Trends in Prevalence of Thyroid Cancer Over Three Decades: A Retrospective Cohort Study of 17,526 Surgical Patients

World journal of surgery, 2015

Thyroid cancer (TC) incidence has been increasing in recent years. The aim of this study was to investigate our institution-based estimates of operative volumes for TC over the last three decades. This was a retrospective cohort study of patients undergoing thyroid surgery at our institution. Patient characteristics were reviewed in three subgroups: Group I (treated in 1981-1986), Group II (treated in 1987-2002), and Group III (treated in 2003-2012). TC was diagnosed in 1578/17,526 (9.0 %) thyroid operations. Incidence of TC increased from 3.7 % in Group I to 10.4 % in Group III (p < 0.001). Incidence of papillary TC increased form 40.6 % in Group I to 81.3 % in Group III (p < 0.001). In the latter group, 23.5 % of all papillary TCs were diagnosed in patients with Hashimoto's disease. Meanwhile, incidence of anaplastic TC decreased from 16.2 % in Group I to 2.1 % in Group III patients (p < 0.001). pT1 tumors were diagnosed in 8.1 % Group I and 54.8 % Group III (p < 0...

Thyroid Malignancy(Incidence and Management):A Three-Years Study in Al-Hilla Surgical Hospitals Retrospective Study

Thyroid disease is the most common surgical endocrine disease, and thyroid carcinoma is the most common endocrine malignancy. It occurs more often in people who live in areas with iodine deficiency like our country. There is great controversy about the incidence of thyroid carcinoma. Objectives: to evaluate the characteristics of thyroid cancer patients in regard to demographic distribution, histological variants, mode of presentation and modalities of surgical treatment. Method: we retrospectively audited the records of 33 patients with histological proof of thyroid carcinoma, out of 375 goiter patients, between Jan 2005-Feb 2008 in Al-Hilla surgical hospitals. Results: Patients with thyroid carcinoma comprise 8.8% of goiter patients. Female constitute 75.7%, males 24.2%, with mean age (39.6) years. Male to female ratio is 1/3. Goiter was the most common presentation, with multinodular goiter account for 57.5%, and thyroid nodule account for 27.5%. The diagnoses confirmed by histop...

Actual status of preoperative diagnosis of thyroid cancer in Albania

Il Giornale di chirurgia

Thyroid cancer is the most common endocrine malignancy and accounts for almost 1% of human cancer. It is well known that the majority of cases occur in women in the middle decades of life. Thyroid cancer is a relatively rare disease; on the other hand clinically apparent thyroid nodules are present in 4-7% of the adult population. Most thyroid nodules are not malignant, with reported malignancy rates from 3-12%. It is important for the surgeon to know beforehand the diagnosis of malignancy, in order to perform a more radical operation on the thyroid gland. In our study we have analyzed the preoperative clinical data of 84 patients operated in the First Clinic of General Surgery, UHC "Mother Theresa" in Tirana; all with a positive histopathologic diagnosis of thyroid cancer. The data comprised age, sex, age distribution, blood group, time-lapse from the first endocrinologic visit, clinical examination, signs and symptoms, imaging, functional tests, preoperative FNA, admissi...

Incidence of thyroid pathologies requiring thyroid surgeries in a tertiary care hospital

International Surgery Journal

Background: Diseases of the thyroid gland are one of the most common endocrine disorders in India and the world, many of these diseases require surgery for their treatment. The incidence of thyroid diseases differs from one geographical area to another. This study was aimed at finding out the thyroid pathologies for which thyroid surgeries were performed in D. Y. Patil Hospital, Nerul, Navi Mumbai. Methods: It is a retrospective analysis of all the patients who have undergone thyroid surgeries (lobectomy, hemithyroidectomy, subtotal or near total thyroidectomy or total thyroidectomy) in D. Y. Patil hospital, Nerul, Navi Mumbai from 1st January 2018 to 31st December 2019 (2 years duration). Results: Most common pathology for which thyroidectomy was performed was colloid goitre (41.33%). Benign diseases of the thyroid was much more common (76%) than malignant diseases (24%). Most common malignancy was papillary carcinoma thyroid. Thyroid surgeries were most commonly performed on women i...

Surgical treatment of differentiated thyroid carcinoma: a retrospective study

Frontiers in Bioscience, 2006

A retrospective study was carried out to assessed reliability of the prognostic factors (histology, age, sex, and stage), and standard procedures for the surgical treatment of differentiated thyroid cancers (DTC). From the 144 DTC cases reviewed with follow-up ranging from 1 to 25 years (m=6.33 years), total mortality for cancer was found to be 55% (8 patients), with a predictive positive value for recurrence of 95.4% and 91.8% at 12 and 24 months, respectively. Median survival was 8.8 years (range 1 to 25 years). The multivariate analysis showed that factors such as age > 45 years, histology of intermediate malignancy, size up to 1.5 cm, and presence of metastases, significantly worsened the prognosis, regardless of the intervention that was carried out. We suggest total thyroidectomy for the treatment of benign pathologies and confirmed or susepected cases of cancer. We reserve loboisthmectomy for the treatment of benign pathologies confined to one lobe or those with FNAB suggesting a follicular neoplasm.

A Clinicopathological Study of Thyroid Cancers at King Edward Medical University / Mayo Hospital, Lahore

2011

Objective: The study was conducted to determine the frequency and clinicopathological aspects of various types of thyroid cancers in patients presenting with goitres and thyroid nodules. Study Design: Descriptive cross sectional study. Place and Duration of Study: It was an 11 year ret-rospective study commencing from January 2000 to December 2010 conducted at the Department of Patho-logy, King Edward Medical University, Lahore, Pakis-tan. Materials and Methods: Clinical data and Histopa-thology Reports of 2785 thyroid surgical specimens referred from the Surgical Units of Mayo Hospital, La-hore were reviewed and malignant cases were retri-eved for inclusion in this study. Patients from both sexes and all age groups were included. Results: Reports of a total of 2785 thyroid specimens were reviewed, out of which 170 cases (6.10%) were found to be thyroid cancers. These comprised of 130 cancers (76.47%) in females and 40 cases (23.52%) in males giving a female to male ratio ...

Thyroid Surgery in Geriatric Patient: Experience in a Tertiary Care Centre in Rural Kerala

2014

To study about additional risks associated with thyroid surgery in the elderly population. DESIGN: Retrospective analysis of a prospective documented data in consecutive patients undergoing thyroid surgery from January 2012 to June 2014 in a tertiary care health center. PATIENTS: The study included patients aged 30 to 40 years as control group and patients of 60 years and above who underwent thyroidectomy. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Pathology reports, complications (including rates of temporary and permanent hypocalcemia and stridor, seroma/hematoma, and duration of hospital stay. RESULTS: There were 68 patients of 30-40 age group who underwent thyroidectomy between January 2012 and June of 2014; 46 elderly patients underwent surgery during that same time frame. There were no deaths in both cohort, and no cases of permanent TVF paralysis. The elderly patients had a similar rate of complications when compared with the younger patients, (60% vs 70%) but a higher duration of hospital stay (6.9 vs 5.4). CONCLUSIONS: Thyroid surgeons will be faced more often with the prospect of elective thyroid surgery in patients of advanced age, as an increasingly aged population emerges and the prevalence of thyroid nodules and thyroid cancer increases. Thyroid surgery in optimized elderly patients is safe and no more dangerous, than surgery in younger patients though the duration of hospital stay is more.

Assessment of the relationship between clinical and histopathological features in cases of thyroidectomy

Annali italiani di chirurgia, 2018

AIM The aim of this study is to evaluate the relationship between clinical parameters and ultimate histopathologic features of patients underwent thyroid surgery. METHOD Demographic and clinicopathologic parameters of patients who underwent thyroid surgery for benign or malignant disease in our clinic between June 2006 and March 2014 were retrospectively reviewed. Pearson's Chi-Square, Independent Sample T test, ROC Curve and Youden J Index were used to investigate whether there was any relationship between the clinical parameters and permanent histopathologic features of patients. RESULTS A total of 3059 patients (Benign: 2727; Malign: 332) aged between 15 and 90 years were reviewed. The patients age was higher in malign group (mean ± SD: 46.8 ± 4.2) than benign group (mean ± SD: 43.7 ± 12.9 yr) and this difference was statistically significant (p <0.001). The nodule diameter (mean ± SD: 30.8 ± 13.5 mm) was greater in malign group than the benign group (mean ± SD: 28.3 ± 13....
