Covering the environmental issues and global warming in Delta land: A study of three newspapers

This article explores the coverage of environmental issues in the daily newspapers of Bangladesh, a South-Asian country facing the onslaught of global warming because of its low-lying deltaic plains and overpopulation. The results are based on an examination of the content of environmental coverage in three national daily newspapers (two Bangla and one English-language) during June 2007. Drawing on field theory and analytical frames from journalism studies, this study examines the principles of journalistic practices as revealed by the content of these publications. The findings indicate that environmental journalism is a strong subfield in Bangladesh’s media, which constructs its own veracity in ways that reflect the social, economic and political contexts of each publication. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the role of editors in the prioritization of environmental news stories in selected print media in Kenya. When it comes to prioritization of issues in the print media in terms of placement, spatial, and frequency of coverage, the editors' role is vital. This paper was guided by two objectives; 1) to determine the role of editors in the publication of environmental news stories, and 2) to analyze the placement, spatial, and frequency of environmental news stories. The paper was guided by two research questions; 1) what is the role of editors in the publication of environmental stories? 2) In what way do the print media prioritize environmental stories in terms of placement, spatial, and frequency? The study was based on a qualitative research method and used a phenomenology research design. The study use homogenous sampling and the sample size was two environmental editors. Data were collected using in-depth interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis. The study found that indeed editors still play significant roles in the gatekeeping functions. When it comes to prioritization of stories, the study established that in terms of story placement, the two newspapers place most environmental stories on minor pages. When it comes to spatial coverage, the study revealed that environmental stories occupy insignificant spaces in the newspaper. When it comes to frequency of coverage, the study further found that environmental stories are not published frequently in the two leading newspapers in Kenya. The study recommends recommended that this research be replicated in various other newspapers such as the Nairobian, the People Daily, and the Start to learn about the phenomenon of print media coverage of environmental stories and its impact on the audience.

This is a comparative assessment of the difficulties experienced in environmental reporting by environmental journalists in Nigeria and India. The study relied mainly on structured online interviews of twenty working journalists from each country. A survey of 500 respondents from each country was also used in the study to gauge public opinion about environmental reporting in newspapers. The study observed a similar trend in the challenges faced by environmental journalists in both countries. The results showed that environmental journalists in both countries work under some constraints from government agencies and officials, organisations and powerful individuals. Within newspapers organisations, there are internal censorship from newspaper owners and editors. Retraining of environmental journalists to equip them with the science and technicalities of environmental reporting was suggested a way to improve environmental reporting by newspapers.
News Coverage on Environmental Issues: A Study on Print Media of Bangladesh
This research seeks to explore the news coverage of environmental issues in the print media of Bangladesh. Four newspapers in two languages; The Daily Star, The Daily New age in English. The Daily ProthomAlo and The Daily Bangladesh Pratidin in Bengali language were selected as sample. In order to carry out the objectives of the research, qualitative and quantitative methodology were employed. The researcher tries to find the answers to the problem whether Bangladeshi newspapers cover sufficiently environmental issues. Primary data were collected through content analysis. Major content analysis findings were that the selected newspapers do cover environmental issues, though the subject matter did not receive much coverage. Although environmental issues are not covered sufficiently in these four newspapers, it has been investigated that The Daily Star newspaper covered the highest environmental articles by contract to other three newspapers in 2019In ProthomAlo, New Age and Bangladesh Pratidin, environmental issues were not only ignored, but also they were given very small portions of the newspaper and marginalized in relation to their presentation.

The current study is focused to investigate the reporting on the environmental issues and their coverage in Pakistan. The Qualitative content analysis technique is been applied in this research. Direct interviews were held with journalists, it is found that environmental journalists in Pakistan face a number of challenges. Environmental reporting does not rank high among the editorial priorities and newsroom hierarchies across the country. The study concluded that the country going through a state of war and social and political chaos which do not allow for much deliberation of environmental issues. Other than questionable editorials integrity, tensions between governments, corporations and newsrooms have also resulted in serious health and safety threats for journalists.
