The Future and the Challenges of the Indonesian Banking Industry in the Digital Era

This article focuses on researching the IT challenges faced by the Indonesian banking industry in the digital age. The rapid development of technology has provided benefits for the banking sector in integrating technology to meet the demands of its customers. Although, this advantage comes with its challenges, as with the emergence of the fintech (financial technology) industry. This study uses an action research method, which is applied to identify challenges faced by conventional banks and provide solutions to overcome the identified challenges. Based on the analysis, it was found that conventional banks have a gap between their digital products and the expectations of their customers; in which majority of the respondent is engaging in the implementation of open application programming interface (API) to facilitate the digital banking activities of its customers via the software and the web-service product created by the Indonesian conventional banks. The implication is that the IT gap between banking services and their customers must be overcome. For this reason, it is recommended that conventional banks work together in order to meet customer expectations and/or banks can use a customer-centric approach in product development.

The banking industry has experienced an increase in the services that customers can provide due to the emergence of the industrial revolution 4.0, so it has become more innovative. Using this information technology provides innovation in the form of digitizing the banking sector from various sides. This research aims to see how developments occur in the Indonesian banking industry, which has begun to be digitized. This research will be carried out using a qualitative approach and literature study methods. The data obtained came from various research results that discussed the digitalization of the banking sector that occurred in Indonesia. This study found that industries that want to survive need to adopt new technologies to stay ahead or stick with existing conventional systems and then slowly disappear.

Indonesian Islamic rural bank or usually called Bank Pembiayaan Rakyat Syariah (BPRS) conducts business in Indonesia in activities based on sharia principles and providing banking services. The challenging business of BPRS right now is facing the Financial Technology (Fintech) business that grows very fast. Current market conditions request transactions simpler and easier, and the financial industry must be changed to accommodate this condition. To be able to compete with Fintech company, BPRS must be changed to adapt to the customer's needs by implemented Fintech in their business. The study aims to determinant the issues on implementing Fintech for BPRS. This study applies by using the Delphi method combined with the Likert scale. Data was obtained by an in-depth interview with three groups of experts as respondents including BPRS practitioners, Fintech practitioners, and experts. The result of this study shows Fintech is needed by BPRS to simplify the registration process, assess the quality of financing, expand their market share, and adopt ecosystem processes. This study has resulted in BPRS should develop Fintech by their resource, then collaborate with Fintech company on the Fintech area that can't be developed by BPRS.

Integration of Fintech and Islamic Banking in Indonesia: Opportunities and Challenges

This paper is intended to analyze the opportunities and challenges of collaboration between the fintech industry and Islamic banking in Indonesia. This research is a descriptive qualitative study of literature review, by collecting information, identifying problems, and making evaluations. Data analysis using SWOT platform. The results of the study show there are opportunities, that the digitalization system in Indonesia is developing very quickly, so that it can be used as a means to improve services in Islamic banking. In this way, Islamic Bank services can reach remote areas, reduce costs, and increase the Islamic financial inclusion. The biggest challenge is related to regulators. The Indonesian, which is predominantly Muslim, requires definite sharia rules regarding services at several types of fintech, which until now do not have a sharia fatwa. Fintech will continue to develop, or contrary, Islamic fintech may sink and be replaced by other technological innovations.

The purpose of this research is to see the change in operational services of credit submission from conventional to digital through the digital branch. This research used qualitative methods with the development through the IDEF0 framework model. Conventionally, the customers when served by a customer service bank to make a credit submission transaction must take around 2-3 weeks. Usled uticaja digitalnih medija, velikih tehnoloških i promena u potrebama potrošača, banke su izložene digitalnom narušavanju svog poslovnog modela spolja i iznutra, što dovodi do inovacija u proizvodima, uslugama, distributivnim i prodajnim kanalima, poslovnim modelima i organizacionoj kulturi. Sektorske analize ukazuju da će buduća dobit sektora biti preusmerena ka onim finansijskim organizacijama koje uspešno koriste digitalne tehnologije za automatizaciju svojih procesa i kao analitička oruđa, kreiraju nove usluge i vrednosti za klijente koji žele da im banka bude uvek i svuda dostupna i transformišu organizacionu kulturu u agilnu i orijentisanu ka inovacijama.
