Cashew, a perennial tree well known as „poor man‟s crop‟ is a source of highly priced cashew nuts. India being the leading producer, consumer and second largest exporter of cashew in the world, has a prime position in cashew trade in the world market. But the productivity level of Indian cashew is far less than that of its close competitors viz., Vietnam, Nigeria, Cote de‟Ivoire, Philippines etc. The cashew processing sector in India is one of the largest in the world and has given huge employment to rural people especially the women folk. Some of the cashews processing industries in India are still under unorganized sector. Increasing demand for the nuts has necessitated the increased production. The present review is an attempt made towards understanding the Indian cashew industry in relation to its position in the global market, problems being faced by the cashew industry and the scope in future.
Growth in export performance of Indian cashew
Cashew is one of the most valuable processed nuts on global commodity markets and has the potential to generate employment and revenue for developing countries. India is the largest producer, processor, Exporter and the second largest consumer of cashew kernel in the world and earns a sizeable amount of foreign exchange. Cashew (Anacardium occidentale L.) is among the major edible nuts with increasing demand in the global market. The tree is native to Brazil and first introduced to India and Africa in the 16 th century by Portuguese traders with the intention of afforestation and soil conservation, and gradually expanded throughout the world. Today, it has been widely grown mainly for its nuts to be used as food, medicine, and source of income in most tropical regions with the largest coverage found in Brazil, India, Vietnam, Indonesia, and several countries in West and East Africa. The increasing demand for raw cashew nut from processors has made the crop to be the major source of foreign exchange in most developing countries. However, despite the huge potential to produce Cashew in Ethiopia, only little is known about its current production, potential benefits, and opportunities in Ethiopia, mainly due to lack of knowledge and awareness. Hence, this paper provides an overview of cashew uses, available opportunities for its production in Ethiopia and the way forward.

Cashew has the potential to deliver the sources of income for farmers, empower rural women in the processing sector, make employment opportunities and build foreign exchange through exports. This study was conducted to find out the factors affecting cashew production and to identify the major constraints present in cashew cultivation met by farmers in the Maritimepattu Divisional Secretariat Division in Mullaitivu District of Sri Lanka. It was examined the social characteristics, economic factors, and farming knowledge of cashew cultivation among farmers in the study area. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire administered to 60 respondents selected through a simple random sampling method. Descriptive statistics and multiple linear regressions were used for the data analysis. Results revealed that age and education level significantly (P<0.05) and negatively affected on production while, farming knowledge and participation of training significantly (P<0.05) and positively affect the cashew production and it was found that the mean income from cashew production per acre was LKR 121,848.00 per annum and the average yield of the sample of respondents was 312 kg/ha. Cashew cultivators were constrained by several limitations such as inadequate machineries, severe pest and disease attack, lack of marketing facilities, no reasonable price for fresh cashew apple, poor cashew processing technology and poor storage facilities. Farmers should be trained and educated well in terms of good agronomic practices, and processing technologies to increase the quality and productivity.

In India, cultivation of cashew is confined to Kerala, Karnataka, Goa and Maharashtra along the west coast and Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Orissa and West Bengal along the east coast.
