Weight status related to eating behaviors of school aged children in Warsaw

Introduction. Formation of proper eating habits is the main factor deciding about proper nutrition of a child. Less healthy dietary habits and poor food choices may be responsible for prevalence of overweight among children and adolescents. Aim. This work was aiming to examine the impact of eating habits on the weight status of children aged 11-13. Methods. A survey was conducted during the school year 2009/2010 in five primary schools, selected at random, in the area of Warsaw. A questionnaire on selected eating habits was answered by 380 pupils of the 5th and the 6th forms, and measurements of their weight and their height were taken. Results. It was found that among children eating at least 3 meals a day (p < 0.001; ANOVA) as well as eating meals with the family at least 5-6 times a week (p < 0.001) prevalence of obesity was significantly lower. Introduction. Eating habits are formed in the first years of life and sometimes persist throughout lifetime. It is necessary to develop coherent nutritional educational programs to guide adolescents towards a healthy diet. Material and methods. The study was conducted on a group of 194 students from the ninth and the twelfth grade from Dimitrie Cantemir High School in Iasi. These young people were evaluated for their physical development with the help of body mass index and eating habits. Eating habits were assessed on the basis of a weekly food intake questionnaire. The processing of the results was carried out by the Pearson test. Results. Physical development was mainly at normal values (68.55%). Poor dietary habits have become one of the most important concerns among public health policy makers in recent years, due to the impact they have on both economic and health systems of a country. The transitional period toward young adulthood, marked with high school graduation and the beginning of college years, has been identified as critical in terms of its influence on young people’s bad eating habits. The aim of this study was to assess whether the results obtained through Food Frequency Questionnaire significantly correlate with standard body parameters. Assessment of selected nutritional behaviours among college adolescents from Pomerania Province

Background. Adequate nutrition is one of the most important environmental factor that determines the development of children and adolescents. Childhood, as well as puberty significantly take part in forming proper nutritional attitudes and behaviours. Objectives. Assessment of selected nutritional behaviors among college adolescents from Pomerania Province. Subjects were students of high schools, trade schools and technical institutes. Material and methods. In the study 198 students participated-121 girls and 77 boys. A study was conducted during school year 2012/2013. Nutritional behavior was assessed due to an anonymous questionnaire that concerned nutritional self-assessment of adolescents, their interests in healthy dietary patterns, amount and type of daily consumed foods, time of consumption of last meal of the day, snacking between main meals; frequency together with a quality of the snacks, and sources of dietary knowledge acquisition. Results. Data analysis showed that boys ate dinner and supper statistically significantly more frequently than girls. Gender also defined consumption of products from different food groups. Boys statistically significantly more often were choosing white bread, dumplings, pasta, milk, red meat, poultry and eggs. The amount of underweight girls was three times higher than underweight boys. Snacking was observed in 99.0% of the study group. Diet regimens were conducted statistically more often by girls (37.5%) than boys (6.3%). Conclusions. It has been shown that there are a number of abnormal nutritional behaviors in the study group. This indicates the need for their correction through the education of both young people, but also parents and legal guardians. It is recommended that workshops, youth training by nutritionists in the field of proper nutrition and eating behavior.

Investigation of Nutritional Behavior of High School Students

Though there are many complex factors influencing diet, nutrition knowledge correlates with healthier food choices in older adolescents and can play a pivotal role in health. Numerous changes have been seen in the school environment regarding nutrition, but there is no means of testing nutrition curriculum effectiveness in terms of nutrition knowledge of students. It is the purpose of this descriptive study to improve understanding of the nutrition knowledge of high school students. In the study. the sample of the study consists of 311 students studying in different departments in high school in Yozgat and Çankırı. The questionnaires were given face to face by the interviewers by giving preliminary information to the volunteers. According to the findings, the nutritional behaviors of young people who are the future of our country is inadequate. According to these results, it is recommended to give nutrition training to students within a specific program.

National survey of body mass and dietary behaviour for middle school, high school and university students

Introduction: According to a report from the European Association for the Study of Obesity (EASO), there are 200 million overweight and obese school children in the world today. To assess body mass for students in Poland, in middle schools, high schools and universities, according to growth charts and BMI. Also, to investigate the link between chosen dietary habits and the risks to these subjects of being overweight and obese. Material and methods: The 13,566 subjects surveyed in 2011 consisted of middle school (3,548), high school (4,423) and university (5,595) students. The two younger groups received a questionnaire that had been devised by GIS (Poland's Chief Sanitary Inspectorate) based on one previously used for the WHO's global school-based student health survey (GSHS). An electronic questionnaire was used for the university students, made available at a designated internet site. Results: Overweight rates of 13%, 11% and 14% were found in students from middle-school, high-school and university. Overall obesity rates were 3%. Most subject ate three meals daily, although almost 1 in 5 said they ate only 1 to 2 meals daily. Snacking between meals was admitted by 84%, 89% and 89% of students, respectively, whereas corresponding rates for nighttime eating were 24%, 37% and 36%. Conclusions: The survey demonstrated that overweight status, according to growth charts and BMI, occurs in 13%, 11% and 14% of subjects in each student group, respectively. Overall, obesity accounts for 3% of respondents. Numerous instances of abnormal dietary habits were found, highlighted by irregular mealtimes, between-meal snacking and nighttime eating.

Evaluation of Nutrition Habits of Adolescents in the Aspect of Gender and Physical Activity

Background: Recognition of the dominant dietary behaviors with respect to gender and specific age groups can be helpful in the development of targeted and effective nutritional education. The purpose of the study was to analyze the prevalence of the selected eating behaviors (favorable: Consuming breakfasts, fruit, vegetables, milk and milk beverages, whole grain bread and fish; adverse: Regular consumption of sweets, sugared soft drinks and fast-foods) among Polish adolescents. Methods: Data on the nutritional behaviors were collected using a questionnaire. Body mass status was assessed based on weight and height measurements. Results: 14,044 students aged 13–19 years old from 207 schools participated in the study.
