A Pragmemic Analysis of Igbo Postproverbials

Igbo proverbs (Ilu Igbo) are linguistic expressions which projects principles with the intent to address diverse social, political, economic and culturally contextual issues that bother on values, morals and the identity of the Igbo people of Eastern Nigeria. Proverbs are handed down to different generations by speech acts of storytelling, conversing, rebuking or admonishing. The researchers carried out a pragmatic analysis of Igbo proverbs as a social practice, to establish their meaning and how its social significance are internalized and continually recreated. Language is central to the process of producing meaning. Using the Theory of Pragmeme by Jacob Mey (2001), the paper evaluates the pragmatic acts, the extent to which some of these proverbs are reformed and doctored, yet, maintain qualities of the Igbo culture while accommodating the identity of the 21st century ideology of the Igbo people. Primary and secondary methods of data collection are adopted. Being a qualitative study, the research randomly selected 12 Igbo proverbs that cut across the five Igbo speaking states of eastern Nigeria. The findings are that Igbo proverbs are essentially custodians of the Igbo cultural identity and orientalism, most proverbs have been moderated to fit the emerging trends in the identity of the Igbo ancestry.

Igbo cultural practices: Changing, dying or dead?, 2023

The Igbos are known to be very adventurous, but as advantageous as this may seem, such movements have affected some Igbo cultural practices. Culture is not only a person's social behaviour or heritage but also their identity. A big problem arises when the cultural traditions of a people are hardly known or used by a generation. Since culture says so much about a group of people, this paper studies some aspects of the Igbo culture, particularly greeting, marriage rites, and naming to ascertain if they are changing, dying, or dead. The objectives of this study are to determine the extent to which these practices are still in use, the benefits of these practices to the Igbo people and the society at large, and how mobility and other factors impact these practices. The study adopts the descriptive survey method in eliciting data. The paper discovers that certain aspects of the cultural practices under investigation are largely, essentially not in use today, primarily because of the influence of urbanization and contact with diverse forms of religion, education, and diverse cultures. This paper reconsiders the practices of greeting, marriage rites, and naming, and questions their role in portraying the Igbo identity and instilling morals and values.

PERSPECTIVES ON THE IGBO: Multidisciplinary Approach

The Igbo in Present Day Nigeria

The study delves into an examination of patterns and trends in Igbo society in the present day Nigeria, with some historical events as illuminating lamp. Of course, historical events effectively influenced the nature of Igbo society in the present times. Such events include the European incursion and concomitant changes in socio-political organisation, nationalist movements, naïve post-independence administration, the Nigeria-Biafra war, attempts at postwar reconstruction, fragmentation of the society, which came in form of state creation and local government reforms among others. There is the need to bring to the fore such knowledge as the lack of it would keep emerging generations bereft of ideas on how to solve similar problems when similar situation presents itself. The foregoing inspired the need for this study. The eclectic method of analysis is employed and the discourse is organised in themes to ensure articulated presentation. It is observed that the Igbo passed through a major phase that has been affecting their status in the affairs of Nigeria. That phase is the Nigeria-Biafra war. However, the war appears to have ignited the self-help attribute of the Igbo as they went on to achieve major feats both as individuals and groups.
