Product Design and Development of Tender Coconut Punching and Splitting Machine
Coconut is the " Tree of Heaven " , that provides many necessities of life including food and shelter. It is mainly cultivated for its nuts; it yields oil, oil cake and fiber. Water from tender coconut is a common refreshing drink and has been used as an excellent isotonic in several tropical countries. Despite of all these uses, a common problem that many people are facing in a developing country like India is punching and splitting the tender coconut. The existing (traditional) tools used are unsafe, messy and also needs skill and training. The risk of injury is also too high. There are some machines for pairing coconut, but until now no tool exists to punch a hole and split it open. This necessitates the development of a punch-cum-splitter for punching and splitting the tender coconut. The present work focuses on the development of a manually operated coconut punch-cum-splitter for extracting coconut water and coconut meat. In this direction, customer needs statement was translated to the concept; by concept generation. The best concept was selected using pugh matrix and concept scoring matrix. The selected concept mainly consists of punch operated by a lever and torsion spring mechanism. When the tender coconut has to be punched, the operator places the tender coconut on the top of the holding mechanism in natural rest position and the lever is raised and pressed against the tender coconut to punch a hole. For splitting, the tender coconut is placed in the rest position and the lever is raised & operated to split the tender coconut to extract the meat. The selected concept is further analyzed in terms of its functionality and cost.
DEVELOPMENT OF MULTIPURPOSE PUNCHING AND CUTTING MACHINES
Two models of multipurpose machine viz. sitting model and standing model to punch a hole in tender coconut, to split a tender coconut after drinking inside water, to dehusk the ripened coconut, cutting a sugarcane bud chip, to cut raw mango into small pieces for pickle preparation and for bottle corking were developed by Dr. D. Y. Patil College of Agricultural Engineering and Technology, Talsande, Kolhapur (M. S.) India in December, 2014. These two models were studied for their performance and compared with traditional tools/machines. The sitting model of multipurpose machine was able to perform six operations viz. tender coconut punching, tender coconut cutting or splitting matured coconut dehusking, raw mango cutting, bottle corking and sugarcane set cutting. This model performed best in punching of tender coconuts (69 coconuts/hr) and dehusking of matured coconuts (75 coconuts/hr) than other purposes of the machine when compared with standing model and traditional methods. Standing model of multipurpose machine was able to perform all operations that sitting model can perform except matured coconut dehusking and bottle corking. Standing model performed best in cutting or splitting of tender coconuts (102 coconuts/hr) and raw mangoes cutting (21.22 kg/hr) than other purposes of the machine when compared with sitting model and traditional method. Both the models of multipurpose machine have shown poor performance in sugarcane set cutting when compared with traditional cutter.

Journal of Scientific Research of the Banaras Hindu University, 2021
Coconuts play an imperative role in Indian culture, tradition and economy. Coconut water vending is one of common street vending business. Cutting a tender coconut is considered as messy, unsafe and has high risk of injuries. Therefore there is need for designing tender coconut punching tools. A market survey was conducted to explore the availability of different manually operated tender coconut punching tools available in local and online markets. By studying the available tools three tools for punching tender coconuts were designed. Among the three tools one tool was designed to operate by hand. This hand operated tool was named as "manual tender coco opener". The other two tools were with same type of design one is battery operated and the other work on electrical power. The battery operated tool is named as "tender coco punching tool" and the electrical power operated tool is named as "tender coco drill machine". The three tools along with the existing two mechanisms and conventional method were assessed by a local tender coconut vendor by means of RULA. The results showed that punching tender coconut by using tender coco punching tool was found comfortable.

ARTICLE INFO India is the world’s third largest producer of coconut after the Philippines and Indonesia. India alone accounts for about 70% of the world production of coir and coir products. The total output of coir and coir products in India is estimated to be around Rs.1500.00 crore including exports of Rs.350.00 crore. All the parts of coconut orchard such as coconut husk, shell, copra, coconut water are useful. Coconut husk is used in coir industry, shell as a fuel, copra as food, coconut water as nutritious liquid. There are many farm equipment’s and tools which are developed for the post harvesting operation of horticultural crops. The dehusking of a coconut is regarded as the most time consuming, tiring, and difficult operation to perform and involves much human drudgery. Many attempts has been done to perform coconut dehusking manually as well as mechanized. Dehusking with traditional hand tools like machete or a spike depends on the skill of worker and involves training. No...
Development and Performance Evaluation of Coconut Dehusking Machine
-Contrary to the immense economic importance of coconut for both industrial and domestic uses, dehusking of the fruits after harvesting constitutes the most difficult and dangerous operations during processing. Performance evaluation of coconut dehusking machine was carried out. The machine was designed and fabricated using locally sourced materials. It consists of the supporting frame where the machine components were mounted. The de-husking unit consists of two galvanized steel pipe rollers with spikes and shafts. The driving and driven roller shafts are mild steel rods supported at both ends by ball bearings. Six spur gears were used with various pitch circle diameters and number of teeth respectively, and were attached proportionally to the driving and driven roller based on their functions in the machine. The flywheel is driven by a pinion which is attached to pulley and connected with a V-belt to the pulley of the electric motor, and rotates at the same speed with the driving gear. Two middle gears mounted on the same shaft with the flywheel were also incorporated to produce high torque. When the motor is switch on, power is transmitted through the gearing arrangement to the rollers with plurality of spikes and rotate them in opposite directions towards the center there by causing both the gripping and tearing of the husk when coconut is placed in between the rollers. While the rollers rotate, a feeding clamp welded to the frame is used to feed coconut fruit in the de-husking unit and a spring is attached to enable relative motion between the coconut fruit and the rollers during de-husking. Different sizes of coconut fruits were loaded at different times on the machine and the time taken for each fruit to be dehusked was recorded. A total of 80 fresh nuts were tested. The performance evaluation shows that the average efficiency of the machine was 92.50% while the average capacity is 120.6 coconuts per hour. On the other hand, the percentage number of distorted and broken coconuts were 7.5% and 3.75%. These figures are however infinitesimal Compare to the existing coconut dehusking machines. Hence it is recommended for use by farmers.
