Improving profit efficiency in vegetable farming, especially for Spinach, is vital in enhancing income, livelihoods, and nutrition security and reducing the poverty of smallholder farmers, particularly in developing countries like South Africa. Despite the country’s potential, spinach production faces major challenges, including unreliable markets, low adoption of modern production systems, and production inefficiencies that affect farm returns. This has been attributed to a lack of adequate and reliable information to guide producers on measures for improving productivity through cost effective production systems and efficient market systems, eventually leading to profit inefficiency. Therefore, this study sought to assess the profit efficiency of smallholder spinach producers under irrigated agriculture in the Eastern Cape Province, South Africa. The study made use of multi-stratified sampling procedures to select 150 spinach producers under irrigation. The stochastic profit front...

The study examined the comparative economic analysis of irrigated and rainfed spinach (Amaranthus cruentus) production in Minna metropolis, Niger State, Nigeria. Data were obtained from 120 randomly selected farmers using the purposive sampling technique. Production function model was used in the analysis of the data. The result showed that labour and farm size are the significant variables that influence spinach production output under the rainfed condition. On the irrigated scenario, labour, quantity of organic manure and quantity of improved seeds were the variables that influence the output of spinach production. It also revealed that there was over utilization of all the production inputs (i.e. labour, farm size, quantity of organic manure and the quantity of improved seeds) under consideration. Incorporating policy measures of efficient use of production inputs was suggested.

Most (59.05%) of them cultivated an average of 2.54 hectares using personal savings. On their cropping systems, fourteen cropping systems were identified with mixed cropping system accounting for 61.12% of the cropping systems and 83.56% of the total hectares allocation, an indication that mixed ...
Economic Efficiency of Small Scale Farmers in Ogun State, Nigeria
Cassava holds a prominent position as a food and industrial crop in the Nigerian economy. Thus, there are government initiatives to support its mass production for domestic use and export. This study investigated the efficiencies of cassava production in Odeda Local Government of Ogun State. A random sample of 200 cassava producers was taken and subjected to budgetary and stochastic frontier analyses. Results indicated that most of the farmers were male (90%) with more than half (53%) above 50 years of age. Land holding by inheritance (78%) was prevalent. The gross margin and profit were N105, 775 and N95. 738,10 respectively. Cost ratio (1.8) and percentage profit (80%) indicated that cassava farming was profitable in the area. Total variable and labour costs were 91.6% and 68.2% of the total cost respectively. The return to scale was 1.024. Farm size (0.771) and quantity of planting stakes (0.203) significantly (p ≤ 0.01) affected cassava production. Age and farming experience con...
Economic Efficiency Of Leafy Vegetable Production In Oyo State , Nigeria
2011
The economic efficiency of leafy vegetable production in Oyo State, Nigeria was investigated using stochastic frontier production function, which incorporates a model f inefficiency effects. Primary data were collected through the use of structured questionnaires from 120 leafy vegetable farmers randomly selected from four local government areas. Stochastic frontier production function, using maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) was used to analyze the economic efficiency. The MLE results revel that farm size, family labour, hired labour, seed and fertilizer are the major factors influencing gross margin in leafy vegetable production. The efficiency model shows that older farmers and farmers with more extension contacts tend to be less economically efficient in leafy vegetable production. The mean economic efficiency score is 0.42. [Ogunniyi, L.T. Economic Efficiency Of Leafy Vegetable Production In Oyo State, Nigeria. Report and Opinion 2011;3(1):85-91]. Profit Efficiency of Smallholder Soybean Farmers in Tolon District of Northern Region of Ghana
2021
The study aimed to estimate the profit efficiency of soybean producers in the Tolon District of Northern Region of Ghana and identify the sources of inefficiency and production constraints. Data for the study was obtained from 200 smallholder soybean farmers selected using simple random sampling and a structured questionnaire. A translog stochastic profit frontier model was employed to assess profit efficiency and the sources of inefficiency whiles Kendall’s coefficient of concordance was used to rank the production constraints. The results revealed an average profit efficiency of 0.70, indicating a loss of 30% of the potential attainable profit to inefficiency. On the sources of inefficiency, the findings revealed that the combined application of chemical fertilizer and rhizobium inoculant decreased profit inefficiency, whereas application of only chemical fertilizer or rhizobium inoculant increased profit inefficiency. Profit inefficiency also decreased with access to extension, f...
This study investigated profitability and production function of irrigated tomato production among small scale farmers in Niger State. Data used for the study were obtained using structured questionnaires administered to 100 randomly selected irrigated tomato farmers from Kontagora and Wushishi Local Government Areas of the state. Descriptive statistics, gross margin, production function analysis and resource-use efficiencies were used for analysis of the data obtained. The result showed that irrigated tomato production is profitable in the area with net farm income of N85306.92 per hectare. Estimated multiple regression analysis revealed that semi-log regression chosen as the lead equation. The R 2 value was 0.757. Farm size (X 1), quantity of seed (X 4) and agrochemical (X 5) are the significant factors influencing output level of irrigated tomato at 1 % level of probability. Labour is also a significant factor at 5 % level of probability. Estimated efficiency-ratio (r) showed that the resources were not efficiently utilized. Estimated elasticity of factor inputs and return to scale showed that there is increasing return to scale. It was therefore recommended that loans and credit facilities should be provided for irrigated tomato farmers in the area. Similarly, dams should be constructed and irrigation equipments be provided for the farmers in the area to supply water for irrigation of farmland. Also, extension agents should be provided to disseminate research findings to irrigated tomato farmers on modern technology.

This study examined empirically production effi ciency of cassava farms in Osun state of Nigeria using farm level data. The stochastic frontier production and cost function model was used to predict the farm level technical and economic effi ciencies respectively. The predicted technical effi ciency and economic effi ciency are the basis for estimating allocative effi ciency of the farms. Estimated results however, show that cassava farms in the study area exhibit decreasing positive return-to-scale giving the value of return to scale (RTS) of 0.840 obtained from the analysis, meaning that cassava farmers were effi cient in allocating their resources. Additionally, the analysis reveal that predicted effi ciency measure disaggregated into technical (TE), economic (EE) and allocative effi ciency (AE) with a view of examining not only TE but EE and AE when measuring productivity shows that mean TE, EE and AE of 0.903,0.89 and 0.807 were obtained from the analysis respectively meaning t...
Profit Efficiency among Rain-Fed Rice Farmers in Northern Taraba State , Nigeria
Journal of Biology Agriculture and Healthcare, 2015
The study analyzed the profit efficiency of rain-fed rice farmers in Northern zone of Taraba state by collecting data from 156 respondents in 2013. A measure of profit efficiency was provided using stochastic profit frontier and inefficiency model. The results showed that there were high levels of inefficiency in rice production. The mean level of profit efficiency was 59% indicating that 41% of the profit was lost due to a combination of both technical and allocative inefficiencies. The profit inefficiency model showed that age, education, farming experience, household size and access to credit facilities increased the profit efficiency of the respondents. It is therefore, recommended that learning opportunities, farm inputs and credit facilities should be made available to farmers in appropriate time.
