The Way Forward in Sustainable Construction: Issues and Challenges

http://iaesjournal.com/online/index.php/IJAAS/article/view/1321, 2013

Construction industry is one of the most significant industries that contribute toward socio-economic growth especially to developing countries. The nature of the industry are fragmented, unique and complex which always face chronic problems like time overrun (70% of projects), cost overrun (average 14% of contract cost), and waste generation (approximately 10% of material cost). It is also regarded as one of the largest polluters to our environment. Traditional practices of construction process and management are found unable to control unprecedented challenges including the carbon emission issue. These challenges accent the need for practitioners to rethink and improve the construction process and technology. This shows that the construction industry has a major potential in the advancement of sustainable development by addressing issues related to the economic, social, and environment. By adopting sustainable construction, it can reduce the overall energy use and maximize potential for renewable energy supply, minimize waste, conserve water resources, enhance water quality, incorporate water sensitive design and minimize vulnerability to flooding, minimize polluting emissions to water, air and soil and minimize noise and light pollution.

Obstacle in implementing sustainable construction in construction project

2013

This Sustainable development is defined as development undertaken to avoid the disposal of resources and ensure minimum damage to the environment. In the concept of Sustainable Development, emphasis is given to the balance between human needs with the natural system's ability to provide products and services without destroying the environment. The purpose of this study is to review barriers to implementing sustainable development under construction in Malaysia. This study also determines an effective way to address the problems in development. The results obtained from this study found that there are many problems and obstacles that need to be faced in the implementation of sustainable development such as lack of awareness about green technology, poor in skill of worker an etc.In conclusion, we need to identify and minimize all obstacles in implementing the concept of sustainable development under construction in Malaysia.

Development of Possible Solution to Overcome Factors Influence on Sustainable Construction Process

Civil Engineering Journal

The both of time challenges and technology developments are having influence on changes in the required level of any types of industries and in any country in the world. The importance of construction industry is making this sector need to develop without forgetting the negative impacts of the construction process on environment aspects. The objective of this paper is to identify the factors within negative impacts on sustainable process in construction industries by taking the vision of specialists via questionnaire techniques. The Identified factors has been divided into three groups each group associated with the concepts of integrated sustainable. The study is focused on “required actions” that have been drawn through experts to show the roadmap that will help the contractual parties to start in converting the traditional process on construction to be sustainable process. Through the conclusions can be reached facts that contribute to the adoption of sustainable standards in th...

Sustainability in Construction Sector

the World Commission on Environment and Development has been placed in the center of several studies and practices. Adaptation of environment and energy policies supporting economic development not threatening natural life, in international community makes states, establishments, institutions and business world and non-governmental organizations and other stakeholders force to act at this way. Eco-friendly and smart buildings are the result of sustainable environment policies in construction sector which is widely responsible for consumption of natural resources and for environment pollution. Sustainable constructions called smart buildings or green buildings are hi-tech buildings with their control and automation systems. For this kind of building design, stakeholders such as architects, engineers, landscape architects, product manufacturers, energy consultants, project managers, building users, and local administrators are working together. The identification of potential threats and opportunities by following these technologies, the selection of appropriate technological capabilities for the company and industry, the acquisition of these technologies from internal or external companies and usage of them are required for strategic management of technology. Firms which make investments on research and development acts (R&D) in the construction industry of the future in the world by using strategic technology management and which can make its power sustainable to compete in the global market will be able to find a place for themselves in the market.

A Survey Study on Challenges and Factors Affecting in Adopting Sustainable Construction Methods in Indian Construction Industry

MATEC Web of Conferences

Due to India’s growing urbanization, the building industry is experiencing severe environmental challenges. Demand for residential housing is rising, which causes people to use more energy, resources, and raw materials leading to the rise of the carbon footprint. The environment is significantly impacted by the construction sector. It uses up natural resources and energy reserves, and it contributes significantly to the world’s CO2 emissions. The production of waste, the use of energy and water inefficiently, as well as several other environmental harms, have all been linked to the building sector. The step towards sustainability is getting a good cause due to the extinction of resources and increase of pollution in the environment. As per the sources, the majority of the carbon footprint is produced from cement and cement-related products (Construction Industry). Green Building practices are showing a good impact in the reduction of carbon footprint in the environment from the cons...

SUSTAINABLE CONSTRUCTION-AN INDIAN PERSPECTIVE

2017

Due to rapid urbanization, the use of resources has increased enormously leading to the emissions of Greenhouse gasses (GHG) in the atmosphere. Mainly, the construction industry is the major global exploiter of natural resources. In order to reduce the carbon footprint, it is crucial to consider the embodied energy of the material before use. The global idea of sustainable development in the construction industry is to avoid the depletion of natural resources and develop ecological balance for the present and future generations. Hence, there arises a profound concern to improve the indicators of Sustainable Construction (SC) in terms of Social, Economical, and Environmental, Political, and Institutional aspects. There exists a remarkable scope for the developing countries for implementing the sustainable principles. So, it is important to find the methods, techniques and alternatives for improving the sustainable concept in the urban ecosystem. As a part of the research, this review paper attempts to bring together the current thoughts of available research in the literature and provides the extent of possibilities of developing, implementing and incorporating sustainability in the construction industry.

SUSTAINABLE CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT FOR HOUSING PROJECT, 1st International Conference on Sustainable Urban Design for Liveable Cities (SUDLIC 2014), 11-12 November 2014, Kuala Lumpur

UTM Razak School, 2014

Sustainable construction management bid a supreme scope of opportunities to contribute economic development, environmental stewardship, quality of life and social equality. Sustainability is the critical issue in global urbanization which has a huge impact on the environment. Effective of construction management is becoming increasingly achievement for sustainability in the housing project. During construction period, productivity and efficiency become a key factor in the success of construction project. The most important of these are practices relating to scope management, such as controlling the construction work. This study is investigated the sustainability in construction management for housing project. This study is important because it related to the sustainability of construction management that affects the project success.
