THE EFFECT OF ENTREPRENEURIAL TRAINING ON TVET STUDENTS OF SUNYANI POLYTECHNIC

Abstract Skills and knowledge are essential ingredients for socio-economic growth for any country. Countries that have accumulated knowledge and skills are always in a better position to respond positively to challenges and opportunities of economic growth and curb unemployment. Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) is one of the avenues through which institutions sharpen the skills and knowledge of their products to engage in the world of work. In Ghana, there is an alarming rate of graduate unemployment. According to the developmental documents, small scale industry and the private sector is the engine of growth for the country’s economy since the government alone cannot employ all graduates. It is against this background that the TVET curricula of Polytechnic programmes in Ghana are structured to include entrepreneurial training, with the aim of equipping or building the capability of the students and to motivate their graduates and students to establish their own businesses, employ others and help reduce unemployment in Ghana. The paper examines the effect of entrepreneurial training on students pursuing TVET programmes in Sunyani Polytechnic. The authors conducted telephone interviews with former Sunyani Polytechnic students and administered questionnaires to final year students of the Polytechnic. There was also a review of tracer study records to determine whether our graduates were self-employed or not. One of the major findings was that despite the entrepreneurial training, majority of the graduates were in the public sector. Again, most of the students believed that what they received in entrepreneurial training does not encourage them to start their own businesses. The paper recommends among others that the teaching of entrepreneurship in the Polytechnic should be made more practical and the duration extended to cover all the semesters of study.
