Opening Learning Management Systems to personal learning environments

New ICT technologies are continuously introducing changes in the way in which society generates, shares and access information. This is changing what society expects and requires of education. eLearning is acting as a vector of this change, introducing pervasive transformations in and out of the classroom. But with Learning Management Systems (LMS) users have reached a plateau of productivity and stability. At the same time outside the walled garden of the LMS new transformative tools, services and ways of learning are already in use, within the PLE and PLN paradigms. The stability and maturity of the LMS may become yet another resistance factor working against the introduction of innovations. New tools and trends cannot be ignored, and this is the reason why learning platforms should become open and flexible environments. In the course of this article the reasons for this change and how it may be addressed will be discussed, together with a proposal for architecture based on Moodle.
First Steps towards an Integrated Personal Learning Environment at the University Level

Personalization is seen as the key approach to handle the plethora of information in today's knowledge-based society. It is expected that personalized teaching and learning will efficiently address learner needs. The education of the future will change as a result of the influence of Web 2.0 content typified by a steadily increasing supply of data. This means that the students of tomorrow will regularly have to deal with sharing and merging content from different sources.

Abstract: The influence of digital technologies as well as the World Wide Web on education rises dramatically. In former years Learning Management Systems (LMS) were introduced on educational institutes to address the needs both their institutions and their lecturers. Nowadays a shift from an institution-centred approach to a learnercentred one becomes necessary to allow individuality through the learning process and to think about learning strategies in general.

Teaching and Learning efforts at universities has been dominated by Learning Management Systems since years now. On the other side the so-called Web 2.0 technologies arise and assist teachers as well as learners through communication or collaborating with each other. Furthermore new web technologies like mashups or new devices like mobile phones allow us to work with the World Web Web from anywhere at anytime. In this publication a so-called Personal Learning Environment is introduced which was launched at Graz University of Technology for the first time in 2010. After a prototype phase a complete redesign were carried out to address more appropriate to users' needs. With the help of metaphors like spaces and apps the interface became quite easily and fulfilled the change towards learner-centered framework. It can be concluded that the learning environment of tomorrow has to integrate Web services as well as university wide services in an easy and understandable way to become a Personal Learning Environment.
A multi-pronged approach to the enterprise-wide implementation of a personal learning environment

This paper describes the multi-pronged approach Griffith University has been undertaking in its implementation of an enterprise-wide ePortfolio platform (i.e. Personal Learning Environment). At the heart of the multi-faceted approach is a culture of collaboration between academic groups, the central learning and teaching unit, technology services, careers and employment and student success. A key principle guiding this approach has been facilitation of the sharing of ideas and resources from the identification of user requirements, to the integration across courses and programs. Together, four streams of activities have been implemented which include: embedding within the curriculum by academics, enhancing University employability strategies, engaging students through extracurricular connections and embedding into professional activities of staff. E-learning systems have been attainable for years with their different options and flexibilities. These systems provide opportunities like flexible structures with respect to time and space, personalization of learning and sharing of adaptable learning experience. With these features, e-learning systems gain places in the education environments. In this context, we reviewed the book " E-Learning Systems, Environments and Approaches: Theory and Implementation " edited by Pedro Isaías, J. Michael Spector, Dirk Ifenthaler and Demetrios G. Sampson (2015) which included theoretical knowledge on the e-learning technologies and contributed to the literature with experimental implementation examples in the education environments. The parts in the book focus on the subjects like technology integration, the change caused by the effect of e-learning on social environment, the effect of e-learning applications on communities and the cooperative and student-centred e-learning. The researchers studied these subjects through different research types and with regard to the pedagogical and technical aspects. The book is a study on twenty research subjects divided to four basic areas. The studies are presented in a very significant experimental and theoretical integrity with support from exemplary implementations, visuals and resources. Part I: Exploratory Learning Technologies The part includes four different studies with guiding findings to the researchers who want to carry out experimental application on the effect of technology integration in education.

The present study investigates the use of Learning Management Systems as tools constituting student's Personal Learning Environments in the degree of Informatics Applied to Education in the National University of Chimborazo-Ecuador. The main result of this work is that there is an increasing number of courses that rely on virtual classrooms, but learning occurs both in and out of these learning environments. This study is the starting point for future research on the relevance, impact, and effectiveness of incorporating Learning Management Systems in university teaching, as well as on relations and possibilities of integration between them, Personal Learning environments, and mobile learning trends.
