May Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises Be Global Firms? Conceptualization and Competitive Determinants (original) (raw)
Abstract
ABSTRACT This research explores the characteristics, par ticularities and determinants of SMEs operating inmultiple national markets. After contrasting characteristics of large multinational types with those of SMEs identified in the literature, it has been observed that there are two categories ofSMEs that operate outside their home ,country: international and ,globally oriented. The globally oriented SMEs share some characteristics with both multidomestic, global as well as transnational large multinationals, while having their own particularities. The paper proposes a definition, a conceptual framework and conditions for a sustainable value-creation of globally oriented SMEs.
