ARTIFICIAL NEURAL NETWORK APPLICATIONS IN GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING
2001
Over the last few years or so, the use of artificial neural networks ( ANNs) has increased in many areas of engineering. In particular, ANNs have been applied to many geotechnical engineering problems and have demonstrated some degree of success. A review of the literature reveals that ANNs have been used successfully in pile capacity prediction, modelling soil behaviour, site characterisation, earth retaining structures, settlement of structures, slope stability, design of tunnels and underground openings, liquefaction, soil permeability and hydraulic conductivity, soil compaction, soil swelling and classification of soils. The objective of this paper is to provide a general view of some ANN applications for solving some types of geotechnical engineering problems. It is not intended to describe the ANNs modelling issues in geotechnical engineering. The paper also does not intend to cover every single application or scientific paper that found in the literature. For brevity, some wo...

In recent years artificial neural networks (ANNs) have been applied to many geotechnical engineering problems with some degree of success. With respect to the design of pile foundations, accurate prediction of pile settlement is necessary to ensure appropriate structural and serviceability performance. In this paper, an ANN model is developed for predicting pile settlement based on the results of cone penetration test (CPT) data. Approximately, 300 data sets, obtained from the published literature, are used to develop the ANN model. In addition, the paper discusses the choice of input and internal network parameters which were examined to obtain the optimum model. Finally, the paper compares the predictions obtained by the ANN with those given by a number of traditional methods. It is demonstrated that the ANN model outperforms the traditional methods and provides accurate pile settlement predictions.

The present study focuses on the development of an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) model equation to estimate the settlement of a shallow strip footing resting on granular soils due to combination of static and cyclic load. The model is developed using 324 number of datasets obtained from finite element analysis carried out with the help of Opensees. The input parameters are relative density (D r %) of soil, depth of embedment (D f / B) of footing, intensity of static load depending on the factor of safety (FS), intensity of cyclic load (q d(max)/ q u (%)) and frequency (f) of applied cyclic load to estimate non-dimensional settlement, s/s u (%) of footing as output. Importance of input parameters are studied using Pearson's correlation and Spearman's rank correlation as well as sensitivity analysis based on Variable Perturbation method and Weight methods. The effect of input parameters on output is studied by using Neural Interpretation Diagram (NID).
Intelligent computing for predicting axial capacity of drilled shafts
Geotechnical Special Publication, 2009
In the last few decades, numerous methods have been developed for predicting the axial capacity of drilled shafts. Among the available methods, the cone penetration test (CPT) based models have been shown to give better predictions in many situations. This can be attributed to the fact that CPT-based methods have been developed in accordance with the results of the CPT tests, which have been found to yield more reliable soil properties, hence, more accurate axial capacity predictions of drilled shafts. In this paper, one of the most commonly used artificial intelligence techniques, i.e. artificial neural networks (ANNs), was utilized in an attempt to obtain more accurate axial capacity predictions for drilled shafts. The ANN model was developed using data collected from the literature that comprise CPT results and drilled shaft load tests of 94 case records. The predictions from the ANN model were compared with those obtained from three commonly used available CPT-based methods. The results indicate that the ANN-based model provides more accurate axial capacity predictions of drilled shafts and outperforms the available conventional methods.
The application of artificial neural network in geotechnical engineering
IOP Conference Series: Earth and Environmental Science, 2018
The artificial neural network (ANN) is a machine learning technique, which can simulate the physiological structure and mechanism of human brain. The study aims to review the principles of ANN algorithm and their application in geotechnical engineering. Firstly, the basic principles of ANN algorithm are introduced. Secondly, the application of ANN algorithm is presented. The review suggests that ANN can classify soil accurately, and it is able to group rock mass, predict the stability of slopes exactly, which could be used for risk assessment. The predicted settlement that is generated by ANN is near real value.

The research presented in this thesis focuses on the settlement prediction of shallow foundations on cohesionless soils using artificial neural techniques. The problem of estimating the settlement of shallow foundations on cohesionless soils is very complex and not yet entirely understood. Over the years, many methods have been developed to predict the settlement of shallow foundations on cohesionless soils. However, methods for such predictions that have the required degree ofaccuracy and consistency have not yet been developed. Accurate prediction of settlement is essential since settlement, rather than bearing capacity, generally controls the design process of shallow foundations. In this research, artihcial neural networks (ANNs) are used in an attempt to obtain more accurate settlement prediction. ANNs are numerical modelling techniques that are inspired by the functioning of the human brain and nerve system. ANNs use the data alone to determine the structure of the model as well as the unknown model parameters' ANNs have been applied successfully to many problems in the field of geotechnical engineering and some of their applications are demonstrated in this thesis. A large database comprising a total of 189 case records is used to develop and verift the ANN models. Five parameters are considered to have the most significant impact on the settlement of shallow foundations on cohesionless soils and are thus used as the ANN model inputs. These include the footing width, footing net applied pressure, average SPT blow count over the depth of influence of the foundation, footing geometry and footing embedment ratio. The model output is the average measured sefflement of the foundation, considered in its final state. Two types of ANNs are used for the development of ANN models. The first type is multi-layer perceptrons (MLps) that are trained using the back-propagation algorithm, whereas the second type are B-spline neurofuzzy networks that are trained with the adaptive spline modelling of observation data (ASMOD) algorithm. In relation to the multi-layer perceptrons, the feasibility of ANNs for predicting the settlement of shallow foundations on cohesionless soils is investigated. A number of issues in relation to ANN construction, optimisation and validation are also investigated and guidelines for improving ANN performance are lv Abstract v developed. The issue of data division and its impact on ANN model performance is investigated in some detail by examining four different data division methods, namely, random data division; data division to ensure statistical consistency of the subsets needed for ANN model development; data division using self-organising maps (SOMs) and a new data division method using fuzzy clustering. The success or otherwise of ANNs for settlement prediction of shallow foundations on cohesionless soils is illustrated and compared with three of the most commonly used settlement prediction methods. A hand-calculation design formula for settlement prediction of shallow foundations on cohesionless soils that is based on a more accurate settlement prediction from ANN model is presented. It was found that ANNs have the ability to predict the settlement of shallow foundations on cohesionless soils with a high degree of accuracy and ouþerform traditional methods. It was also found that the new data division method that is based on fuz,zy clustering is suitable approach for data division. In relation to the newofuzzy models, the ability of ANNs to provide a better understanding of the relationship between settlement and the factors affecting settlement is investigated. It was found that neurofuzzy networks have the abilþ to provide a transparent understanding of the relationship between settlement and the factors affecting it. Settlement analysis is often affected by considerable levels of uncertainty that are usually ignored by traditional methods. In this research, ANNs are linked with Monte Carlo simulation to provide a stochastic solution for settlement prediction that takes into account the uncertainties associated with settlement analysis. A set of stochastic design charts that provide the designer with the level of risk associated with predicted settlements are developed and provided.

This study presents a literature review on the use of artificial neural networks in the prediction of geo-mechanical properties of stabilised clays. In this paper, the application of ANNs in a geotechnical analysis of clay stabilised with cement, lime, geopolymers and by-product cementitious materials has been evaluated. The chemical treatment of expansive clays will involve the development of optimum binder mix proportions or the improvement of a specific soil property using additives. These procedures often generate large data requiring regression analysis in order to correlate experimental data and model the performance of the soil in the field. These analyses involve large datasets and tedious mathematical procedures to correlate the variables and develop required models using traditional regression analysis. The findings from this study show that ANNs are becoming well known in dealing with the problem of mathematical modelling involving nonlinear functions due to their robust ...
