The major sources of noise in a construction site is identified as the power generating set and other heavy duty machines. Some selected machines used in the construction site is evaluated by taking readings (sound levels) at varying distances to ascertain the noise levels of these machines. The study employed the use of physical/acoustic measurement and questionnaires for social survey. The results of the field experiments were graphically represented. The study recommends that the issue of environmental noise is really a menace in the society and should be looked into by relevant government agencies, also that residential buildings and offices cited close to construction site should be fully insulated to avoid annoyance.
Health Hazards Associated with Noise Due to Civil Construction Activity
Journal of Southwest Jiaotong University, 2020
The article objective is to study the health hazards that arise from the noise produced during civil construction activity and to determine the frequency distribution of the noise amplitude using the fast Fourier transform technique. Samples of sound were recorded using standard calibrated recording devices. The samples were analyzed using the fast Fourier transform technique to obtain the frequency distribution of the noise amplitude. The noise power was estimated using the square of the amplitude. The noise amplitude spectra of different samples of noise collected from civil construction sites were successfully determined using the fast Fourier transform technique. It was found that most of the noise produced during civil construction activity was situated within the frequency spectrum to which the human ear is most responsive. The results of this study show that the noise produced during civil construction activity is a type of broadband noise occupying the region of frequencies to which the human ear is most sensitive. Therefore, such noise is capable of causing harm, including hearing impairment, to people in the vicinity of construction sites.
Noise, Vibration and Perception of Risks of Workers of the Construction Sector
Acta Acustica united with Acustica, 2010
Noise and vibration are twoofthe physical contaminants most commonly found in the construction sector. They can cause several negative effects on the workers and may have avery important influence on people'shealth and well-being. Furthermore, the perception of the noise can influence on the awareness of the risks the workers are expose to. Therefore, it is necessary to assess the noise and vibration exposure and to develop mechanisms for studying and proposing preventive solutions. Anumber of representative measurements have been carried out using asound levelmeter, adosimeter, avibration meter and aHAT Stocollect data from non-specialized workers of the construction sector, which are the most exposed to noise and vibration due to the different tasks involving machines theyare in charge of. Analysis of the most important levels and indexeshavebeen done with those data, and afterwards, theyhavebeen compared to the limits imposed by the different current regulations. This work has studied the noise and vibration levels which the workers of the construction sector are exposed to, as well as the perception of the measured noises by workers and another population. The noise and vibration levels the measured workers are exposed to are extremely high and potentially dangerous for their health. The levels surpass the legallimits by far. The construction workers may be in danger due to high levels of noise and vibrations, depending on the machines theyuse. The workers are not aware of such danger buttheyperceive the levels are high and showtheir discomfort through the subjective tests of perception. Preventive measures should be compulsorily implemented.
Implementation of noise management in construction site
2013
Recently, safety and health in construction industry are widely being discussed between academics and professionals. It is true that the construction industry is one of the riskiest sectors which contribute to a quite a number of accidents. Noise exposure is one of the hazards in construction site that could lead to accidents and also negative impacts to human health. There are several regulations and guidelines to prevent the massive exposure to construction workers. However, most of the construction workers are lack of awareness about the impacts of the noise emission to their health. The aim of this research is to investigate the current implementation of noise management for a construction site and the perception of the construction workers in the Malaysian construction industry about the hazard of noise. EMP and EMR report was used to investigate the implementation of noise control management in the construction site. Dosimeter was used to measure the noise exposure level for t...
Analysis and Evaluation of Risks from Exposure to Noise in a Working Environment
Acta Mechanica Slovaca
This paper deals with a proposal of assessment of hearing impairment risk from the point of view of long-term exposure to noise in a selected plant in the Slovak Republic. Measurement and monitoring noise was carried out at two workshops of a mechanical engineering plant: in a "Cutting Center" and in a "Welding Center". A Norsonic sound analyser was used to measure noise exposure. Evaluation of the noise measurement results consisted of the comparison of the measured values with the required values, which are specified, in the relevant legislative regulation (Government Regulation No. 115/2006 Coll., technical standard (STN EN ISO 9612:2010 and Directive (Council Directive 2003/10/EC). The measured results show that the normalized levels of noise exposure, extended by the uncertainty of measurement (U = ± 2,1 dB) at the all workplaces, exceed the limits stipulated by the Slovak Government, all measured professions fall within the fourth category of work activities categorized according to the noise factor. Long-term exposure of the human organism to noise pollution can cause, in addition to hearing impairment, a wide range of other diseases. Very high levels of noise cause hearing impairment, lower levels affect the control system in our body. This paper presents the results of a study aimed at assessing the risks associated with acoustic noise in connection with exposure to noise at the workplace and with its possible negative effects (a risk event) to health and hearing of workers in the engineering industry.
Noise Exposure Assessment in Construction Equipment Operators in Tehran, Iran
Journal of UOEH, 2022
Occupational hearing loss is a common complication among construction workers, especially those working with heavy machinery and construction equipment. This research measured the noise that construction operators are exposed to, and proves that most of the construction equipment operators that we studied have a potential risk of hearing impairment. We examined 22 types of construction machinery that are commonly used in various stages of construction projects in Tehran (demolition, excavation, and execution). The noise that construction operators were exposed to was measured with a dosimeter during 8 working hours, and the Time-Weighted Average (TWA) was calculated for each operator according to OSHA standards. Finally, a suitable hearing protection device (HPD) was suggested. The results indicated that the operators of D8N (opened-cab) and CAT D8L SA (closed-cab) bulldozers were exposed to more noise than other operators in this study. Hand-saw, Caterpillar 943, and Komatsu 470 loader operators were also exposed to significant noise levels. Other operators, such as drivers of older Benz and Volvo trucks, the Backhoe HLB95, the Soosan mobile crane, and the Bobcat were also exposed to heavy noise that put them at risk of occupational hearing loss.

Proceedings 8th International Seminar on Industrial Engineering and Management (ISIEM), 17-19 March, Malang, 2015
Noise is a problem that is often encountered many industrial workers today. The cement plant has production machines with high noise level. The noisy environment will arise risks on workers. The purpose of this study was to determined noise level and its effect on workers in a cement plant. The noise intensity was measured at three area of the plants ; raw mill, cement mill, and sillo raw mix. There were 23 measuring points where considered as hazardous potential to workers. The measurement was carried out seven times during three days on each area. To found effects of noise exposure on workers by questionnaires. It used to found existing of physiological, psychological, and communication disturbs. The results indicated that all measured points exceeded the threshold limit value 85 dBA for 8 working hours. Raw mill and sillo raw mix have the highest equivalent noise level where each area reached 118,1 dBA and 119 dBA. The highest annoyance based on workers response was communication disturbs. Recommendations for reducting this negative effects had given technically, administratively, and control noise at receiver. Key words: noise level, effects of noise exposure, cement plant
Noise Exposure among Machine Operators on Construction Sites in South Johor, Malaysia
Advanced Materials Research, 2013
Machines operators expose to excessive noise in the workplace that may lead to hearing damage. This study investigates construction machine operators noise exposure levels for eight hours or time weighting averages (TWAs), relationship TWA with machine noise emission level, the practices of using hearing protection devices (HPDs) and working in a closed machine cab. Heavy and non-heavy machine operators at five construction sites involved with excavation and piling activities were selected and measured by using dosimeters. 68% of operators were exposed to TWA of 85 dBA and 18% of the operators exceeded the permissible limit. 40% of operators work inside a closed machine cab, 18% wear earplugs and only 16% practiced both. Both operators of heavy machines (except excavators) and dump trucks are exposed to TWA > 90 dBA if they work in open machine cabs. The TWAs were found well correlated (r=0.41) with the machine noise emission, which ranged between 84 dBA to 125 dBA. Furthermore, ...
An assessment of occupational noise exposures in four construction trades
American Industrial Hygiene Association journal
Three hundred thirty-eight noise exposure samples were collected from 133 construction workers employed in 4 construction trades: carpenters, laborers, ironworkers, and operating engineers. Four sites using a variety of construction techniques were sampled at least 12 times on a randomly chosen date over a 22-week period. Up to 10 volunteer workers were sampled for an entire work shift on each sampling day using datalogging noise dosimeters, which recorded both daily time-weighted averages (TWAs) and 1-min averages. Workers also completed a questionnaire throughout the workday detailing the tasks performed and tools used throughout the day. Regression models identified work characteristics associated with elevated exposure levels. Comparisons were made between exposures measured using the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) exposure metric and the 1996 draft National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health/International Organization for Standardization (NIOSH/I...
