Maxillary Impacted Canines: A Clinical Review (original) (raw)
2013, Orthodontic Journal of Nepal
Impacted teeth are those with a delayed eruption time or that are not expected to erupt completely based on clinical and radiographic assessment. Palatal displacement of the maxillary canines is defined as the developmental dislocation to a palatal site often resulting in tooth impaction requiring surgical and orthodontic treatments. Impacted permanent maxillary canine occur in 1-2% of the population. The Occurrence of impacted permanent maxillary canines are; 85% palatal and 15% labial. The prevalence of palatally displaced canines (PDC) fluctuates between 0.8-5.2%. Palatally erupting or impacted maxillary canines occur twice often in females than males, and are five times more common in Caucasians than Asians. Of all patients with maxillary impacted canines, 8% have bilateral impactions.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3126/ojn.v3i1.9285 Orthodontic Journal of Nepal, Vol.3, No.1, 2013: 63-68

Canine impactionion is most comanly encountered problem in the eruption sequence of permanent teeth. Etiology varies from in each patient. Three quarters of its final root length. the mandibular central incisors and first molars have marginally less root development and mandibular canines and second molars marginally more when they erupt. this therefore can be taken as a diagnostic baseline from which to assess the eruption of teeth in general.incidence of maxxilary canine is more compared to mandibular canine
MAXILLARY IMPACTED CANINES A CLINICAL CONCEPT
Impacted canines is a common finding among patients, who demand orthodontic treatment. Diagnosis of impacted canine is achieved by clinical and radiographic examination. Treatment planning is based upon diagnostic findings and criteria that must be in consideration in order to assure minimal injury and periodontal health. So long as orthodontic treatment is decided on, the attraction of impacted canine is made by elastic chain applied directly to brackets of the adjacent to impacted canine teeth, to orthodontic wire, to orthodontic screw, to lingual or palatal bar vs transpalatal bar with extention. The last three are used like anchorage system of dental arch. The aim of this study is to review the etiology of canine impaction and to emphasize the importance of imaging and data processing in diagnosis. To criticize different surgical methods and treatment options with the opportunity of dealing with ? cases presented in this paper. All cases were treated by interdisciplinary cooperation between an orthodontist and oral
Maxillary canine impactions: orthodontic and surgical management
2002
With the exception of the maxillary and mandibular third molars, the maxillary canine is the most commonly encountered impaction. In North America, palatally located impactions appear to predominate over labially impacted canines and occur more frequently in women. Because of the common nature of this phenomenon, the general dentist should know how to properly diagnose and manage potential disturbances in the eruption of the maxillary canine. If diagnosed early, and when clinically and radiographically indicated, extraction of the deciduous canine may help correct the eruption path of the permanent tooth and prevent impaction. This article reviews the etiology, prevention, and surgical and orthodontic management of impacted cuspids. Because the general dentist is often the first dental care provider to come in contact with patients with impacted canines, knowledge about this common dental anomaly is essential to provide proper comprehensive therapy.

The impacted maxillary canines are the second most common of the impacted tooth. Ectopic eruption may lead to impaction. An ectopic maxillary canine is a canine which follows an abnormal path of eruption in the maxilla. The aim of the study is to quantify the prevalence of impacted maxillary canines and its association with other dental anomalies. A retrospective study was done with 13 patients who had impacted maxillary canines. For the data collection we reviewed patient records and analysed the data of 86000 patients between june 2019 and march 2020.
Maxillary Canine Impactions in Orthodontic Patients: A Study
Orthodontic Journal of Nepal, 2016
Introduction: Dental anomalies involving alterations in number, size and structure of teeth often present a major challenge for dental practitioners. Many of these undiagnosed and untreated dental anomalies may ultimately present complex clinical problems in the areas of orthodontics, prosthodontics, endodontics and restorative dentistry. Maxillary canines are important aesthetically and functionally, but impacted ones are more difficult and time consuming to treat. Permanent maxillary canine impaction has been reported in 1-5% of the population. Objective: To determine the prevalence of impacted maxillary canine in patients visiting to Dhulikhel Hospital, Kathmandu University School of Medical Sciences, Nepal.Materials & Method: The study was conducted with a total number of 341 orthodontic patients. The study consisted of clinical and radiographic examinations of the patients who visited Department for Orthodontics for orthodontic treatment. Descriptive statistics was calculated fo...
