CAMPUS SEXUAL ASSAULT AND THE LEGAL SOLUTION IN NIGERIAN UNIVERSITIES.

This study investigates the extent and trend of campus sexual assault among undergraduates of tertiary institutions in Nigeria. Descriptive research design was used. The population consists of all female undergraduates in South West Geo-political Zoneof Nigeria. A sample of 500 female undergraduates was drawn using simple random sampling techniques. The findings revealed that campus sexual assault perpetrated by lecturersiscommon; unfortunately, sexual harassers often face little punishments from the schools? judicial systems, even when the perpetrator is not a first offender. The study recommendsthe legal solution to drastically reduced campus sexual assault, if its elimination will be possible in the short-time.

Exploring Sexual Assault Incidences at a Public University in Kitwe, Zambia

The study investigates the prevalence of sexual assault at a public university in Kitwe to determine its nature and establish available reporting mechanisms for students. The study used a mixed-method approach rooted in the pragmatic paradigm to collect primary data. The participants included 49 students randomly selected from within the university community. Online questionnaires were randomly distributed to collect data. The study found that the majority of the participants (61.2%) had been victims of sexual assault before. It was further found that the leading nature of the sexual assault was unwanted touching at 66.7%, followed by unwanted kissing at 33.3%. Both attempted Rape and Rape stood at 14.3%. The study also revealed that most of the perpetrators were friends. Finally, the study showed that only 14.3% of the cases were reported while 85.7% were not. It can be concluded that Sexual assault is prevalent in higher institutions of learning. And that unwanted touching and kissing by perpetrators known to the victims are the most common forms of sexual assault. Given the statistics about reporting, a university sexual harassment policy that covers all forms of sexual-related matters including assault is needed. To deter the would-be assaulters and protect the potential victims, procedures and penalties with easily accessible channels for reporting sexual assault cases need to be instituted.

Les etudiantes sur le campus, particulierement celles qui sont handicapees et qui frequentent l’universite Egerton (UE), le campus Njoro continuent a subir des agressions multiples dont la violence physique, sexuelle et psychologique et des sevices ou gestes envers les hommes et les femmes de la part des collegues, des professeurs, des membres de la communaute tout autant que des aidants. Cette etude documente les causes, les formes et les impacts et identifie une action pour remedier a cette situation et elabore des strategies pour arreter cette violence. Cette etude sera menee par « Ground Theory » selon sa methodologie preferee.
Communicating About Sexual Violence on Campus: A University Case Study

South African universities are in the midst of highly visible struggles around decolonisation. Over the past two years, these struggles have foregrounded racialised, classed, gendered and other forms of exclusion. These are being challenged both by black academic staff as well as by black students. Most visibly and deeply connected, have been the challenges to the ways in which universities, as particular types of institutions, have dealt with sexual violence and harassment of its womxn 1 students. In this context we ask how the University of Cape Town, as one particular case study formally communicates about sexual violence on its campus. In an archival analysis of the university's public communications on sexual violence during 2015 and 2016, we ask what kinds of messages it conveys about violence, victims and perpetrators. We are interested in the ways in which the university positions itself in relation to the issue of sexual violence. The paper finds that the university's institutional discourse on sexual violence produces and reproduces some of the same discourses on sexual violence in both the public and media more broadly.

Sexual violence against female students is a thriving academic vice in tertiary institutions in most countries of the world, Nigeria inclusive. When a 22-year-old University of the Western Cape (UWC) female student was stabbed to death by her boyfriend (another student) in her room in the university residence on 25 August 2008, the entire campus was left reeling. Bringing the stark reality of gender-based violence (GBV) so close to home, the tragedy was a powerful reminder of the limits of more than a decade of legislative change, concerted activism, education, consciousness-raising and knowledge production aimed at challenging gender-based power inequalities. Sexual violence against women is a social vice that affects females in diverse forms across clime, race and religion. This manifests through sexual assault, rape, sexual harassment, incest, sexual exploitation, stalking and cyber stalking. Out of all these, sexual assault, rape and sexual harassment of female students by male lecturers are common in the tertiary institutions. There is no doubt that sexual violence is indeed a global problem, but it becomes worrisome when lecturers now demand sex from their female students in return for good grades in their courses.
