Court and City seem to be to very opposite worlds during the Modern Period. Nevertheless, the presence of the Nobility is a reality in the Monarchic Residences. Through studying the Viennese establishment of an aristocratic lineage, the Counts of Harrach, between 1550 and 1750, we can estimate how much a social group with several identities (local, provincial or courtly) can integrate itself in the urban space. According to the importance of the urban noble property, their social leadership, their capacity to be visible in the urban landscape and the development of intimate relationship with the urban space, we may study how the Court nobility is actually integrated in the urban elites.
In the late Roman provinces of the Lugdunensis III and IV, several rural settlements reveal decorative elements or plans that suggest the presence of late antique phases. The present paper brings together the highly dispersed documentation and compares it with that from other regions from the Empire. It appears that the chronology of the Late Antiquity phases needs to be revised, and comparisons should be sought particularly regarding mosaic pavements in the late provinces of Roman Britannia.
Villas and Local Aristocracy in the Cities of Arles, Glanum, Aix and Marseille In Provence, the aristocracies of the Roman colonies of Arelate and Aquae Sextiae, of the civitas foederata of Massilia and of the colonia latina of the Durance valley are the descendants of Salyens or Cavares chiefs who took the part of Rome, of the Massaliotes who have entered the clienteles of the Imperatores and of the Italians who emigrated after the conquest and especially at the end of the Civil Wars. Rural Epigraphy (funerary and sanctuary inscriptions) allow the identification of large landowners’ families. The map of residential villas enables to draw a map of the areas that are the foundation of their fortune. Since the precise boundaries of cities are unknown, except from one sector of the cities of Arelate and Aquae, the space considered is arbitrarily limited by natural boundaries (the Rhône, the Durance, the Gapeau and the Mediterranean coast). This paper presents an ongoing study. Particular attention is given to Iulii. The preliminary conclusion of this ongoing study is that, in the space considered, the contribution of Roman emigrants has been mixed with a local aristocracy itself issued from the elites of the Salyens and of the Massaliotes. Keywords: Roman Empire, Southern Gaul, Municipal Aristocracies, Italian Emigration, Native Elites, Residential Villa, Large Rural Property.
