This overview of seven years of research on language learning and teaching in Austria reflects a period of steady growth for the language teaching and learning research community, a development due to a national policy agenda aiming for a stronger research base in teacher education. The target languages of the teaching and learning processes investigated are primarily German, English, French, Italian, Spanish as well as several Slavic languages, reflecting the geographical, sociolinguistic and language policy situation of this increasingly multilingual country. This multilingualism means there are clearly many more first languages (L1s) than only German involved in the learning situations investigated. While all the studies reviewed here illustrate research driven by a combination of local and global concerns in connection with different theoretical frameworks, some specific clusters of research interest emerge. Approaches of Language teaching

The topic of this diploma thesis is the comparison of Austrian and Spanish ELT textbooks in respect to grammar teaching. In the first part of this paper, approaches and methods in foreign language teaching are introduced and criteria relevant for the analysis of grammar in ELT textbooks are derived from them. Further, a number of additional criteria analyzing grammar at a more general level are included in the analysis of this paper as well. For the textbook analysis, which is presented in the second part of this paper, two ELT textbooks written for the Austrian market and two ELT textbooks written for the Spanish market have been chosen. It will be analyzed if the four ELT textbooks follow the principles of one single approach or method or of more than one approach or method to language teaching. Further, it will be analyzed to what extent the ELT textbooks adhere to these principles and if the recommendations made in the Austrian curriculum concerning the teaching of foreign languages are fulfilled in the ELT textbooks. Finally, it will be analyzed if there are any differences in terms of grammar teaching between the Austrian and the Spanish ELT textbooks analyzed in this paper.

Current trends in the teaching of foreign languages arising from the Common European Reference Framework for languages aim to increase the quality of communication among the European citizens of different language and cultural backgrounds. Moreover, they attempt to offer a wide range of methodological recommendations as to how to achieve this goal. Therefore, the purpose of the presentation is to discuss recent trends in the teaching of foreign languages with a special focus on the approaches which help to improve the quality of learning and which motivate a learner to be more independent and responsible on one hand, and more collaborative on the other.

Research in mainstream mixed-age (M-A) classrooms suggests benefits for both younger and older learners. Although M-A is increasing in L2 classrooms, research is lacking. Moreover, studies on peer-interactions within M-A groups/pairs in L2 contexts are scarce. The current study investigated M-A pair work of twenty young adolescent English L2 learners of three M-A secondary school classrooms in Germany. Learners were organized into ten M-A pairs and worked together on 10 regular classroom tasks. After the unit of work, individual interviews were conducted in order to elicit learners’ perceptions of their interactions. Audio-recordings of their interactions were analyzed for Language Related Episodes (LREs) in order to explore opportunities for learning created during these interactions and the roles played by individual learners within these pairs during these episodes.
