The memory of societies has always been built over space and transferred to the next generation. These spaces sometimes appear as monuments, squares, or museums. In addition to their traditional roles in preserving history and historical artifacts, museums have taken on new roles, such as the recreation of social memory. The aim of this paper is to show how museums shape today's reality by representing the past. The paper consists of three parts. First, discussions on what social memory is and what kinds of functions it has in building space are presented. Second, the phenomenon of social memory taking root in space is explored. The roles of space in creating identity, making history, and inventing tradition are explained. Third, analysis of the role of museums as places of memory in the reproduction of social and cultural norms is undertaken.

The Museum as a social space and a place for lifelong learning

This article explores the social dimensions of the museum by focusing on two questions: 1) What elements in museums have proved successful in creating socially interactive environments? 2) Does social interaction stimulate learning in museums and if so: how? We argue that museums are fundamentally social spaces, which are often appreciated and used as spaces to be social, but also that there is a lack of research and knowledge on how museums act as social spaces in particular, and what kind of learning social interaction in museums stimulate. We are applying the tool Generic Learning Outcomes to approach these questions. By mapping and analysing 30 museum spaces and evaluating 25 activities in Norway, Sweden and Denmark, we have managed to identify a set of elements useful for making museum spaces more social. We have also been able to trace a connection between social interaction in museums and how the museum experience contributes to learning.
L’expérience muséale : discussion sur la relation entre les musées contemporains et leurs visiteurs Le but de cet article est d’étudier l’expérience muséale et les discussions autor du rôle des visiteurs dans les musées contemporains. Nous entendons cette expérience comme la relation que le visiteur établit avec les musées ainsi que l’aptitude de ces établissements à nourrir chaque visiteur individuel, en créant des expériences significatives, spéciales et uniques. Le point de vue actuel est que les publics ne sont plus de simples spectateurs passifs mais cherchent à avoir leur identité et/ou leurs besoins culturels reconnus par les musées. Devant cette situation, nous chercherons à discuter les limites et les défis provoques par les transformations que les musées ont subies dans les dernières décennies. Nous discuterons aussi comment ces changements ont influencé la relation avec les visiteurs dans leurs attentes et leurs programmations personnels. La discussion sera appuyée sur des références théoriques provenant du domaine de la communication et de l’éducation muséales. Notre objectif est de contribuer au débat concernant le concept contemporain des musées en relation avec le visiteur.
MUSEUMS IN THE LIFE OF THE PUBLIC
The present paper aims to emphasize how, in the latest years, more and more events and museum practices focus on the identification of new ways of engaging more individuals into the museum life, even exploring the possibility to extend and adapt the museum activities in the life of communities, according to the actual realities. In this regard we selected a number of relevant institutions in the field (museums, cultural forums etc.) and analyzed their innovative museum practices regarding the visitors and their engagement into the life of the museum. The results revealed that to attract more visitors and to increase public engagement, a museum must to be as a living entity who adapts its needs to the present cultural, economic, social, educational and technological context.
How to translate the concept of 'heritage': The social effect of museum exhibitions

The paper analyses how cultural institutions, such as museums, are able to influence and shape the understanding of theoretical concepts among their visitors. Museum institutions are using three-dimensional spaces with a broad range of theatrical means, filled with objects from their collections, in order to translate the theoretical concepts into socially active exhibitions. The basis of the paper is the field research conducted by the author in 2017 among the visitors of the exhibition "#heritage" in the National Museum in Krakow, Poland. The research showed how the exhibition has changed people's understanding of the concept of 'Polish national heritage' and what effect it had on their beliefs. Audience development in cultural organisations and museums in Lithuania is relevant and not enough explored. While reading different academic literature and research on this topic, the most common issue mentioned is a lack of research about visitors to Lithuanian cultural organisations and museums. Most usually, communication about events and products created for visitors is based on the intuition or opinion of the employees, rather than on analysis of visitor’s expectations. Meanwhile, global research is orientated to understand, who is the audience of the organisation and what expectations it has. Those studies show that the audience is expecting to get new emotions, learn new things, new experiences, and increase social connections, to feel welcomed and interested.

Anyone thinks to know what a museum is. However, despite the common thoughts, a museum is an institution which is constantly evolving nowadays. The present work aims to highlight the link between the "museum" entity as an institution and changes in society. This adjustment affects the museum communication. Today, communication is said to be a particular current topic due to social evolution. Indeed, it leads to new challenges arising from globalisation, and new opportunities offered in terms of technological innovation. We live in a historical moment characterised by great social and economic changes that see technology as the main protagonist. So what is the role of this technology in the institution and the "museum" institution? In this paper, we consider the results of the changes in society in terms of technology and how they affect museums and their manners of communication.
