Does Artificial Intelligence help Journalists: A Boon or Bane

2023

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is used in our day-today life. AI for journalism is a reality. Just like other vital aspects of our life, AI has also entered the world of journalism. Many reputed news organizations have adopted AI in journalism to perform various newsroom tasks. In today's digital world, several technologies are powering journalism. One such technology that is transforming the journalism field is artificial intelligence. Accuracy is a core value of journalism. With AI and machine learning systems, there's a statistical element of uncertainty which means it's impossible to guarantee 100 percent accuracy. AI tools such as OpenAI's ChatGPT, Microsoft's Bing chatbot, and Google's Bard have been subject to debate now. AI tools have the potential to assist in a variety of tasks, such as scraping PDF files, writing code, and translating languages. AI can be a helpful tool for journalism students and media researchers. A main concern among computational journalists is that AI sometimes hallucinates data. This review paper highlights how artificial intelligence can help journalists.

Perspectives to address artificial intelligence in journalism teaching. A review of research and teaching experiences

Revista Latina de Comunicación Social, 2022

Introduction: In a context where media are increasingly using artificial intelligence (Neuman, 2021), and where this technology is absent in bachelor’s and master’s degrees in communication in Spain (Sanchez García; Calvo Barbero; Díez Gracia, 2021; Ufarte; Calvo; Murcia, 2020; Ufarte; Fieiras; Tuñez, 2020). Methodology: We have located research projects and international teaching experiencesaddressing artificial intelligence and introducing it within journalism education. In addition, during the year 2021, we have participated in six national and international academic events addressing artificial intelligence within three areas of the field of communication: research, professional context, and university teaching. Results: The insights, the projects, and teaching initiatives obtained approach artificial intelligence fundamentally, from two angles, a critical perspective that pays attention to the social consequences of its use in the media context and an applied perspective aiming to train journalism students fundamentally in three competences: data collection and processing, automated content creation and content verification. Conclusions: Being scarce, the research and teaching initiatives available, they provide ways to introduce artificial intelligence in the curriculum of the degrees and masters in journalism and communication, from a critical perspective that taking into account what the media does, assumes the formative challenges derived from the use and extension of this technology.

It has also created a need for a specialised understanding of said available tools.

Robot Journalism as an Example of Artificial Intelligence in Communication Studies

DIGITAL FUTURE, 2021

Context, convey, message, communicate, communication.... Being applied communicators obliges us to examine each part of the communication process from different perspectives. At this point, the message and its carriers have always played the leading role. In my first book, Yeni Medya ve Dokunmatik Toplum, I critically evaluated how digital communication tools transform society and how smartphones we use as tools turn into main goals. We can now divide the world into pre-pandemic and post-pandemic periods. Before the pandemic, we were making suggestions such as we should reduce the use of technology and even apply a digital detox. We were constantly under- lining the need for digital minimalism and technology literacy. The concept of digital capitalism, which progressed rather slowly before the pandemic, gained momentum with the advent of the pandemic. By using almost all digital com- munication channels, we have been digitalized in many areas from economy to education, and to health. We were able to survive with digital communication opportunities and increased the problems that we thought we should reduce by using them even more.

Artificial Intelligence in Journalism: An Automated News Provider

2024

The purposes of this article are to examine (1) how Narrativa OÜan automated news provider with headquarters both in Spain and the United States-works from a business point of view, (2) how their managers and technologists perceive and relate to journalism, and (3) how their technology operates in newswork. Unlike countries like the United States, where Narrativa plans to expand in the short and medium term, the company's implementation of artificial intelligence technologies in Spain is still low despite of being the only provider with clients in this country at present. This seems more linked to the economic crisis and journalists' lack of knowledge and mistrust than to a low efficacy of the product. The findings lead to reflect on the supposed transforming role of automated service providers in journalism, at least for the time being. They also raise the need to take into greater account that the economic situation and the idiosyncrasies of each country can significantly influence the implementation of artificial intelligence in journalism.

THE END OF THE JOURNALISM PROFESSION: ROBOT JOURNALISM and PROPAGANDA OFFICE

Ufuk Üniversitesi II. Sosyal Bilimler Kongresi, 2023

Throughout history, journalism, like other professions, has evolved with technology. As Karl Marx put it, capitalism cannot exist without continuously reproducing the means of production. There have been significant blows dealt to the journalism profession and press workers throughout the world and Turkey after the 19th century, the second industrial revolution, electrification, and the postfordist economy's spread of flexible production after the 1970s, and in parallel with this, the neo-liberal policies that have spread worldwide since 1980. Another blow to the labour market is artificial intelligence. The rollback of laws protecting press workers, especially in the last two decades with AKP policies, and the policies carried out as if officially declaring war on press workers have caused journalism to become a discredited profession or to turn into civil servants under the government's propaganda ministry. This study will discuss the evolution of the journalism profession in Turkey, the impact of artificial intelligence on this profession and what journalism will become in the future from the perspective of press workers. Press workers and the democratic forces of society, who cannot stand in front of capitalism, which must be limited in order to live humanely, becoming as brutal in recent years as it was in its early years, will discuss how they can form a force against this new stage of the profession, robot journalism. It will be shown that if these press workers fail to take a position against media companies and capitalists, the journalism profession and journalists will become propaganda agents of the state, just like the AKP's pool of media today. In journalism, where artificial intelligence will come into play, one cannot even talk about pens becoming for sale.
