Abstract
The thesis aspires to contribute to the wider anthropological perspective and understanding of the complex Cypriot Problem. Focusing on the Cypriot division, and on the boundaries that it creates, the thesis examines the ways in which social subjects attempt to cope with the official restrictions. These can be social, political or geographical, but they are also expressed as restrictions to the development of the imagination for a different future.The field of study is the Walled City of Nicosia, an area in which the division appears as bold as nowhere else on the island. In this field, the thesis presents an ethnographic account of the appearance and development of the political and cultural activity that emerges from below, but flourishes in between the liminality and the marginality of the Walled City of Nicosia.
