Patent Analysis as a New Scholarly Research Method

As time progress, changes in human perception, thinking, and performance are inevitableand the same is true in research methods. There are many research methods accepted andadopted under qualitative and quantitative research umbrella and many new researchmethods are added by many researchers at different point of time. Such new systematicresearch methods provide or open a new avenue to succeeding researchers and provide anexpanded opportunity to see things differently. The process ofresearch always focuses oneither development of new knowledge or analysing and interpreting the existing things in anewer way. In this paper, we are proposing and forwarding a new qualitative researchmethod called ‘Patent Analysis’. This method focuses on analysis, description, andinterpretation of a chosen patent in any area in a systematic way. Such analysis process ofthe patent might lead to the development of new concepts or theory. The procedure of patentanalysis contains an evaluation of the patent in terms of its advantages, benefits, constraints,disadvantages, effectiveness, and future value. Further, the use and applications of patentanalysis in the organizational strategic decisions on foreseeing the new technologies are also discussed.
Patent information for strategic technology management
The information in patent data can be used for strategic planning purposes. A conceptual framework is developed showing the use of patent information in core areas of technology management. This paper addresses how patent information can be used for competitor monitoring, technology assessment, R&D portfolio management, the identification and assessment of potential sources for the external generation of technological knowledge, especially by means of mergers and acquisitions, and human resource management. Indicators of patenting strategies and various portfolio concepts which can be used for these purposes are described. Because of its strategic value, it is argued that the retrieval and evaluation of patent data should be institutionalized within the organization in order to ensure the continuous and systematic use of patent information in a companyÕs decision-making processes. How patent information becomes a core element of a firmÕs knowledge management system is outlined. This type of strategic patent information is geared toward two important recipients: (1) senior management who uses this information for decision-making purposes in important areas of technology management and (2) external stakeholders of the firm, such as shareholders and analysts, who have an increasing interest in assessing a firmÕs technological competence because of its strong impact on the firmÕs future competitiveness.

Indian industry in the 1990s has had to cope both with the liberalization of imports into the country and rapid technological developments and innovations occurring in both product and process technologies. To come up with competitive new products and processes, Indian industry needs to have access to detailed information on technological innovations that it has to compete with. One major method of obtaining such information could be an analysis of Indian patent data. Since such data might signal the kinds of product and processes foreign companies are planning to introduce in India, an analysis of Indian patent data could provide firms with information that could help them with their strategic planning efforts. An analysis of patents accepted by the Indian patent office in the fields Electric Communication Techniques over the last five years is carried with the intention of assessing whether data available in these patent applications would enable Indian firms to accurately assess technological advances and innovations occurring in this sector. It is also compared with data on patents granted by the US Patent Office. Public policy measures that could make Indian patent data more useful for Indian firms are also suggested.
Tools for Search, Analysis and Management of Patent Portfolios
Patents have been acknowledged worldwide as rich sources of information for technology forecasting, competitive analysis and management of patent portfolios. Because of the high potential of patents as an important indicator of various technology measurements and as econometric measure, patent analysis has become vital for corporate world and of interest to academic research. Retrieving relevant prior art, concerning the technology of interest, has been vital for managers and consultants dealing with intellectual property rights. Tremendous progress in the field of electronic search tools as of late has led to a specialised and less time consuming search capabilities even in the fields where search is mostly based on formulas, drawings and flowcharts. Online patent databases and various other analytical tools have given patent analysis an important edge, which otherwise required extensive and time consuming data collection and calculations. Patents provide valuable information which could be used for various purposes by industry, academia, and policy analysts. This article explores the various options and tools available for patent search, analysis and management of patent portfolios, for efficiently identifying the relevant prior art, managing their own patent clusters and/or competitive intelligence.
An approach to discovering new technology opportunities: Keyword-based patent map approach

This paper proposes an approach for creating and utilizing keyword-based patent maps for use in new technology creation activity. The proposed approach comprises the following sub-modules. First, text mining is used to transform patent documents into structured data to identify keyword vectors. Second, principal component analysis is employed to reduce the numbers of keyword vectors to make suitable for use on a two-dimensional map. Third, patent 'vacancies', defined as blank areas in the map that are sparse in patent density but large in size, are identified. The validity of the vacancy is then tested against such criteria as technological criticality and technological trends. If a vacancy is judged as meaningful, its technological features are investigated in detail to identify the potential for new technology creation. The procedure of the proposed approach is described in detail by employing an illustrative patent database and is implemented into an expert system for new technology creation.

This special section focuses on research related to patent analytics. The objective of this section is to present research contributions from four papers that describe contextual applications of patent analytics. Earlier researched and written about as patent analysis, a the term patent analytics has emerged as a discipline extending from the popular term business analytics. The di®erence being that patent analytics uses patent data. b Patent analytics is quickly engul¯ng every type of research hypotheses related to patent data, large or small. In recent years, there is a spate of research especially from Asian and emerging economies. Conceptually, it is the application of quantitative and qualitative analytics to data mined from patent databases. Patent analytics preferably considers homogeneous patent data. Homogeneity in data can mean panel or cross-sectional data from one organization, such as a¯rm or university, data from a technology area, for example Biotechnology, data from a subset of patent classes, or even data of patents with high sale value. This emerging discipline draws from applied areas of Technology Management using techniques like descriptive and multivariate analysis, survival analysis, social network theory and content analysis of case studies, to elicit meaningful interpretations out of patent data, useful in managerial decision-making. The applications of statistical techniques and qualitative analysis is evident in the set of four papers here in this section. When patent data is analyzed it provides insights about organizational R&D strategy, existing technology landscapes, markets and market reactions, technology°ows, technology growth and even indications on patent price. To a large extent patent analytics is pre-work to eventual multi-applications of landscape output that is meaningful to decision-makers.
Text Mining Analysis of Patent in Innovation Studies: Trends, Issues and Future Research Agenda
Innovation is a cornerstone of progress, and patents play a pivotal role in protecting and promoting novel ideas and technologies. This paper delves into the dynamic intersection of text mining and innovation studies by focusing on patent data. This literature review paper presents an in-depth assessment of the trends and developments in text mining techniques as they relate to patent analysis within the context of innovation studies. This paper presents a thorough study of text mining literature through a systematic literature review of 162 articles in 20 peer-reviewed journals published from 2003 to 2022. We undertake a thorough literature review in this study, identifies themes and categorize the papers into five clusters of Technology opportunities identification, Firm competition strategies, Emerging technology forecasting and evaluation, Patent technical intelligence, Technological convergence and open-endedness. The study shows that most articles concentrated on technological firms and focused on technological-driven strategies. This paper highlights key results, open issues and outlines a compelling research agenda for further investigation and development in the field of text mining in innovation studies related to patents
