Shared Visions and local sustainability: Territory perspectives under Strategic Design lenses
Strategic Design Research Journal, 2011
This study is part of a model of analysis conceived under Strategic Design lenses on mental images with focus on collaborative natured territories in which internal and external actors observed -Aveiro (Portugal) -grouped according to their experiences in the place express their visions by means of a participative process. It aims at producing indicators -shared visionsfor further application in territorial valorization projects' bound to enhance local sustainability. The study main focus is design as a product and metadesign research is treated as an approach for transdisciplinary work.
This project aims to present an initiative for cultural and territorial recovery through design, which is in project implementation with the Politecnico di Torino, Course of Study in Design, and Minas Gerais State University-UEMG, through the Centre for Studies, Theory, Culture and Design Research, School of Design, in a action of CMD – " Centro Minas Design " (Minas Design Center). The project involves students from two universities, using resources and tools for training at distance between the regions of Minas Gerais-Brazil and Piedmont. The main focus of research is to apply the design to enhance cultural assets and land, promoting the interaction between both institutions and students of Industrial Design at first level, which will relate to each other in design and culture. The territorial and cultural assets presented here are the Estrada Real (" Royal Road "), a road built by the Portuguese during the colonial rule, with the purpose of connecting the diamond and gold mines to the sea, with a course of 1600km (994 miles) across three regions (Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo). The project focuses on the link territory-sustainable development-design, specifically within the territory of Minas Gerais, which could provide an original contribution to the various actions already affecting the today's interest of Estrada Real. The Project is considered an experimental model for the development and enhancement of cultural and territorial, especially marketing-territorial confrontation, based primarily on the tourism and economic development potential, which is estimated by the Government of Minas Gerais to be 1.25 billion dollars and 2.5 million tourists/year. The study will also include training activities and a cultural project available not only for Brazilians but also for the Italian and Brazilian communities. Students and tutors/teachers will be involved in an action-oriented design to support the sustainability for territorial marketing in certain specified places of interest along the territory contained in the Estrada Real, within the State of Minas Gerais. The main expected results are: a) applying the perspective of design to improve the territory, through the development of research and analysis of elements of identity; b) the development of product designs and services based on the territory resources and sustainable profile development; c) the exchange of knowledge and experience, through the interaction between the institutions involved in the project.

The project is considered an experimental model for the development and cultural and territorial enhancement, based primarily in the tourism and economic development potential, which is estimated by the Government of Minas Gerais to be 1.25 billion dollars and 2.5 million tourists/ year in 2010. The study will include training activities and a cultural project involving Brazilians and Italians communities. The main expected results are: (a) applying the perspective of design to improve the territorial competitiveness, through the development of research and analysis of elements of identity; (b) the development of product design and services based on the territory resources and sustainable development; (c) the exchange of knowledge and experience, through the interaction between the institutions.
Design Strategies for Socio-Environmentally Adverse Territories
AHFE 2022 Human Dynamics and Design for the Development of Contemporary Societies,, 2022
In an inland southern region of Portugal, pathologies that intersect social and environmental problems have been identified, such as low density, aged and dispersed population, as well as low rainfall and high temperatures. An applied research and development initiative endorsing those problems was carried out by students and staff of the University of Lisbon along two years. This text reflects on this experience and the role of design on such predicaments. The research questions are: how and what kind of innovation can design bring to the community's quality of life in territories under adverse conditions of that kind? A previous analysis, carried out between local authorities and our design school, allowed us to trace two lines of investigation, one aimed at intensifying the flow of people within the territory, and the other focused on promoting the relationship between Man and his environment. Considering that design can contribute to the process of social change, through design for social innovation and collaborative services, we reflect on the main characteristics that the design projects must contemplate, which are: a usercentered perspective; be a participatory process; to draft with a sustainability perspective; adopt a multilevel perspective; to endorse innovation; and sustain problem solving. The research methodology involves the transversal use of design methods and participatory processes, immersion in the territory, collection of primary and secondary data, definition of the concept, development of proposals, communication, and validation by the municipal authorities. The results are a set of projects with a wide range of solutions in the field of social innovation, with the aim of valuing social interaction, valuing culture and regenerating the local landscape, namely: a cultural caravan service; a Lab-desk service; a cultural project to reactivate community wood-fired bread ovens; a website to publicize local projects focused on agroecological food; a Center for the Intangible Cultural Heritage; a co-working and co-living service; an environmental festival; a research service aimed at better understanding the needs of the "silent population"; a garden at the historic urban center of Mértola town; a public botanical garden; and, the renovation of a public area in a small village. The relevance of this work lies in the assertion of the potential of design strategies for social innovation, particularly in a context of social and environmental adversity, where design can fulfill a key role valuing the daily lives of populations. This article demonstrates that there is an immense space for work involving the public institutions managing this type of territories and the design academia. From our experience, a transversal line stands out: the intersection between local knowledge and the external population. This converges it the idea that the value that design brings to this kind of community is the drafting of arenas of social interaction where the local social fabric is nurtured and, simultaneously, beholding people's awareness of the surrounding environment's frailty.
Design Ecovisions 2. Research on design and sustainability in Brazil.
Edgard Blücher Ltda, 2021
DESIGN ECOVISIONS – Volume 2: Research on design and sustainability in Brazil presents the results of the panel discussions of the 6º Simpósio Brasileiro de Design Sustentável + International Symposium on Sustainable Design (SBDS+ ISSD 2017), held in 2017 in Belo Horizonte. The event aimed at gathering researchers, students and design professionals, as well as representatives of the productive and governmental sectors, who seek to discuss the current and future framework of design in relation to various aspects of sustainable development. It was based on dynamics for exchange, sharing, and collaboration among design researchers engaged with sustainability, previously experienced in the 5th edition of the symposium, held in 2015 in Rio de Janeiro, and which results were recorded in the first volume of this series. The theme of Volume 2 is the tripod of sustainability, and it is addressed by reflecting on “design, territory and culture”; “social innovation and collaborative models”; “ecomaterials”; “environmental labelling”; “design and craftsmanship”; and “circular economy”. The chapters reflect the researchers’ contributions and their discussions, and are organized in three parts. The first encompasses design in the context of sustainable consumption and production, focusing on materials and environmental labelling. The second seeks to discuss design and emerging approaches through the concepts of local production, territory and collaborative models. The third part consists of reports of experiences from the event or from design practice. Thus, combining theory and practice, this book seeks to materialize the meeting as a relevant event for the area, and a fruitful space for debates on the theme of sustainability allied to design in Brazil.
The study presented here aims to demonstrate the advances of the in eri Project: Design and Competitive Integration in the Estrada Real Territory (PER), in the context of material, immaterial and historical culture, in a route corresponding to eight cities of the Estrada Real (ER) in the region of Minas Gerais - Brazil. Through the research partnership between the School of Design of the UEMG and Politecnico di Torino, we saw the need, continuing as a second phase of this project, to de ne e ective actions, throughout the breadth and scope of design, which should be able to articulate and enhance the development of the territory in question, having as basis the increase in value of the local identity and culture, in pursuit of socioeconomic and environmental balance. This research in- volves the opportune participation of students and teachers from both Athenaeums, in a design action that also includes the insertion and distribution of territorial marketing in the Estrada Real through the following pilot localities: São Brás do Suaçuí, Entre Rios de Minas, Casa Grande, Lagoa Dourada, Resende Costa, Coronel Xavier Chaves, Pratos and Bichinho. Actions aimed at the increase in value of local products and services have been established through the recognition of the territorial potential and skills, as well as through the commu- nication relationship between these means and the investiga- ted context, in order to strengthen and propose new systems of production and services that respect the regional vocation and establish creative and innovative cooperation networks of sustainable emphasis. In this second phase of the research, we show the results of the project alternatives that were gene- rated, analyzed, improved and developed by the Italian-Brazi- lian work team (POLITO-UEMG), in which we prospect possi- ble project issues, such as: information networks, sustainable handicrafts, local nature, typography with regional icons, mapping of local cultural events, merchandising products for hotels and restaurants, local music and melodies (ER Net, Eco-art Zoo, Zoom in on Nature, (Re)Write, Calendar, Info-tools for food and table, Book of Musical Traditions). We emphasize that all concepts to be developed focus on the interface “ter- ritory, sustainability and design” and seek to contribute, in an original and innovative way, with the many actions inherent to the Estrada Real territory. Key words: design and local increase in value, territorial cultu- re, meta-project and eco-museum, sustainable development.
Local Design and Development: A Space for Coordination between Design, Craft and Territory
The creation of the Centro Metropolitano de Diseño (Design Metropolitan Center) was the resolution emerging from a strategy and a methodological search which allowed to contact the design and its main actors with the new context phenomena which appeared by the end of the '90s in Argentina, such as the social crisis, unemployment, the devaluation and subsequent revaluation of national production, the industry collapse and recovery, the exponential growth in the number of design professionals, the emergence of new entrepreneurs, etcetera. Several experiences, programs and activities have been developed during the 10 years of this institution and, perhaps, the greatest contribution has been to clearly propose an agenda linking design activities to local development strategies in the City of Buenos Aires, through a systemic model which covered each of its initiatives. Hence, recurrent and many times irreductible conflicts concerning apparently antagonistic positions, which are usually frequent in academic and professional debates of the Latin American design world, were channeled from practices exceeding reductionisms and diving into the complexity brought by the work with multiple actors who are part of a project settled in the territory. This work explores, based on one of the projects carried out by the CMD and other particular experiences still in progress, the outstanding aspects observed in a process of mutual transfer between craftsmen and designers located in different territories: one being an urban and compact territory, and the other being the vast puna of the Argentine Northwest. Likewise, it intends to mention the multiplicity of actors and factors operating in the design-craft relation as part of a local development system, which contains and conditions it. Finally, some methodological recommendations are proposed to advance in the design of programs which allow to articulate these two universes.
Doctoral studies facing valorisation of territory Design as a cross-functional manager of its values
To identify, enhance and promote the system of values of a given territory through De-sign certainly affirms the need for a new framework of research, that which proposes itself to interact according to a multidisciplinary platform, where complex, dynamic, and perhaps unstable in their perfection, variables operate, giving sense to the real nature of the territory. Design, as manager in this process, besides framing itself into a new territory of re-search, also points the need for a methodological and disciplinary, strategic and metaprojectual repositioning, capable of positively simplifying the complexity of the ter-ritory and transforming it into a reality that is useful to the reconstruction or reorganiza-tion of its values. Applied to Guimarães' territory, future European Capital of Culture in 2012, the current research aims to promote territorial values, as well as the underlying biodiversity of the territory, visible also in the complexity of its places, which, as a whole...
