Critical Analysis of Nusantara Culture-Based Counseling: Professional Counseling Crisis Phenomenon by Counselor

The quality of counselor performance can be seen from the implementation of professional counseling that is complete and effective. On the other side, Indonesian counselors are struggling with Permendikbud No. 111 of 2014, which provides professional services at a ratio that approves a counselor serving 150 students. This makes it necessary for a counseling model that has a simpler, more concise procedure and immediately shows effective results accompanied by a load of cultural awareness in the implementation process. Today, multicultural counseling to be one of the most efficacy and effective helping professionals services in helping counselees achieve positive changes. But, critical question is what makes efficacy and effectiveness of multicultural counseling? The purpose of this study is to explore of the factors affecting the efficacy and effectiveness of multicultural counseling. This study used survey method. The participant included 30 pre-service counselor educators (master’s students) from Department of Guidance and Counseling in Universitas Negeri Jakarta. B etween 1975 and 1995, there was a gradual expansion of research and publications pertaining to multicultural counseling. In an effort to systematize and analyze this burgeoning literature, Joseph Ponterotto, J. Manuel Casas, Lisa Suzuki, and Charlene Alexander (1995) recruited a large team of the leading authorities on multiculturalism to produce the first edition of the Handbook of Multicultural Counseling, which is considered by many scholars to be a classic text in the field. This original edition reported that multiculturalism was a major force in counseling and that the counseling profession's knowledge of and appreciation for multicultural counseling would continue to grow in the future. Since 1995, multicultural and diversity training has spread widely throughout industry and every level of the education system in the United States (Kiselica & Ramsey, 2001). In the mental health professions, a growing awareness that all counseling is, to some extent, multicultural contributed to the emergence and refinement of numerous models of cultural identity development, frameworks for multicultural counseling and training, and instruments to assess multicultural constructs (Kiselica & Ramsey, 2001). In response to these developments and an explosion of new publications on multicultural counseling, Ponterotto, Casas, Suzuki, and Alexander completed a second edition of the Handbook of Multicultural Counseling, which addresses the history, theories, research, and practice of multicultural counseling. The purpose of this article is to review the second edition of The Handbook.

Cultural Study of Counselors and Counselees in Counseling. The purpose of this study is to explain the culture of the counselors and counselees with regard to language, values, stereotypes, social class, ethnicity, gender, age, and lifestyle aspects. This study uses qualitative approach. The cultural descriptions about the counselors' and counselees' perspective towards those aspects were very diverse and varied. Value-laden situation in counselors and counselees relationship greatly affected the success of counseling. The result of the study could be used as additional discourse for the Foundation of Socio-Cultural of Guidance and Counseling, Multicultural Counseling, and Field Study and Practice (KPL) of Guidance and Counseling course.

Multicultural counseling competencies are one of the important aspects to the practice of counselors in order to provide effective counseling services. However, studies of multicultural counseling competencies among counselors in Malaysia are still not sufficient to serve as a referral source. This study aims to identify the level of multicultural counseling competencies as a whole and by domain competence as practiced by counselors in Malaysia. The study also aims to identify the difference levels of multicultural counseling efficiency of the respondents based on gender, level of education, and professional experience in the counseling area. The study consisted of 102 counselors who were randomly selected in Malaysia and served as counselors at the Ministry of Education. In this article, similarities are identified between multicultural counseling competencies and the basic assumptions and methodology of qualitative research. Having an understanding of one's own biases, assumptions, and worldviews possessing knowledge and understanding of the culturally different client's (participant's) worldview; and using appropriate strategies and skills are characteristics that are shared by multicultural counseling and qualitative research. These characteristics are addressed under aspects of qualitative research, namely, selection of the research question; researcher as instrument; relationship between researcher and participants; and data collection, analysis, and validity.
