Character strengths and psychological vulnerability: The mediating role of resilience (original) (raw)

The Proactive-Reactive Resilience as a Mediational Variable Between the Character Strength and the Flourishing in Undergraduate Students

Frontiers in Psychology, 2022

The aim of this research was to delimit the predictive and mediational model of resilience between character strengths to predict flourishing, in a sample of undergraduate students. After signing their informed consent, 642 university students completed three validated scales (i.e., character strengths, resilience, and flourishing). Using an ex post facto design, regression, structural modeling, and mediation analyses were carried out, in order to construct a multi-causal predictive model. Results indicated a consistent predictive direct effect of character strengths on resilience and flourishing and of resilience on flourishing. As hypothesized, resilience also showed a mediating effect on the relationship between character strengths and flourishing. Additionally, results also revealed that the reactive and proactive factors of resilience were explained by different character strengths (e.g., emotional strength/cognitive, interpersonal strengths), reinforcing the idea that the two directions are complementary and necessary. Finally, several implications were established for the practice of positive psychology.

The standardized questionnaires of the Big Five Personality Test and Ego Resilience Scale were used as the tool of the study. The data was collected using both the questionnaires and interpreted using an Independent sample t-...

Character Strengths in Adults and Adolescents: Their Measurement and Association with Well-Being

2020

Character strengths are assessed in adults and adolescents using different measurements. However, a comparison of character strengths across age groups requires the equivalence of these measurements. The present study examined the comparability of the two questionnaires most frequently used in research: The VIA Inventory of Strengths (VIA-IS) for adults and the VIA Inventory of Strengths for Youth (VIA-Youth). A sample of N=170 high-school students in the age of about 18 years and up to two informants (N=164 mostly parents; N=156 mostly friends and partners) completed both character strengths questionnaires and several well-being questionnaires. The psychometric characteristics and the correlations with well-being scales were examined once exclusively on the basis of self-rating and once on the basis of combined self- and informant-ratings. Substantial differences between the questionnaires were found in each of the criteria examined (e.g., identification of signature strengths, or ...

Investigation of High School Students' Resiliency Perception in terms of Some Variables *

2013

The purpose of this study is to examine the resilience of high school students in Turkey, and to determine the relationships between the student resiliency and some protective factors such as school climate, teacher atti- tudes and behaviors, family and peer support according to the student opinions. By using 509 students randomly selected from 24 general and Anatolian high schools from central districts of Ankara, it was found that students' perception of sociability and communication skill and determination were higher than the self-efficacy, hope and problem solving skills which were important components of resiliency. There were significant correlations be- tween students' resiliency perceptions and gender, grade level, fathers' educational level, family income, grade point avarege and absenteeism of those students. Grade point avarege and absenteeism were found to be the most important demographic variables that predict student resiliency. Additionally results indic...

Resilience in relation to personality and intelligence

International Journal of Methods in Psychiatric Research, 2005

Resilience is a construct of increasing interest, but validated scales measuring resilience factors among adults are scarce. Here, a scale named the Resilience Scale for Adults (RSA) was crossvalidated and compared with measures of personality (Big Five/5PFs), cognitive abilities (Raven's Advanced Matrices, Vocabulary, Number series), and social intelligence (TSIS). All measures were given to 482 applicants for the military college.

A PSYCHOMETRTC ASSESSMENT OF THE SELF-REPORTED YOUTH RESILIENCY: ASSESSING DEVELOPMENTAL STRENGTHS QUESTIONNAIRE I,'

Summay.-As opposed to the problem-based approach of dealing with specific at-risk behaviors, the objective of the self-reported Youth Resiliency: Assessing Developmental Strengths questionnaire is to provide a statistically sound and research-based approach to understanding the factors that contribute to the development of adolescent resiliency. The study of protective factors, or the more recent attempts at conceptualizing the of iadilidual resikenq, has been in rhc social 2nd health sciences research for decades. In this study, the psychometric characteristics of the Youth Resiliency questionnaire, based on a large urban sample of Grades 7 to 9 adolescents (N=2,291), arc presented. The findings from this study present a potential framework for understanding the construct and function of resiliency as it pertains to both the extrinsic and intrinsic factors of adolescent development.

The Relationship between Personality Traits and Psychological Resilience among the Caribbean Adolescents

International Journal of Psychological Studies, 2010

This cross-sectional study investigated the relationships between the big five personality traits: (conscientiousness, agreeableness, neuroticism, openness to experience, extraversion) and psychological resilience among 397 Caribbean secondary school adolescents. Pearson Product Moment Correlation and Stepwise Multiple Regressions were conducted to analyse the data. Results revealed statistically significant positive relationships between the personality traits (conscientiousness, agreeableness, openness to experience, extraversion) and psychological resilience, while neuroticism was negatively correlated with psychological resilience. The personality traits also jointly contributed 32% (R square = 0.324) of the variance being accounted for in psychological resilience and this was found to be statistically significant with conscientiousness being the best predictor while agreeableness, neuroticism and openness to experience were other significant predictors, however, extraversion did not contribute significantly. These results are discussed in the light of healthy personality beefing up and promoting adolescents' psychological resilience.

Impact of Resilience on Psychological Well-Being

Journal of Intellectual Disability - Diagnosis and Treatment, 2022

Background: The issue of the individual's psychological well-being is one of the most interesting and relevant in psychology. Its study has implications not only for theoretical but also for many of the present practical challenges. This study explores predictors of psychological well-being, one of which is resilience. Objective: The purpose of the study is to analyse psychological well-being predictors and prove that resilience is one of its important predictors. Methods: To achieve the aim, a theoretical grounding of the key concepts was made, and an empirical study was carried out. The following techniques were used: the Ryff Scales of Psychological Well-Being, the Freiburg Personality Inventory and the Maddi's Hardiness Survey. Furthermore, at the empirical level, the characteristics of resilience among different age groups were recorded. Results: The study presents the results of a survey involving 150 people of different ages related to the profession of consulting psychologists. Furthermore, the study identified the following predictors of psychological well-being: resilience, femininity/masculinity, positive attitudes, emotional lability, irritability, and aggression. Conclusions: Based on the study of psychological and pedagogical literature and the study findings, it has been concluded that resilience should be considered a mechanism for achieving psychological well-being. The theoretical analysis described the concepts of "psychological well-being" and "resilience", providing their characteristics and factors.

The development and validation of a new resilience inventory based on inner strength

Scientific Reports

There are a number of resilience scales with good psychometric properties. However, the various scales differ in their item content in accordance with the model of resilience the developer had in mind. Culture is one of the reasons for the difference. Thailand, one of the Buddhist cultures, has a different view on resilience compared with Western culture. This study aimed to develop and validate a resilience inventory created based on the inner strength concept using a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and Rasch measurement model. The resilience inventory (RI) was developed by creating new items representing inner strengths attributed to resilience. The inner strength was adopted to form the resilience construct, including perseverance, wisdom, patience, mindfulness, loving-kindness and equanimity. In addition, face and content validity were examined by experts in both mental health and Buddhism. The final RI comprised nine items with a 5-point Likert-type scale. The RI-9 was compl...
