In any supply chain, the warehouse is a main component in linking the chain partners and nowadays it acts as a competitive factor. Hence, it has become very necessary to manage warehouses effectively and allocate their resources efficiently. Warehouse Management Systems (WMSs) have been developed for monitoring, tracking and controlling the warehouse operations, but with the increasing dynamicity of the market, traditional systems have become less efficient and unsuitable for today's market requirements, that is why new technologies have started to emerge to be used for such applications. Internet of Things (IoT) is a promising technology that can be used in the context of Industry 4.0. In this paper, a smart WMS framework based on IoT is proposed; this system helps the warehouse manager to achieve more control and monitoring of the operations in real time. A review of WMS and IoT implementation in warehouses is presented. Also, the blocks and layers of IoT are illustrated. Finally, the benefits and challenges of implementing IoT in the supply chain and the warehouse are discussed.

Hence, it has become very necessary to allocate its resources efficiently and manage it effectively. A sound warehouse management system can contribute to cost reduction and improve customer satisfaction. However, traditional warehouse management system models have become unsuitable and inefficient for today's market requirements. So, companies have started to adopt innovative approaches and technologies to be used for such applications; one of these technologies is the Internet of Things that enables the connection between several physical objects and produces a massive amount of real-time data that can be transferred to useful information that helps in managing and decision making. In this paper, the architecture of this application is illustrated, its potential benefits are overviewed, and a framework for implementing this technology in a warehouse is proposed. This system can help in achieving more control and monitoring on all the operations in the warehouse in real time, increase speed and efficiency, and prevent counterfeiting and inventory shortage. The proposed framework can be taken as a roadmap for enterprises to improve warehouses by using the Internet of Things. Also, the benefits of implementing the proposed framework and its challenges are proposed.

2018
The objective of this study is to unearth the potential of Internet of Things when amalgamated to the Inventory Management in a Warehouse converting the warehouse into a SMART warehouse. Data Analysis: The inferences are drawn from reports such as Gartner reports; Forrester waves etc. and focused group discussions held with managers from organizations that have decent size warehouse operations. Techniques such as brainstorming, content analysis, Grounded theory etc. were deployed to derive solutions. Findings: The current state of technology, warehousing operations, inventory systems etc. were analyzed by the researchers. The technology roadmap was validated with its applicability to warehouse and inventory management systems that will transform the warehouse into a SMART warehouse. Solutions were derived that would support the real 1 International Journal of Pure and Applied Mathematics Volume 118 No. 24 2018 ISSN: 1314-3395 (on-line version) url: http://www.acadpubl.eu/hub/ Specia...
Design of IoT Architecture for order picking in a typical warehouse
2018
Internet of things is a new revolution in the capabilities of the endpoints that are connected to the internet, and is been driven by the advancements in capabilities of sensor networks, mobile devices, wireless communications, networking and cloud technologies. The demand for high-individualized products and services is continually increasing. Global presence and diverse product portfolio further adds to complexity. Visibility is a key challenge in warehouse management as there is need for accurate and timely information on shipments. Due to its increasing complexity, it is difficult to handle with ordinary planning and control practices. In order to overcome the competitive business environment one has to take actions with the implementation of IoT in warehouses. This research work proposes an IoT architecture for order picking process in a warehouse. The major outcome of this work is the design of an IoT architecture for order picking process in a warehouse. The other outcomes ar...
A Review of Enabling Technologies and Solutions for IoT Based Smart Warehouse Monitoring System
International Conference “New Technologies, Development and Applications”, 2020
Warehouses are premises used to store goods or products with the key task of ensuring its security as well as maintaining its value and quality. Some unexpected events in the warehouse such as temperature fluctuations and humidity changes, and other unwanted events may destroy the value of goods and products. In such circumstances, continuous monitoring of the warehouse and condition control should be carried out. Internet of Things (IoT) enables the development of various cost-effective solutions based on modern Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and infrastructure. IoT brings new opportunities and benefits for the development of Warehouse Management Systems (WMS). This paper put in light some possibilities of IoT applications for a smart warehouse monitoring system. We present a model of IoT system that helps to overcome some shortcomings in existing solutions for warehouse monitoring control.
Impacts of Internet of Things on Supply Chains: A Framework for Warehousing
Social sciences , 2019
The emergence of new digital industrial technology, known as Industry 4.0, has a positive impact on the performance of the supply chain. Warehouses are a basic part of the supply chain; they are used to store products and manage the inventory level. A sound warehouse management system can lead to cost reduction and also can improve customer satisfaction. Traditional warehouse management models have become less efficient and unsuitable for today's increasing market requirements. For the past decades, information and communication technology has been used for warehouse management. This paper presents a new approach for warehouse management by utilizing one of the main pillars of Industry 4.0, the Internet of Things. This new technology enables the connection of several objects through collecting real-time data and sharing them; the resulting information can then be used to support automated decision-making. The architecture of this application is illustrated and its potential benefits are overviewed. A framework is proposed to implement this approach in warehousing management, which can help in providing real-time visibility of everything in the warehouse, increasing speed and efficiency, and preventing inventory shortage and counterfeiting. This proposal gives an effective roadmap for enterprises to improve their warehouses by using the Internet of Things.

Warehouses are being impacted by increasing e-commerce and omni-channel commerce. The design of current WMSs (Warehouse Management Systems) may not be suitable to this mode of operation. The golden rule of material handling is smooth product flow, but there are day-to-day operational issues that occur in the warehouse that can impact this and order fulfilment, resulting in disruptions. Standard operational process is paramount to warehouse operational control but may preclude a dynamic response to real-time operational constraints. The growth of IoT (Internet of Things) sensor and data analytics technology provide new opportunities for designing warehouse management systems that detect and reorganise around real-time constraints to mitigate the impact of day-to-day warehouse operational issues. This paper presents the design and development stage of a design science methodology of an intelligent agent framework for basic warehouse management systems. This framework is distributed, i...
A ROADMAP TO MODERN WAREHOUSE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
International Research Journal of Modernization in Engineering Technology and Science, 2024
This article investigates the full pathway for deploying a modern Warehouse Management System (WMS) and its revolutionary effect on warehouse operations. Beginning with a thorough needs assessment and requirement analysis, the technique includes vendor selection, system integration, customisation, data migration, pilot testing, and complete training. The findings show considerable gains in inventory accuracy, order fulfillment timelines, and operational efficiency, all thanks to real-time data visibility and advanced analytics. A WMS's financial and operational benefits include increased customer satisfaction and significant cost reductions.
