Cluster randomised trial of the effects of timing and duration of early childhood interventions in Odisha – India: Study protocol

Introduction Many children in developing countries grow up in unstimulating environments, leading to deficiencies in early years' developmental outcomes, particularly cognition and language. Interventions to improve parenting in the first 3 years of life have a clear impact on these outcomes, but the sustainability of effects is mixed, particularly for scalable interventions. There is little evidence of the effect of following-up an early life intervention with another one immediately afterwards. The objective of this study is to help fill this gap. Methods and Analysis This study is a cluster randomized control trial (CRCT) to assess the effects of improvements in preschool quality, following directly after a separate CRCT assessing a stimulation and nutritional educational intervention (AEA RCT Registry: 0000958). Using the same sample as the original study (N=2170), each of the original 4 study arms are randomly divided into treatment and control forming 8 study arms. Primary outcomes are cognition, language and school readiness measured using subscales of the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence test IV for cognition and language and the Daberon-2 screening for school readiness. Secondary outcomes include the Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire for behavioural problems and pro-social behaviour, preschool quality, indicators of compliance, such as enrolment and attendance in Anganwadi Centres, as well as child growth. We will estimate unadjusted and adjusted intent-to-treat effects using semi-parametric estimators. We will also consider differences by gender of the subject child and the education of the mother/principal caregiver.

Challenges and Assets for Promoting Early Childhood Development in Indonesia: A Health Statistics Review from a Community Health Perspective

Background: Although early childhood development is important, there are limited health statistics reviews related to the early childhood development in Indonesia. This study organized statistical health information across 33 Indonesian provinces to assess ongoing challenges and existing assets for improving early childhood development. Information about early childhood development in Indonesia between 2007 and 2013 was obtained through data supplied by the Indonesian Ministry of Health and the Indonesian Central Bureau of Statistics. Methods: The information collected was organized into five domains of early childhood development: health, nutrition, responsive care giving, early learning, and security and safety. IntroductionMore than 40% of children under 5 years of age in low-income and middle-income countries are at risk of not reaching their developmental potential. The international Guide for Monitoring Child Development (GMCD) early intervention package is a comprehensive programme to address developmental difficulties using an individualised intervention plan for young children and their families.
