Understanding the Psychological Impact of social media on Adolescent Well-being

Understanding the Psychological Impact of social media on Adolescent Well-being, 2023

This research discovers the complicated relationship between social media usage and adolescent well-being, employing a mixed-methods approach to offer wide-ranging insights. Quantitative analyses reveal a significant correlation (p < 0.05, r = 0.25) between increased social media exposure and self-reported depressive symptoms amongst a diverse sample of adolescents aged 13 to 18. Temporal patterns, recognized through Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) data, suggest a potential link between late-night social media use and disruptions in sleep patterns. Qualitative findings further enrich the narrative, detecting unexpected themes such as social media serving as both a stressor and a coping mechanism, and platform-specific impacts on body image and community support. Practical implications comprise recommendations for parents, educators, and policymakers, highlighting the requirement for open communication, balanced screen time, and digital literacy education. Potential interventions focus on instructive programs, school-based initiatives, and collaborative efforts with social media platforms. The study concludes by highlighting the significance of continuing research to navigate the developing digital landscape and calls for an all-inclusive approach to address the challenges while leveraging the benefits of social media for adolescent well-being.

Effects of Social Media Use on Adolescent Psychological Well-Being: A Systematic Literature Review

International Journal of Interactive Mobile Technologies (iJIM)

This study aims to explore the intricate relationship between social media use and the overall well-being (WB) of young people. Previous research has presented conflicting findings, indicating both positive and negative effects of online platforms. Issues such as excessive use, reduced face-to-face interactions, social isolation, heightened stress levels, and disrupted sleep patterns have been identified as potential concerns. However, studies have also highlighted that moderate and mindful use of social media can enhance WB by facilitating social connections and support. It is crucial to consider the vulnerabilities of young individuals when examining this complex topic and provide them with age-appropriate guidance. This research project aims to address gaps in the existing literature and inform strategies for promoting positive online experiences and safeguarding the WB of young people by investigating the association between social media use and affective WB. The review process ...

Social Media and Adolescent Development: Hazards, Pitfalls and Opportunities for Growth

Clinical Social Work Journal, 2014

While most clinicians-even those in their late twenties-did not grow up with contemporary technology, including social networks and cyber media, our adolescent clients have never known a world without it. We therefore often struggle not only to understand the impact of these technological forums on these younger generations, but also whether or not they can be useful tools or destructive agents in the therapeutic process. In this article we will consider research on the impact of Facebook, texting and other cyber technology on psychological health in adolescents. The data is often somewhat contradictory (e.g. one study says that Facebook makes adolescents lonelier while another says that it makes them feel more socially connected), but one finding is consistent: technology seems to amplify emotions not only in adolescents, but also in adults. In this article we will address ways that the technological world can affect adolescent development and what we, as clinicians, can do to ameliorate the negative and support the positive aspects of this sometimes overwhelming but clearly permanent aspect of contemporary life.

The Relationship between Social Media Usage and Mental Well-Being among Young Adults

Pakistan Journal of Medical and Health Sciences, 2022

Background: The use of social media has grown rapidly over the past decennium and a half, however, not much research is conducted on it to identify its correlation with mental well-being and its effects. Aim: To determine the correlation between social media usage and mental well-being in young adults. Study design: Cross Sectional study. Methodology: Data was collected using convenient sampling. This study includes a sample size of 215 young adults, 108 men, and 107 women, from two universities in Lahore, Pakistan, aged between 18-25 years. Two instruments were used in this study to measure the variables, the Social Networking Usage questionnaire, and Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-being Scale. Data was evaluated by using SPSS version 24. Pearson's correlation and independent sample t-test were applied with p-value < 0.05 as significant. Results: Findings indicated a significant positive relationship between all dimensions of social media usage including academic, socialization, entertainment, and information. High mean scores indicated that research participants mostly use social media for academic purposes. There was not a statistically significant relationship that could be seen between social media usage and mental well-being. Gender differences were found only related to mental well-being where men scored high as compared to women with a significance of 0.01 level. Practical Implication: Present study results raised the idea of examining other mediating or moderating factors between the connection between social media platforms usage and mental well-being. Not only the time but the content and purpose of social media should also be considered while establishing the direction of the relationship. Conclusion: It was concluded that young adults' use of social media has not an inverse connection with mental health, and they mostly use it for academic purposes. However, men and women are different on the mental well-being scale, and men with high well-being reported for the present sample.

Exploring social media and its effects on adolescents: A critique

International Journal of Applied Research

The study of social media is a relatively new area, yet it is quickly growing in importance. There are important advantages and disadvantages to be considered when discussing the influence of social media on adolescents. Platforms like TikTok, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and Snapchat, can be lifesavers for adolescents who feel alone or stigmatized. Social media also made youngsters feel more connected and less lonely throughout the pandemic. However, the influence of social media on adolescents can be considered deleterious to their mental health. Social media and depression in adolescents are inextricably intertwined. Additionally, excessive usage of the applications exposes young people to cyberbullying, concerns with their bodies, and computer addiction, and reduces the amount of time they spend engaging in healthy, outside activities. Physical communication is therefore still the most effective form of communication for sharing concerns with others, regardless of how advanced we get. This paper's primary goal is to investigate the many ways in which social media may affect adolescents. To that end, several research publications have been evaluated and summarised and 10 respondents were interviewed concerning their views regarding social media usage.

Girls, more than boys seek comfort on social media when they are worried. Teens are so emotionally invested in social media that a fifth of secondary school pupil will wake up at night and log on(2). The report found that there was a " clear association " between longer time spent on social websites and the incidence of mental health problems. As per children wellbeing study also there is clear association between number of hours a child spent on social networking sites and children " difficulties score "-the official measure for the prevalence of mental health issues in children(3)
