At the Crossroads of Senses and Significations: the Baudelarian ‘morale des choses’ Correspondences is possibly the aspect of Baudelaire’s œuvre that has been receiving most academic attention. It seems, however, that the studies conducted so far have neglected its key aspect. Taking Baudelaire’s article on Victor Hugo (1861) as the point of departure, it could be argued that the theory of correspondences opens itself to a hermeneutic strategy going beyond the traditionally applied vertical-horizontal model. This strategy involves both the characteristically Romantic preoccupation with the experiences of the self and the Baudelarian conception of modernity. It is therefore at the intersection of senses and significations that the ‘morale des choses’ fully reveals itself.
