Experiential learning with live case studies

International Journal of Teaching and Case Studies, 2020

The purpose of this mixed method study is to explore the opinions of students, lecturers, and founders/CEOs about the use of live case study firms as a learning method using the theoretical framework of Kolb's experiential learning cycle. The findings suggest that the use of live case study firms in strategic management classes enhances the in-class learning experience, the quality of the group work, and the level of learning outcomes of students, produces high quality and useful output for the live case study firms, and helps a business school to develop future managers for sustainability firms. The findings of this study have a high practical significance for students, the business school, and the live case study firms. This paper also contributes to the existent literature with its constructive perspective of design learning experiences, which puts a higher emphasis on learnability through theoretical and philosophical foundations of experience-based teaching and learning.

2016

Developing and using live case studies, in collaboration with a corporate partner, are an effective means of introducing experiential learning into the classroom and have the added benefits of both further embedding academic understanding and developing generic skills and competencies for the millennial generation. Marketing Education Review, 2013

The use of live cases in marketing teaching has been suggested as a way to provide students with interesting and relevant course work while collaborating on live case exercises also provides industry partners with valuable new ideas for innovation and development. When properly conducted, live cases can also be used for conducting research by the course instructors. Our study shows how these three distinct levels of teaching, industry collaboration, and research can be managed simultaneously to produce benefits for all parties by introducing and testing a novel framework to be used by marketing instructors in their course work.

The Application of the Learning Sciences to the Design of Business Education Cases

Case Studies as a Teaching Tool in Management Education

Business education is education for practice and thus, requires a systematic and integrative approach that will guide students toward becoming reflective practitioners. Case-based education is an important tool that can provide the educational experiences that produce effective practitioners but only if its use is guided by a sound theoretical and research based framework. Research and theory from the learning sciences can guide case-based instructional practices. This chapter will provide a framework for the design of case-based instruction that incorporates teaching and learning affordances derived from the theory of situated learning and cognition. If the educational goal is to produce business practitioners with the skills and knowledge necessary to operate successfully in today's global business environment, business education needs to be prepared to incorporate theoretical perspectives derived from learning sciences research into case-based education.
