EDUCATIONAL FUNCTION OF SOCIAL NETWORKS: FORMATION OF COMMUNICATIVE COMPETENCE

WELLSO 2017 IV International Scientific Symposium Lifelong Wellbeing in the World, 2017

The last few years have shown us a significant leap in the development of the linguistic culture of the individual, due in large part to the advancement of new forms of communication in virtual reality. Not the least role in these processes is the effect of self-learning and the teaching of participants in various social networks, resulting in the emergence of new models of effective online learning. In this respect, social networks such as VKontakte, Facebook, etc., demonstrate a rapid development in the field of satisfying the user’s demand for. There is a certain tendency, when entertainment, the game turns into a useful process from the point of view of personal growth, cheerful communication with friends in virtual reality grows into group work on the solution of some problem. There is a formation of new communicative competence, both in the instrumental plan (changing the technology of information transfer: new vocabulary, new symbols, combination of different information transmission channels, etc.), as well as in content (changing the purpose and tasks of communication, shifting the authorship of the text, Joint statements, etc.). We believe that the study of this communicative competence, including from the point of view of its didactic capabilities, will contribute to a more harmonious development of the communicative environment of virtual reality, a reduction in the number of conflict situations and an increase in the success of speech utterances.

Teaching Professional Communication: A Practical Approach

Springer proceedings in business and economics, 2024

The purpose of this paper is to discuss the importance of soft skills in the workplace and presents an approach on teaching professional communication to college students one of the introductory courses taught in almost every Higher Institution in the U.S and abroad. Soft skills in the last decade and particularly in the after COVID-19 era are valued more than the hard ones during the hiring process. Communication skills, oral and written, have become necessary in all working environments. The paper discusses how informative and persuasive structures can help students not only how to communicate more effectively but also how to think more efficiently, organize their thinking and respond to professional challenges. As current trends and social media change the communication habits of young adults, teaching ways to think and speak or write is essential. This paper is for professionals and academics who delve in communication skills as an area of research and practice.

Professional Development Through Social Network Communities

EDULEARN proceedings, 2017

Professional development has change thanks to the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and the adoption and proliferation of the Internet. Social networks contribute to professional development through open experiences and communities or through more restricted and specific groups. In this paper, we analyze multiple forms of communication in social networks and argue that professional development is based on the construction of shared knowledge. Taken into consideration different types of online communities, we focus our study in massive online courses (open and massive networks) and in virtual communities (more restricted and closed groups), in order to answer the following questions: In what extend social networks are influencing individuals and promoting professional development? Are individuals managing the information and experiences from social networks for their professional development? By exploring the main changes that social networks provide for professional development we expect to contribute for further research and actions in this field of expertise.

Teaching networking: an interpersonal communication competence perspective

Voices of pedagogical development – Expanding, enhancing and exploring higher education language learning, 2015

M odern working life calls for competences that enable people to be creative, innovative and effective. Studies looking at contemporary enterprises and organisations such as businesses and schools have shown that many of the qualifications that graduating students would need, including informal learning (see Gielen, Hoeve & Nieuwenhuis 2003), innovativeness (e.g. Moolenaar & Sleegers 2010; Obstfeld 2005) and creativity (e.g. Burt 2004; Perry-Smith & Shalley 2003), are associated with interpersonal relationships and social networks. According to a report on the national career survey (EK 2011a), effective networking is dependent on social skills such as the ability to establish contacts in multicultural environments, the ability to discuss with others, understanding the perspectives of others and listening skills. For speech communication teachers and researchers, those skills listed above are communication skills, and more precisely, interpersonal communication skills. In this article, social networks are perceived from a perspective of interpersonal communication and networking is viewed as interpersonal communication competence. To date, the talents, characteristics and skills which people need when networking have not been consistently described from the perspective of interpersonal communication competence. Because it is possible to enhance this competence, we argue that networking is something that students could, and should, learn at the higher education level.

Researching The Influence of Online Social Networks on The Students’ Communication – 1St Part

International conference KNOWLEDGE-BASED ORGANIZATION, 2017

The usage of online social networks (OSN) in the last decade has changed the manner in which the individuals and especially the young people / students communicate with each other. The aim of our research paper, which is a part of a larger study, is to identify the manner in which the online social networks influence the communication process of the students from Sibiu and Alba Counties of Romania. The present marketing research is a quantitative one, based on a questionnaire that provides a clear insight on what are the main OSN used by the students and it shows how or if the students use the OSN to express their feelings and emotions. The research also shows the influence in the communication process between students and teachers, it points out the main reasons for using such a communication tool and activities undertaken by the students on their preferred OSN.

Learning networks and communication skills

Alt-j, 2000

The project work presented in this paper is funded by the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) January-December 1999. Our task has been to identify effective communicative practices for different technologies, in relation to the contexts in which they occur, and to feed back information about such practices to the educational community in a context-sensitive way. The technologies at issue are: video conferencing (one-to-one, one-to-many, many-to-many); text-based communication (email, bulletin boards, conferencing,) and audio conferencing (telephone tutoring, shared workspace plus audio link). The teaching and learning sites that agreed to take part in this research project provide courses to a variety of learners -undergraduate, postgraduate, professional, full-and part-time -in a spread of subject disciplines. The breadth and range of learning environments represented should maximize the chances of teachers in further and higher education recognizing issues and circumstances that are similar to their own and provide a rich comparative framework. The lecturers from the various teaching sites are regarded as collaborators in this research, identifying their own issues and learning needs, and providing feedback to authenticate the interpretative process. This study approach bridges the practice-theory gap. We have completed the field work and are midway through analysing and interpreting the data in collaboration with teachers and students involved in the study. This will lead to the production of a flexible resource for individual lecturing staff which can also underpin staff development courses in good practice within networked learning environments. Further details and progress updates can be gleaned from our project web site at
