More than 60% of all English words have Greek or Latin roots. This course looks at the historical development of English with the focus on the elements borrowed from the classical languages including the vocabulary of medicine, law, science, politics, and the humanities. No knowledge of Greek or Latin is necessary. Through this course you will expand your knowledge of English vocabulary and understand the ways in which words and their history shape our perception of the world. Your success in this class will in a large part be based on your involvement. You are encouraged to ask questions in class and to contribute your own knowledge (including any interesting words you may come across). Basically, if you like words and their history, you will likely succeed and have fun in this class.
