevance between learning kitab and religious issues that arise in the present time. This research was done in two different shades of Islamic boarding schools in terms of their development history. Data were collected through textual analysis, interviews and observation. The results shows that pesantren maintained and made some progress to its activity of learning kitab, regarding their materials and their learning methods. Besides old method, which is reading kitab in class, Islamic boarding schools are implementing the other two methods, namely discussing and writing papers.
