The aims of this study were to evaluate the traits of reproductive, milking and growth performance of Saanen and Saanen × Hair crossbreds (F1, B1 and B2) raised at the Bandırma Sheep Research Institute. The data were collected from 868 goats for reproductive performance and milk yield and from 1077 kids for survival performance between 2009-2012. Milk components (fat, protein, lactose and non-fat dry matter) of goats (n=162) and body weight changes of kid’s (n=64) were evaluated for one year in 2012. Estrus rates and survival rates were similar among all genotypes. Kidding rate was significantly higher in F1 goats than Saanen goats. Saanen goat had the lowest average mean daily milk yield compared with other genotypes. The effect of year and age were significant on milk yield. Goats in F1 and B1 genotypes had higher milk protein percentage and non-fat dry matter content in comparison with Saanen and B2 genotype. Milk fat and lactose contents were similar among genotypes. Birth weigh...
This study was carried out to determine the effect of non-genetic factors on growth and reproductive traits in Saanen goats. For this aim, total of 274 Saanen goats and kids were investigated for growth and reproductive traits in South Marmara Region of Turkey. Fertility parameters were evaluated during two reproductive years. Saanen kids were measured from birth to 6 months of life. The average live weights at birth, weaning, 60 th , 90 th , 120 th and 180 th days of age were calculated and determined as 3.05±0.04kg, 11.80±0.27kg, 12.26±0.08kg, 14.20±0.32kg, 17.41±0.45kg, 25.01±0.65kg, respectively. The effects of sex and birth type on live weights until 90 th days of age; maternal age only on birth weight; month at birth on all of investigated days were found significant statistically. The pregnancy, birth rate per pregnancy (BR P), birth rate per mating (BR M), infertility, abortion, kidding rate (single, twin or triplet), survival rate (until weaning), number of kids per parturition (NKP), number of kids per mating (NKM) were found; 92.98%,
Evaluation of Milk Yield and Milk Composition of Honamlı Goats
Journal of the Hellenic Veterinary Medical Society, 2021
The aim of this study was to determine the milk yield and milk composition (total solids, fat, protein and lactose), freezing point depressionand somatic cell counts of Honamlı goat during second lactationin Turkey. The animal material of the study consisted of a total of 30 goat. Total milk yield was detected by using Fleischmann’s method. Milk composition was analyzed by Bentley 150, and somatic cells were counted by Bentley Somacount FC. One-way ANOVA was used to determine the effect of lactation stages on milk yield and milk composition. In the study, mean lactation period and lactation milk yield of Honamlı goat were detected as 202.4 days, and 92.6 kg, respectively. The percentages of fat, protein, lactose, total solid, freezing point depression, and somatic cell counts /mL of milk were 2.4%, 4.2%, 5.1%, 12.7%, -0.57 °C, 82.8 and 2.9%, 4.2%, 4.7%, 12.7%, -0.59 °C, 483 on the 60th and 120thlactation day respectively. Total solids, fat, and protein values significantly increased...
Growth and Slaughter Characteristics of Weaning Male Kids of Turkish Native Goat Breeds
Animals, 2021
There is little knowledge about the carcass potential of Turkish native goat breeds raised under different rearing conditions. It is necessary to compare the carcass characteristics of these breeds to minimize the effect of the rearing conditions. Therefore, this study aims to compare the growth, slaughter, and carcass characteristics of male kids at weaning age to eliminate the impact of rearing conditions. Kids born to Angora (n = 6), Hair (n = 6), Honamlı (n = 6), and Kilis (n = 6) Turkish native goat breeds, ranging in age from 2–3 years, were slaughtered at 90 days of weaning age and carcass characteristics were determined immediately. There were differences (p < 0.05) among breeds in terms of birth weight (BW) and daily weight gain (DWG) from birth to weaning age. Honamlı kids had higher BW and DWG than those of other breeds (p < 0.05). Similarly, carcass weights (hot–cold) and yields (hot–cold) of Honamlı kids were higher compared to kids born to other breeds (p < 0....
Correlations among Certain Growth and Production Traits in Different Breeds of Goats
Iranian Journal of Applied Animal Science, 2017
The study was conducted to estimate the genetic and phenotypic correlations among body measurements, body weight, kidding interval, kidding rate and milk yield in the different breeds of goat. Data was collected on 95 goats of three breeds (Jamunapari, Black Bengal and their crosses (Jamunapari×Black Bengal) through direct observation. The average body weight of Jamunapari goat was 34.75 ± 3.33 kg higher than Black Bengal (27.54 ± 5.332 kg) goats. It was observed that Jamunapari goat (0.65 ± 0.187 L/day) produces higher daily milk during lactation length than Black Bengal (0.50±0.094 L/day), leading to higher lactation milk production of this goat. The kidding rate and kidding interval were 1.
Growth, survival rate, and some reproductive characteristics of Hair goat under breeder conditions in Kahramanmaraş Province, 2021
This study was carried out to determine the growth characteristics and survival rate until weaning, some reproductive characteristics of Hair goat, and the factors affecting these characteristics under farmer conditions in Kahramanmaraş province. In the study, a total of 19386 birth weight (BW) records of kids in 49 different flocks in 14 villages for 5 years (2014-2018), and a total of 18017 weaning weight (WW) records were used from the National Genetic Improvement Project of Sheep and Goat in Turkey (NGIPSG). The average BW, WW, and daily live weight gain (DWG) of the kids were determined as 3.17 ± 0.013, 15.81 ± 0.045 kg and 139.78 ± 0.502 g, respectively. Among the environmental factors examined on these characteristics, the effect of dam's age, year and season of birth, type of birth, and sex were found to be statistically significant (p < 0.01). While the average survival rate of the kids at weaning was 92.94% and ranged between 90.99% and 95.14% depending on the years the effects of dam's age (p < 0.01), year of birth (p < 0.01), season of birth (p < 0.05), sex (p < 0.01) and type of birth (p < 0.01) on survival rate were found to be significant. In the study, litter size and twin birth rate were found to be 1.10 and 9.9%, respectively. These results showed that the Hair goat was adapted to the region, and its breeding was carried out in a sustainable manner in the region.
