This research explored the translation of the Urdu poem "Jawab-e-Shikwa" by Muhammad Iqbal into English, focusing on two versions by Altaf Hussain and Frances W. Pritchett. The study employed the Vinay and Darbelnet model to analyze translation strategies such as equivalence, modulation, and oblique translation. The analysis revealed differences in linguistic accuracy, cultural relevance, and literary style between the two translations. Through a qualitative and quantitative approach, the study aimed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the impact of translation on the interpretation of "Jawab-e-Shikwa" in both Urdu and Englishspeaking contexts. From the Result of the analysis it was found that Hussain employed an oblique translation approach with techniques such as equivalence and modulation, capturing the essence of the original poem with a sense-for-sense translation. Pritchett, on the other hand, adopted a direct translation strategy, offering a word-for-word rendition that maintains clarity but may lack the nuanced impact of the Urdu original. Both translations effectively conveyed the overall meaning of the poem, Hussain's version demonstrated a greater adherence to the cultural and literary nuances of the original Urdu, providing a more intricate and contextually rich interpretation. Pritchett's literal approach, while clear and accurate, may compromise the poetic and cultural depth inherent in Iqbal's work.

Intending to identify that how meaning in the source text has been reproduced in the translated text, the study attempts to investigate deforming tendencies used in the selected poems of Abdul Ghani Khan translated from Pashto into English by Imtiaz Ahmed Sahibzada. Imtiaz Sahibzada has translated 141 poems from the mammoth corpus of Abdul Ghani Khan’s Poetry into English and named it The Pilgrim of a Beauty. Using judgmental sampling, ten poems were selected and were analysed in the light of Antoine Berman’s (1965) Text Deformation System which includes twelve deforming tendencies. While analysing the translated text in comparison with the source text, deformation in terms of semantics and the syntactic structure was found. Abdul Ghani Khan’s poetry translation is considerably deformed, and the translator has little maintained the composition, musicality, and structure of the source text because of different reasons. He has deformed the beauty of the source text poems at the cost o...
Theory and practice in poetry translation
2019
The main purpose of this paper is to explore how much knowing the literary translation theories affects the final translations of the translators. Therefore, a group of 100 students of translation studies in Shahid Bahonar University of Kerman were selected for this study, half of them were sophomore students who do not know anything about the literary translation theories and the second half were the senior students who have already passed the literary course and were familiar with the related theories. Furthermore, the English general knowledge of participants were assessed by a placement test, their poetic talents have also been assessed for close investigation of the outcomes, then they were asked to translate two poems namely A red red rose by Robert Burns and Poverty by Ahmad Shamlou translate from English to Persian and vice versa Also, Lefevere's seven strategies of poetry translation have been applied in this study. One of the findings of the research revealed the direct relationship existing between poetic attitude of the participants and their translations. Another finding of this study represents the fact that those participants who were familiar with the poetry translation strategies created better poetic translations than those who were not.
Among translation issues, poetry translation is the most problematic area challenging both translators and authorities in the field of translation studies. Translation of poetry as a yet unanalyzed 'black box' (Francis 2006) has been a much debated issue since olden times, with many pros and cons and dichotomist reasoning as to its possibility or impossibility. This is due to the high cultural prestige of poetry which requires time, effort and ingenuity to translate traditional rhyme, rhythm structures and the figurative language involved. In the present study, a Persian piece of poetry by the contemporary Iranian poet, Musavi Garmaroodi, A. (1984) and its English translation by Vahid, D. H. (2006) will be focused upon and descriptively analyzed at both linguistic and extra linguistic levels.
An Analysis of English Translation of Faiz's Poetry on Textual and Extra-Textual Level
Zenodo (CERN European Organization for Nuclear Research), 2023
The current research intends to investigate the translation of Faiz's poems by Victor G. Kiernan. For this reason, the translation of Faiz's most celebrated poem, "Mujh say pehli si muhabbat mery mehboob na mang" is selected and and textual and extra-textual level comparison and contrast of English translation and the original Urdu poetry is presented in this study. The present study is descriptive research. Vahid's (2008) model is used for analyzing the translated work and making a comparison and contrast. At the text level, sound, form, images, words, content and tone of poem are observed. At the extra-textual level, implicature and coherence are discussed. This model stress on the significance of textual and stylistic analysis. The results prove that English translation of Faiz's poetry does not contain that aesthetic beauty as his real poetry does. Translation of Faiz's poetry is an illusion and has no connection with reality.

The long lyrical poem entitled Gitanjali, Songs of Offerings written by Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941) is very interesting and has a deep philosophical thought. In this occasion, Part LVII is selected to be analysed. This poetry was translated into Indonesian by Amal Hamzah in 1952, which is used as the target language (TL). The approach used is from literary criticism (intrinsic and extrinsic) and from perspective of translation theories. Based on the analysis, obviously, we can see that a single word may have various senses and those are signalled by the context. Especially in poetry, it is enriched by figurative senses. The process of translating poetry absolutely cannot ignore the message of the source language (SL); however, reminding that there is no 100% synonymy between words in every language, the translating process must notice the intrinsic sight of the poem. We cannot judge whether a translation is bad, better or good, especially translation in poetry, particularly the lyrical poem. In this case, some strategies can be conducted such as: translation shifts, lexical translation, idiomatic translation, borrowing, etc., which can be used to naturalize the poetry translation and to achieve the best readability of the TL text.
Application of Eugene Nida's Theory of Translation to the English translation of Surah Ash-Shams
TranscUlturAl: A Journal of Translation Studies and Cultural Studies., 2020
The present study aimed to test the applicability of Nida’s theory of translation to an English translation of surah Ash-Shams of the Holy Qur’an. Towards that general aim, the study provided an overview of Nida’s theory of translation and the aspects whose applicability to the English translation of surah Ash-Shams would be tested. In addition, the study examined the Editor’s Preface to the English translation of the Holy Qur’an from which surah Ash-Shams was selected. A contrastive analysis was also devised and provided to help match the source text with the target text and measure the applicability of Nida’s theory of translation to both texts. The study revealed that, in general, Nida’s theory was applicable with the exception of one aspect related to word order. It is, therefore, recommended that large-scale research be conducted on the applicability of Nida’s theory to an English translation of the whole Holy Qur’an to either confirm the findings of this study or challenge them.
Translation Strategy in Matan Zubad's Translation Book by Muhammad Ali Baraqbah
'A Jamiy: Jurnal Bahasa dan Sastra Arab, 2022
This study aims to describe the translation strategies used in the translated book of Matan Zubad by Muhammad Ali Baraqbah. This book is a translation from Arabic to Indonesian. The original title of this book is Matan Zubad. The theory used in this study is the theory of Mona Baker (2001). This research is a descriptive qualitative research with writing technique. Then analyzed with the translational equivalent method. The data obtained is 82 in the form of words, phrases and sentences from 100 poems studied. There are six strategies used in this book such as translation by a more general word (superordinate), translation by a more neutral/less expressive word, translation by cultural subtitution, Translation using a loan word or loan word plus explanation, translation by paraphrase using a related word, and translation by paraphrase using unrelated word. The word loan and explanation strategies are the most strategies often used by translators. This happens because this translated book comes from a book that studies fiqh where is many fiqh terms cannot be translated literally and must be using borrowing strategy. And because the language text source is a poem which is written using the Ijaz technique where the poem is expressed in a short word but its meaning is deep and broad. This makes the translator have to use description strategiy a lot so that the intent of the poetry can be conveyed and there is no misunderstanding.
Assessing the Translation of Parvin Etesami's Selected Poems Using Vinay and Darbelnet's Model
Journal of Language and Translation, 2019
Translators always seek to find the best equivalents for each word, sentence or phrase in the target language (TL) in order to have the most accurate and meaningful translation of the text. Generally, a trans-lator's main concern is whether to prefer the form over the content or vice versa. In translation studies, literal translation prioritizes the form while free translation concentrates on the content. Literal and free translations are roughly categorized by Vinay and Darbelnet (1995) as direct and oblique translations respectively, overall covering seven concrete procedures. This study aimed to look at the works of Parvin Etesami, a 20 th century Persian poetess, with the intention of analyzing a selection of her poems translated by Alaeddin Pazargadi, professor at the University of Tehran, according to Vinay and Dar-belnet's model in order to identify the strategies and procedures most frequently used by the translator. Every Persian line and its English translation from nine poems of Parvin were analyzed and classified under the relevant taxonomy proposed by Vinay and Darbelnet. By calculating the number of cases of each procedure, it was found that the translator mostly utilized the direct strategy which resembles word for word translation. Finally, some improvements were suggested for some defective cases. This study benefits research on translating literary works.
