Abstract

The traditional liturgical orientation of offering Mass "ad orientem," toward the liturgical "east" of the altar and apse, has been criticized as reflecting an outmoded theology of sacrifice. I argue that the ancient practice stands on its own merits, apart from the question of sacrifice, in that it expresses the true "movement" of the liturgy.
