Comparison of Canopy Cover Effects on Rainfall Interception Loss in Tropical Forest with Homogenous and Mixed Tree Species

Jurnal Teknologi

This study was designed to determine the canopy cover, c of the tropical forest and explore its effects on the interception loss amount. The study area was a reserved forest Lagong Hill Forest Reserve, Kepong, Selangor, Malaysia, where two plots with an area of 400 m2 (20 m x 20 m) each have been set up to collect the data. In order to determine the measured interception loss, rainfall, throughfall, and stemflow data have been measured on site. The tree with a diameter at breast height (dbh) of more than 10 cm was selected in collecting the stemflow data. Twenty-five (25) locations have been chosen for the digital hemispherical photographs to be taken. The forest standing of the study area has been visualised by Stand Visualization System (SVS) method, and WinSCanopy 2009a and RGBFisheye.exe application software has been used to obtain the canopy cover values. In this study, the correlation between canopy cover and interception loss were obtained for both plots. It is found that the...

Canopy water storage capacity and it`s effect on rainfall interception in a Pinus eldarica plantation in a semi-arid climate zone

تحقیقات جنگل و صنوبر ایران, 2012

Forest canopy rainfall interception loss (I) and canopy water storage capacity (S) are important components of the water balance in arid and semi-arid climate zones. The goal of this research was to quantify S and free throughfall (p) in a mature Pinus eldarica Medw. afforestation planted in the Chitgar Forest plantation near Tehran, Iran. Measurements of gross precipitation (GR (n=6)) and throughfall (TF (n=45)) were recorded on an event basis from September 2009 to April 2010. I was calculated as the difference between GR and TF. For the measurement period, GR totaled 164.8 mm and rainfall interception loss (I) was 61.2 mm. In this study S was estimated as 1.7 mm, 1.4 mm and 1.8 mm by methods of Leyton, Gash and Morton, and Pypker- Jackson, respectively. Free throughfall (p) was estimated 0.1422. I was estimated 44% and 91.3% of total GR for rainfall events sufficient to saturate the canopy (GR>1.6 mm) and insufficient to saturate the canopy (GR>1.6 mm), respectively. The re...

Spatial Variation of Throughfall in Two Tree Plantations in Abeokuta, South-Western Nigeria

This paper determined the variability of throughfall in two tree plantations on the campus of University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, South Western Nigeria. It involved the use of experimental plots consisting of Tectona Grandis and Gmeliba Arborea. Gross precipitation and thoughfall were measured and determined for a month. The data obtained was analysed using simple descriptive statistics such as means, percentages and frequency counts. Correlation analysis was used to determine the relationship between gross precipitation and throughfall under each tree plantation. Results show that Tectona plantation had more throughfall throughout the period of study than that of Grnelna plantation. Also there is a strong relationship between gross precipitation and throughtfall in the two plantation. The implication of the results for the management and use of water resources in the study area were discussed and recommendations made as to how water trapped through interception can be better managed.
