Overweight men's motivations and perceived barriers towards weight loss

Objective: To explore motivation and perceived barriers towards weight loss among Danish men. Design: The study was of an explorative nature, using qualitative focus group interviews as a method. Setting: Copenhagen, Denmark. Subjects: Twenty-two overweight men, at the age of 25-44 years and motivated for weight loss, were recruited and distributed into four focus groups. The men were primarily unskilled workers. Overall 13 men participated and each group contained three or four participants. Intervention: The interview guide was partly structured, partly unstructured and the themes of the interviews were motives and perceived barriers towards weight loss. Results: Main barriers for losing weight appeared to be lack of motivation and the perception of the slimming diet. The men had a desire to have a lean appearance and avoid illness, but in all the interviews it appeared that the strongest motive for losing weight was a strong desire to become more effective and a greater asset for one's workplace. Overweight subjects were considered less effective and attractive for the labour market. Conclusion: This study indicates that if men from lower socioeconomic backgrounds are to be motivated to weight loss the focus should not be on leanness and good health but rather on increased effectiveness and performance, and the arena should include the working place. Reasons for wanting to lose weight: different strokes for different folks

We assessed whether treatment seeking overweight and obese people citing differing reasons for wanting to lose weight also differed in psychosocial characteristics thought to impact on weight loss. Dieting motives, self-esteem, body image, number of dieting attempts in the past two years, and the primary reason for wanting to lose weight were assessed in 106 treatment seeking overweight and obese volunteers (mean (SD) body mass index 35.5 (5.7) kg/m 2 ; age 41.9 (10.8) y). Reasons for wanting to lose weight fell into three broad categories, with 35%, 50%, and 15% of the participants citing appearance, health, and mood, respectively. Participants citing health reasons were happier with their appearance than people citing mood or appearance reasons. Participants citing mood reasons had poorer self-image and self-esteem, a greater preoccupation with being overweight, and had attempted to diet more often than people citing appearance or health. The primary reason for overweight people seeking weight loss may reflect psychosocial differences that impact on successful weight loss. Identifying a person's reasons and motives for weight loss may help in tailoring dietary and psychological components of a weight loss program to the individual.

Behavioral Intervention in the Overweight and ObeseEmployee: The Challenge of Promoting Weight Lossand Physical Activity

Effects of gender and employment situation on weight loss and lifestyle modification were assessed in a 3-month intervention study done for overweight and obesity. A total of 384 individuals in Izumo City Japan, participated from 2000 to 2006. Lifestyle modifications were quantitatively evaluated by calculating calories of energy intake and expenditure. Eleven men and 15 women failed to complete the intervention; they were significantly younger in both genders, and the women had a higher rate of employment than the completing group (91 men and 267 women). Intervention induced a weight loss of 1.9 kg for men and 1.6 kg for women, with no significant differences by gender. Significant differences were found in changes in energy intake and expenditure in both genders, but these disappeared after adjusting for weight. There were significant decreases in weight (1.6 kg in unemployed, 2.5 kg in employed) in men. Increases in walking and exercise for the employed were smaller than those for the unemployed. The relationship between changes in weight and energy balance by employment status was independently significant using multiple regression analysis. Employment is associated with difficulty in losing weight due to limited exercise time in behavioral intervention.

Knowledge and Perceptions Among Overweight and Obese Employees About Lifestyle-Related Health Benefit Changes

background We investigated perceptions among overweight and obese state employees about changes to health insurance that were designed to reduce the scope of health benefits for employees who are obese or who smoke. methods Before implementation of health benefit plan changes, 658 state employees who were overweight (ie, those with a body mass index [BMI] of 25-29.9) or obese (ie, those with a BMI of ≥30) enrolled in a weight-loss intervention study were asked about their attitudes and beliefs concerning the new benefit plan changes. results Thirty-one percent of employees with a measured BMI of 40 or greater self-reported a BMI of less than 40, suggesting they were unaware that their current BMI would place them in a higher-risk benefit plan. More than half of all respondents reported that the new benefit changes would motivate them to make behavioral changes, but fewer than half felt confident in their ability to make changes. Respondents with a BMI of 40 or greater were more likely than respondents in lower BMI categories to oppose the new changes focused on obesity (P < .001). Current smokers were more likely than former smokers and nonsmokers to oppose the new benefit changes focused on tobacco use (P < .01). limitations Participants represented a sample of employees enrolled in a weight-loss study, limiting generalizability to the larger population of state employees. conclusions Benefit plan changes that require employees who are obese and smoke to pay more for health care may motivate some, but not all, individuals to change their behaviors. Since confidence to lose weight was lowest among individuals in the highest BMI categories, more-intense intervention options may be needed to achieve desired health behavior changes.

Patients' reasons for weight loss and their relations to clinical weight loss outcomes in a comprehensive lifestyle intervention

Objective: Research suggests that individuals seeking weight loss treatment do so for a variety of reasons. Limited work has explored relations of reasons for weight loss to patient characteristics or to weight loss outcomes. The current study examined these relations. Methods: The sample consisted of 588 patients in a 15-week fee-for-service weight loss programme. Prior to the intervention, patients completed questionnaires including items on reasons for weight loss, demographic characteristics, and a variety of weight-based characteristics. Patients' weight change outcomes were expressed as percent weight loss and also categorized into one of three previously described weight loss trajectories. Results: The results of chi-squared and t-test analyses suggested that endorsement of health concerns, mobility concerns, or another person's recommendation was associated with higher body mass index (BMI) and older age. These reasons were more likely to be endorsed by White patients than Black patients and by male patients than female patients. Endorsement of doctor recommendation was more likely to be seen among Black patients than White patients. There was no significant relation of any weight loss reason with weight loss outcome. Conclusions: While certain reasons for weight loss were more often cited by certain patient groups, no specific reason predicted a better or worse outcome.

Why people engage in a weight loss intervention at their workplace - a stratified case study

Background: The prevalence of obesity has increased significantly worldwide within the last decade. As obesity is recognised as a contributing factor when developing various health threatening chronic diseases, prevention initiatives focusing on weight loss are becoming more important. Because of the time spent at the workplace, workplaces can be optimal arenas for weight loss programs and these programs have been effective to decrease body weight. Thus, reasons for engaging in weight loss interventions needs exploring, in order to engage more workplaces in weight loss interventions. Such information provides important knowledge that may help to inform decisions of municipalities, employers and other public health decision makers, when and if implementing weight loss interventions. The aim of this study was therefore to explore reasons for employee engagement in weight loss projects at the workplace and the incentives a municipality, a manager at a home-care centre, and a project manager have to launch such project. Methods: A stratified case study was conducted. A representative from the municipality, the manager at a home-care centre, the project manager of the weight loss intervention and six health-care workers were interviewed at the end of a one-year weight loss intervention at the workplace. Data were analysed using Systematic Text Condensation. Results: Analysis identified different views and considerations for engaging in a weight loss intervention at the workplace. For the representative of the municipality the possible economical gain of the project was in focus. The project manager and the manager of the home-care centre both reflected mainly on improvement of the healthcare workers health. For the project manager, achieving good scientific results was highlighted as well. However, the employees were influenced by several factors, such as their own health and weight loss, the pressure from the environment and their struggle for recognition. Conclusions: This study concluded that if targeting the increasing worldwide obesity problem through workplace initiated weight loss programs, the sales pitch to managements and employers have to be tailored in order to increase the participation and the motivation for the initiative.

Contributions of weight perceptions to weight loss attempts: Differences by body mass index and gender

Previous studies have consistently observed that women are more likely to perceive themselves as overweight compared to men. Similarly, women are more likely than men to report trying to lose weight. Less is known about the impact that self-perceived weight has on weight loss behaviors of adults and whether this association differs by gender. We conducted a cross-sectional analysis among an employee sample to determine the association of self-perceived weight on evidence-based weight loss behaviors across genders, accounting for body mass index (BMI) and demographic characteristics. Women were more likely than men to consider themselves to be overweight across each BMI category, and were more likely to report attempting to lose weight. However, perceiving oneself to be overweight was a strong correlate for weight loss attempts across both genders. The effect of targeting accuracy of self-perceived weight status in weight loss interventions deserves research attention.

The Effect of Motivational Interviewing on Weight Loss on Obese Males

Background: Obesity is a serious health concern throughout the world. This systematic review aims to see if the use of motivational interviewing provides more successful results in weight loss in males than more traditional weight loss education. Method: An exhaustive literature search was performed using MEDLINE, CINAHL and Web of Science databases using the keywords "motivational interviewing," "obesity," "weight loss," "behavior change," and "male". From here, articles were chosen based on title and then abstracts were reviewed. The articles were then assessed using GRADE criteria. Results: Only two articles that fit the topic and inclusion/exclusion criteria were included in this review. Groeneveld et al study showed a mean loss of 0.9kg (1.98 lbs) in the participants in the intervention group who received MI, versus a mean gain of 0.9kg (1.98 lbs) in the control group who did not receive MI. It is apparent in this study that motivational interviewing did have statistically significant outcomes on weight loss when compared to more traditional weight loss education, p < 0.05. Rocha-Goldberg et al study showed that after the six week study, participants did show a mean decrease in weight of 2.9lbs. Although in this pilot study, there was no control group to measure the intervention group against. Conclusion: Motivational interviewing does have statistically significant results on weight loss in adult males.

Weight loss goals and treatment outcomes among overweight men and women enrolled in a weight loss trial

Participants in weight loss programs typically set unrealistically high weight loss goals that some believe are detrimental to success. This study examined outcomes associated with goal and ideal body mass index (BMI). Participants (N ¼ 1801) were enrolled in a weight loss trial comprised of low-intensity mail or telephone interventions vs usual care. Goal and ideal weight losses were assessed by asking participants how many pounds they expect to lose in the program (goal) and how much they would like to weigh (ideal). Goal and ideal weight losses were unrealistically high (men: À16 and À19%, women: À21 and À27%). For women, less realistic goals were associated with greater weight loss at 24 months. Goals were not associated with participation or weight loss for men. Results are more supportive of the idea that higher goals motivate women to lose weight than of the hypothesis that high goals undermine effort.
