Tourism Potential of Onicha Igboeze Community New Yam Festival, Ebonyi State, Nigeria

The study was carried out to assess tourism potential of Onicha Igboeze community New Yam Festival. Six (6) villages, 12 key informants and 60 ordinary residents were selected for the study through multi-stage stratified random sampling technique. Primary data were collected through the use of semi-structured questionnaire, interview schedules and Focus Group Discussions. Secondary information was sourced from historic records and documentaries on the subject matter. Data were analyzed using mean scores from 4-point Likert-Type scale and Explanatory Factor Analysis. Historical and other descriptive information were presented in documentary form. Results showed that the interplay of the rural ambience of Onitcha Igboeze community, the recreational content and structure of her New Yam Festival, and the community's positive socio-cultural values provide adequate response to recreational needs of a modern urbanized society. FACILITIES AVAILABILITY AND TOURISTS’ SATISFACTION OF CULTURAL FESTIVALS IN EKITI STATE, NIGERIA
Tourism can be described as a form of nomadism that characterized homosapiens, which is both normal and under the right conditions, pleasurable. Furthermore, it was emphasized that tourism is associated with travelling away from one's home for twenty four (24) hours, using one's leisure time to travel and taking holidays and travelling for business. Being a worldwide phenomenon, it accounts for 10.3% of world gross domestic product, had a turnover of US$6,477.2 billion and supported 234 million jobs (8.7% of total world employment) amidst several challenges. Cultural Festival has been an important element of tourism, it has not been attended to like ecotourism sites, and this has resulted in low facilities and infrastructural attendance in this regions. Likewise, the non-availability of these facilities due to negligence has resulted in low patronage of cultural sites, this paper thus examined the level of satisfaction of tourists and the influx of tourists in relation to the facilities available at various selected cultural festivals in Ekiti State, Nigeria. The objectives of the study are to examine the state of development of these cultural tourism sites and its impact on the general well-being of tourists and also to look into the problems militating against the sustainability of these festivals and ways forward for better tourists' experiences. The Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs and Demand/Supply theory serve as the basis of its theoretical underpinning. The study relied on both primary and secondary data, and the research work was carried out in three settlements using one festival each as case studies. The instrumentation for the study is the questionnaire thus one hundred and eighty (180) questionnaires were administered on target population. The administration of questionnaires was based on 2013 projected population. Presentation of data was carried out using statistical tables and the multiple-regression statistical method of analysis was used to test for the relationship that existed between available facilities in host settlement of selected festivals/cultural tourism attractions and overall tourists' satisfaction. The independent variables used were available facilities present at the host communities while the dependent variable is the overall satisfaction for tourists. The study revealed that the facilities in the study area were not enough to satisfy the tourists. Also, it was revealed that most of the tourists are local tourists i.e. form within the study area. In the regression analysis, it was revealed that there is a positive relationship between available facilities in cultural festivals and overall tourists' satisfaction thus, an improvement in the available facilities will surely lead to increase in the level of tourists' satisfaction which will in turn increase the rate of patronage of cultural tourism in the study area. The study recommends that government at all level should be involved fully in the provision of facilities in the study area. It also recommends the use of media in advertisement of these sites as it will help in making these sites known not only locally but also internationally.

This study examines residents' perception of Carnival Calabar festival and tourism development in Calabar City, Nigeria. It intends to understand whether tourism development of the festival is commonly perceived as positive or negative in City. A survey research technique was utilized for this study; thus, a total 200 usable questionnaires were administered to the respondents in Calabar municipality. The findings revealed that, majority of residents have positive attitude about tourism. Findings revealed that pride in heritage, unification of the host community and employment opportunities associated to the event are the primary factors that influence tourism development of the festival. However, regardless of the general positive attitude accorded to tourism development of the festival, there are varying opinions by the residents on tourism influence in Calabar City. These opinions are largely influenced by the perceived benefits from tourism related activities. The results of this study contribute to part of the data for the management and sustainable development of Carnival Calabar festival for tourism in Cross Rives State.
FESTIVITIES AND THE TOURISM DESTINATION ATTRACTIVENESS OF AKWA IBOM STATE, NIGERIA

ARTICLE INFO ABSTRACT This study set out to investigate the level of influence that Festivals and events have on tourism destination attractiveness of Akwa Ibom State. Primary data were collected with the use of interview schedule. A sample of 296 respondents, who were both domestic and foreign tourists visiting the states between the months of October to December 2017 made up our sample frame. The researcher interviewed selected tourists met at hotels, the Beaches, events and recreational facilities. The statements from the visitors were recorded on a writing pad and on a recording device (smart-phone)and analyzed by themes. Findings from the study revealed that most tourists showed interest in festivities hosted at the destination because the festivities were entertaining and had a lot of traditional and cultural significance. It was recommended that events and festivals that especially have cultural and traditional significance to the states should be promoted widely, as they have a way of exposing the hospitable nature of the people at the destinations and showcasing the indigenous tangible products of the States.
TOURISM AND SERVICE DELIVERY IN CALABAR METROPOLIS, CROSS RIVER STATE, NIGERIA
The purpose of this study was to determine how service delivery influence tourism establishments in Calabar Metropolis, Cross River State. To achieve this, two hypotheses were formulated and tested in the study. The survey research design was adopted for the study. A sample of 100 respondents was accidentally selected for the study. " structured questionnaire titled Tourism and Service Delivery Questionnairee (TSDQ) was utilized for the study after being subjected to validation by three experts in the relevant field. The reliability was established through split-half and Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient method with a coefficient value of 0.88. The independent t-test analysis was adopted in testing the hypotheses at .05 level of significance. From the results of the analysis, the findings revealed that there is significant difference in the mean rating of male and female tourists on accommodation comfort and security services of tourism establishments in Calabar Metropolis. Based on the findings of the study, recommendations were made.

Recreation is considered as activity through which leisure may be experienced and enjoyed but it is also seen as a social institution, socially organized for social purposes and it is assumed to bring personal and social benefits. It is also a means to an end and can be rationally justified tied historically to certain types of activities, such as outdoor pursuits, hobbies, continuing education and activities with a service orientation. The hospitality industry includes many businesses that fall under this large umbrella, such as hotels, motels, resorts, restaurants and theme parks. While hospitality services refer to the activity or business of providing ancillary services to guests in hotels, restaurants, bars, etc and is made up of two services; accommodation and food, beverage services sectors together constitute the hospitality industry. There is a direct link between leisure recreation in hospitality service delivery system; as a multi-use tool to be used by hospitality to achieve a wide range of goals such as additional revenue-generation and a marketing strategy to bring in customers. The main objectives of this paper therefore was to demonstrate how leveraging leisure, recreation activities as additional services in hospitality will increase visitation, extension of length of stay, boost revenue and enhance the destination's reputation. The paper concludes, that leisure recreation contributes to the overall growth of the hospitality industry services and for leisure recreation to be a revenue-generating activities, the recreation program must be totally responsive to the interests of the customers. The paper recommends that Hospitality services must focus on the guest experience and stage memorable experiences that stimulate his returned.

USING FESTIVALS IN PROMOTING TOURISM – A CASE OF “ABOAKYER” AND “BAKATUE” IN THE CENTRAL REGION OF GHANA N. Imbeah, Lecturer, Dept of Tourism Takoradi Polytechnic, Ghana Abstract Traditional festivals have as a major element entertainment and recreation (Bame, 1991), which constitute tourism hallmark events. However, in Ghana, the extent of use of festivals for tourism promotion is not widely explored. Reasons for festival tourists for attending festivals are unexplored in Ghana. The study therefore seeks to find out some characteristics of tourists and motivations of tourists to festivals. Certain hypotheses were assumed about the origin of tourist and the use of related services. Two models were considered in the work. Questionnaires, interview guides and convenience sampling were used and a chi-square test of independence was used to test the hypotheses at 95% significance level. The findings of the research include the following; a) that festival tourists can actively participate in festivals, b) the quest to learn the culture of the festival towns was the most popular motive for attending festivals and c) both festival towns have no strong co-operation between the District Assemblies and the Traditional Councils in the organization of festivals.

This study set out to investigate the level of influences that Hospitality of the people at the tourism destination had on tourism destination attractiveness of Akwa Ibom State. Primary data were collected with the use of Questionnaire. A sample of 296 respondents, who were both domestic and foreign tourists visiting the state, made up our sample frame. The responses from the copies of questionnaire retrieved were analysed using a linear regression analysis. It was found that hospitality of the people at the tourism destination had a significant positive relationship on tourism destination attractiveness of Akwa Ibom State. It was concluded that tourists signified great importance on the hospitality of the people at the destination, and was a predictor of the tourism destinations’ attractiveness of the state. It was recommended that the hospitable nature of the people at the destination could become a selling point of the destination, thus the tourism plan of the state should be designed to include basic orientations about the benefits of tourism to the State and their people

The tourism industry has been touted to have huge significant impact on the social and economic growth of local people across the world. This study is carried out to examine the role of the tourism industry on sustenance of socio-cultural development in Cross River State, Nigeria. Primary and secondary sources of data were employed to elicit information for the study. The primary sources comprised of the use of questionnaire survey, interview sessions and direct field observation while the secondary sources involved the use of documented information published in articles, books and in registry of tourist outfits within the study locations. The study observed that some socio-cultural values of the people (traditional marriages, traditional building pattern, family income, traditional landscape design, art and crafts) were positively influenced by interaction of tourists' with the host communities while other values (traditional belief system, traditional religious worship, native food, local drinks, traditional dress style, traditional legal system, level of promiscuity) were negatively affected by the interaction between the tourists and the local residents'. The study also observed that most of the tourists' that visited the region got awareness of the attractions through the social media (38%), electronic media (22%), friends and family (16%), internet (10%), print media (10%) and sign posts (4%). Based on these findings, the study recommends that more cultural activities, better marketing and promotional strategies should be adopted to ensure more visitors and tourists visits to the region throughout the year.
